2ND UPDATE 4PM: ABC has issued the following statement in response of CBS’ filing: “We believe there is no merit to this lawsuit. The differences between Glass House and Big Brother are both fundamental and obvious, ranging from Glass House’s interactive elements and audience participation to its deployment of cutting edge technologies.
UPDATE, 3:05 PM: CBS claims in the lawsuit (read it here) that The Glass House employs “at least 19″ former producers and staff from Big Brother, and details them all by name in today’s filing. CBS is suing for copyright infringement, trade-secret misappropriation, unfair competition, breach of contract and conspiracy among other claims, calling Glass House “a carbon copy” of its Big Brother. As for dollar amounts, the network is asking for $500,000 “for each of the Individual Defendants’ acts in violation of the non-disclosure agreements” — with multiple clauses, those totals add up fast — in addition to other damages and legal fees. “CBS therefore brings this action to obtain preliminary and permanent injunctive relief and restitution, and to recover compensatory and punitive damages.”
PREVIOUS, 1:45 PM: A week after CBS fired a warning shot with a letter to ABC threatening to take legal action if the network proceeds with its recently announced summer reality series The Glass House, the eye network today filed a lawsuit against the Disney-owned broadcast networks. I haven’t seen the filing yet, but last week’s letter noted that Glass House “exposes ABC to liability, including damages and injunctive relief, for violation of the Copyright Act, including breach of non-disclosure agreements and misappropriation of trade secrets.” CBS is basing its case on the fact that the concept of Glass House is very similar to its veteran Big Brother. The network also claims that the ABC series employs at least 18 former members of CBS’ Big Brother production staff, many of whom have signed confidentiality agreements with CBS, which the network argues would be breached in their work for Glass House.

Surprise NBC hasn’t done the same to Fox for that horrible Choice show
Time for ABC to finally sue CBS over The Talk.
ABC is guilty as hell they are idiots for even attempting to do this. They will have to pay millions to CBS just to avoid going to trial.
Obviously you are either CBS’ lawyer or a bonehead….little difference that I see.
For Real! So Obvious!
A good day for Beverly Hills lawyers.
the premises are shockingly similar and have several big brother workers on the show — you would think they would come up with an original idea — CBS should sue.
Let’s see. Starting with The Real World, a group living in a house and their life taped.
Love Cruise had a group living on a ship and their life taped. The Surreal Life had a group living in a house and their life taped. Road Rules had a group living in an RV and their life taped.
Big Brother had—there’s a pattern here—.
What’s next? a group lives on an island and has their life taped, oh yeah, Survivor.
Sure, there’s something a bit different on each but that’s reality television.
The basic format is used by dozens of producers. Will be interesting to see where this lawsuit ends up.
I guess you don’t remember CBS suing FOX over Boot Camp copying Survivor? FOX settled out of court quickly.
USA should sue CBS over the mentalist then. Then CBS can sue abc for stealing 2 broke girls and calling it apt 23. Then Gary Marshall can sue them both for stealing laverne and Shirley. Hollywood hypocracy knows no limits
If ABC is smart, they don’t air this show whatsoever and then CBS can drop the lawsuit. We don’t need any more legal whorehouse shows airing on TV.
Maybe CBS should consider its treatment of employees at Big Brother before suing ABC. If the show payed equitably and didn’t force employees to work hours that are not only illegal, but inhumane, perhaps there wouldn’t be so many Big Brother alumni at Glass House.
The ghost of George Orwell would like to chime in here…
CBS: Glass House is Big Brother.
ABC: Nuh huh! Ours is a show about people living in a house.
CBS: That’s Big Brother…and The Real World.
ABC: But ours records everything these people do!
CBS: That’s still Big Brother…and The Real World.
ABC: Okay, but ours is a competition!
CBS: Yep, that’s Big Brother. Really, you even have people from Big Brother working on your show. A show exactly like Big Brother.
ABC: Well yeah but that doesn’t mean anything. The show is called GLASS HOUSE not Big Brother.
CBS: Yeah, that’s the only difference.
ABC: Ah ha! See, they are different.
CBS: Wow, you’re stupid. Good luck throwing cash at a show that will never see the light of day.
Its a reality show. Every time you cast a show with different people you have a different show because it’s their own reality. Also Glass House has a lot more technical house advancements than BB does. Like comparing the playboy mansion to the bunny ranch just because they both reference rabbits.
I hope they take the talk show off.i do not like it.
