The renewal of CBS‘ long-running sitcom Rules Of Engagement is going down to the wire. Less that 24 hours before CBS’ upfront presentation tomorrow, the network and Rules producer Sony Pictures TV continue to be deep in negotiations on a pickup. The two sides are still going back-and-forth on a number of issues, including the size of a potential seventh-season order, but there appears to be a will on both parts to make it happen. The show needs 13 episodes to get to the 100-episode mark. CBS only ordered two new comedy series for next season, so, as this season proved, having a reliable performer like Rules on the bench could come in handy.
Because CBS picked up only two new comedies, Partners and Friend Me, speculation is that the network won’t expand the Thursday comedy block to two hours, keeping the rising Person Of Interest at 9 PM. The consensus is that the Thursday 10 PM series, The Mentalist, will move out to make room for a new series: the Sherlock Holmes reboot Elementary or period drama Vegas, jokingly referred to “Pre-CSI” as it is set in Sin City decades before CBS’ signature forensic drama. New legal drama Baby Big Shot appears Friday-bound. As for The Mentalist‘s destination, Sunday appears logical with CSI: Miami going away. On the comedy side, Partners seems bound for fall. A big question is whether CBS would keep 2 Broke Girls on Monday or move it Thursday to strengthen its grip on TV’s most coveted night.

2 Broke Girls must move to Thursday because with britney spears in x factor will be bloodbath! And if they stay Person Of Interest there the show will need strong lead-in against Greys and Glee.
Thursday at 10 is mush easy slot now. But the good news is that if Person Of Interest stay at 9 will take 100% CBS post-Super Bowl slot! 2 BG will air after TBBT wich is good news too the best possible lead-in for comedy!
BTW Person Of Interest is not only most populat rookie show with his 14+ milliom viewrs! Only other dramas with rookie seasons with 14+ millions viwers in last 10 years are:
CSI, CSI NY, CSI Miami, NCIS LA!!! And guess what all of them are CBS hits with 5+seasons! Person Of Interest problem was weak lead-in all season long. The show can’t gain demo. gain 5-6 millions viewers but no demo! With 2 Broke Girls lead-in will be next CBS beast drama! Upgrade NCIS!
IF the Mentalist is moving to Sunday, I won’t stop watching it, I love the show too much for that, BUT whatever they put in its place I HOPE it will crash and burn, fast and furious. >:O
This mad I will be if the move takes place.
Nielsen People: I’m counting on you. >:|
@Tommy
CBS need strong lead-in for Person Of Interest(after second best drama Grey now and Glee is there an yea office stil best NBC sitcom) and best option VS Britney-x factor. And 2 BG with TBBT lead-in will be beast! Person Of Interest with 2BG lead-in and after Super Bowl can turn best drama on the network.
One of the oddest comments I’ve seen!
What’s so odd about it?
Just can’t get enough of ‘The Mentalist’ and of course, Simon Baker. He is Perfect in that role. The rest of the cast are superb in their respective roles, but since I watched the first episode I was totally ‘hooked’. Please don’t cancel it… so, now it’s Thursday to Sunday. Also, does anyone know if Tom Selleck is going to do any more of the Jesse Stone movies??? They’re also super!
Moving “2 Broke Girls” to thursday is the worst idea I’ve ever heard. Send “2 1/2 Men” to thursday…
@Tommy
Well Person Of Interest need strong lead-in vs second best drama Grey, now FOX Glee and best nbc sitcom office. Also CBS need 2 BG vs Britney and x factor! And with TBBT lead-in, 2BG wil be beast. PoI will be good after 2BG and after Super Bowl(if writers make greate story) can turn out best network drama and next CBS beast.
I agree. 2 1/2 men will strengthen the lineup better than 2 broke girls. They are well established with their own fanbase. They can use monday to make another hit comedy by taking 2 1/2 men’s old spot or moving mike and molly there and having a new comedy after that.
CBS needs to keep Rules. It’s a great show.
CBS owns half of Rules so getting the show to 100 episodes should be a no-brainer. Plus I thought the episode where Leslie lost her son at the school fundraising concert was hilarious.
Like HG, I will watch The Mentalist wherever it ends up. And like HG, I will refuse to watch whatever replaces it on Thursdays.
Why? It’s not as if Mentalist started out on Thursday nights. Why does the night matter. If you like the show you’ll follow it.
