BREAKING: Cameron Diaz is in final negotiations to join the spectacular cast of The Counselor, the Ridley Scott-directed drama based on the original script by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. She will join Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. It is a strong supporting role she’ll play, named Malkina. Fassbender plays the title role of a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting sucked down, which proves to be a life-threatening decision.
It continues the charmed track the film has been on since McCarthy surprised his ICM agents by delivering his first spec script late last year, with Nick Wechsler and Chockstone’s Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz (who produced the screen adaptation of McCarthy’s The Road) buying it preemptively. It has been a magnet for talent, particularly after Scott cleared the decks to direct it next, and set his Prometheus star Fassbender to star. The director’s Scott Free came aboard to produce with Wechsler and the Chockstone duo. That gave Fox first crack at the film, and the studio recently closed a deal to release the picture. Next came commitments from both Pitt and Bardem (who won his Best Actor Oscar for the Coen brothers-directed adaptation of McCarthy’s No Country For Old Men), and subsequently Cruz.
The project has been described to me as No Country For Old Men on steroids.
Diaz most recently starred in Bad Teacher, and stars in the upcoming Lionsgate comedy What To Expect When You’re Expecting. She’s repped by CAA and managed by Rick Yorn.

I don’t know how I feel about Diaz as Malkina, she’s described as a dark Latina who is very wicked.
And where does Penelope Cruz come in? what role is she up for? Too many A-listers in the mix here. But I’m still interested in it for Michael Fassbender.
So Diaz isn’t “dark”, not like there are no blondes in Argentina, where the character is from. Diaz is 1/2 Latina and I’m excited to see her play a character so different from anything she’s done before. Closest is probably her character in VANILLA SKY.
Agreed. Penelope Cruz seems like a better fit for Malkina. I think she’s playing The Counselor’s girlfriend, which is a fairly minor role.
No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had high hopes for this movie.
Are we sure she’s playing Malkina? Because Penelope seems way more suited to that role, while Diaz fits better for the character of Fassbender’s fiancee.
Maybe, this is a part in which Cameron Diaz can actually do some god acting. The cast is terrific, and I have faith in Ridley.
Cameron hasn’t done much of anything worth remembering for quite some time. BTW – Don’t think Cameron Diaz is commanding the big bucks she once enjoyed. She is rather boring in her roles and projects, and with all due respect, she is no longer the hot ‘young’ star. So, let’s hope this film reboots her career for the future as a viable actor.
Diaz proved she’s still a “viable actor” with the $216,000,000 global success of BAD TEACHER last summer. It wasn’t a critical darling like BAD SANTA or SCHOOL OF ROCK, but I laughed quite a bit.
I’m definitely a fan of Cormac McCarthy’s but with that said, this script is not his best work. I actually found it difficult reading. I don’t understand what got Ridley so excited. But he’s a modern master and I trust him enough that he should be able to do what he wants with whatever cast he wants. But this one is a head-scratcher. “No Country For Old Men” is a masterpiece of a novel and pitch-perfect screenwriting. “The Counselor” isn’t anywhere close.
Yeah I’m trying to picture Cameron Diaz in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN…
Huh. I think I pictured it. It’s terrible.
Good for her. Get that Oscar, Cameron.
Hey Simone– Angelina Jolie, who was also in talks for the role, isn’t a dark latina either. Sounds like Ridley may be going a different way with it.
If people really think Cameron Diaz is that bad, would you rather Olivia Wilde (seemingly box office poison and no discernible personality)?
I enjoy Cameron’s work– Bad Teacher especially. Lokking forward to seeing her in a dramatic role. So excite for this flick!
Gah– Sorry for the typos in the last two sentences.
This script is crazy. Very dark tone. It’ll be interesting to see if people come out for this movie cause it’s certainly not going to be easy to sell.
I am really disappointed in this casting choice. I read THE COUNSELOR, and it’s a great script. Malkina is the role that stands out the most.
Diaz just isn’t up to the task. No offense to any of her fans, but she just doesn’t have the acting chops to pull this role off. Alluring yet sociopathic. Beautiful but bloodthirsty. I definitely don’t picture Cameron Diaz.
Also, Malkina is supposed to be incredibly hot and seductive. I’m sorry, but Diz hasn’t fit that description since THE MASK.
I agree with this post almost entirely. The wording I disagree with is “just isn’t up to the task.” I hope she is, but I too have many doubts and am concerned it could flop an otherwise anticipated film.
I am done being Angelina’s fan. She strings along her fans in hopes that she will buy a clue and choose good movie roles. If all she cares about is getting a big paycheck then own up to it and stop giving false hope to your fans.
Good luck to Cameron. Atleat she tries to do interesting work once in a while.
I love Cameron but more as a personality or a “red carpet girl” than an actress. I’m sure Ridley knows what he’s doing but dang, the girl is minimally talented IMO. Kind of in line with Halle Barry or Olivia Wilde – pretty, nice, likeable, but no Nicole Kidman (I won’t even compare them to the Meryl, that would be unkind).
I’m sure with all the great talent around her she’ll be as good as she can possibly be, as in Gangs of NY. The problem is yeah, she was as good as she could be… but she still wasn’t all that good.
Sorry, but this is the problem with “Hollywood”. The go for style over substance. I do not dislike Ms. Diaz, but I think there are much better actresses for the role. She simply does not have a depth range in my opinion. Certain roles are for certain people. Her negative comments about fans that were happy to see her some years ago let me know that she had succumbed to the “Hollywood Monster”.
I think that Michelle Rodriguez could easily play Malkina based on her latest roles. She is young and hot-blooded. Ridley should spice up the cast with new talents besides Michael. He is old and confused…