What can I say? It’s an emotional reaction. And I only got into it in season 2, when it was already on Thursdays.
I think “Rules of Engagement” is a terrible show (though I’ve loved Megyn Price since her last series), so I wouldn’t miss it if it were gone. But it does well for CBS, so I don’t understand why they treat it so badly. I still won’t watch it, but a lot of other people will.
I ran into one of the main actors on the show. They told me basically that Les Moonves personally doesn’t like the show.
X Factor is going to be no threat to Big Bang or any CBS Thursday show because X Factor is terrible and the arrival of Queen Auto Tune is just going to make the show worse. Her arrival along with Demi “who the heck is she” Lovato is meeting with groans and laughter. CBS has no worries as long as the 8:30 slot isn’t given to another How to Be a Gentleman.
I hope the Sunday rumor is true. First they were saying Friday at 9:00 and that is Fringe and Supernatural night. Sunday, I can do.
Its shocking how bad CBS has treated this show and it’s honestly it’s funniest comedy
Rules reminds me of Wings. A show that gets moved all over the schedule that not one single person I know ever watches.
Who is Leslie???
Please pick up Rules of Engagement! I love that show. So much funnier than 90% of the other sitcoms on tv right now.
Rules of Engagement is one of the funniest shows on TV.Way better than Two Broke Girls. I don’t understand how they could possibly think of cancelling this show!
BBT & 2 broke Girls would be a nice hour of comedy for CBS on Thursdays and can even build upon the already-growing audience for both programs as it is. They risked it with BBT a year ago, so might as well for Broke Girls too. Rules should be moved to Mondays and not utilized as a mid-season replacement.
I can’t believe how many commenters watch live TV. We watch 2 Broke Girls on Friday because that’s the night it best fits our mood along with other CBS comedies (HIMYM and Big Bang). TiVo/DVR people. Watch when you want. Even On Demand/the web or an app.. Does that mean you watch commercials too?
Many shows are still unavailable on Hulu and VOD (for example, Warner Bros. is a very greedy network and took “2 Broke Girls” off Hulu and never had it on VOD and “Suburgatory” initially wasn’t available on either) and not everyone has DVR
I don’t necessarily think everybody’s watching live TV, but that is where the ratings count, so having a cohesive schedule goes a long way to a show’s success/failure. The fact is the majority of the country *does* still watch live TV – NCIS gets 17-20 million viewers each week, Idol gets about 15, etc… – so it is all judged on this.
I was thinking the same thing. The only things we watch “live” is the occasional sporting event.
What about Hawaii 5-O is Massi Oka coming back? Better than Daniel Dae Kim. Such a stiff. Love Scott Caan.
He is good on the show. It was a smart move getting him.
Does anyone care about the show?
I wonder why they are moving Mentalist to Sundays. Didn’t they try it on a Friday this season and it got good ratings while also boosting the ratings of Blue Bloods. Not that I’m happy for Mentalist moving to Fridays. Since Mentalist, CBS has not succeeded in launching a successful show at 10pm on Tuesday. They should move Mentalist to it’s original spot. Or move Hawaii Five-0 to 10pm on Tuesday. I think they might be planning to launch new dramas at 10pm on Monday and Thursday.
Moving “2 Broke Girls” makes sense as it is already a proven performer, and CBS has struggled to fill the post-TBBT slot on Thursday since it started airing on Thursdays. Ditto with The Mentalist moving to Sundays – Person Of Interest is one of their top-rated shows, and there is barely any competition at 10pm for a new series to launch (NBC has all-but given up by plugging in Rock Center, and Scandal hasn’t been the breakout hit ABC needed). All good moves from CBS, how I bet the other execs are spitting over their strength!
i m disappointed for the mentalist..
Oh my God!!! I hope they are wrong.Bad news for The Mentalist.
Perhaps that you have to read it aloud in order to (kind of) understand it. I’ve seen more coherence in a homeless person’s rants.
Rules of engagement is funnier than most other shows. 2 broke girls is nothing but one-liners and a laugh track to tell idiots when to laugh. I stopped watching 2 and a half men a long time ago. It is totally unwatchable. If they cancel rules, it will just confirm the idea the people in control have no clue what is entertaining.
Rules is very intelligent and enjoyable. Please keep it. 2BG is just too forced. One bawdy comment immediately follwed by onother trying to top it. Too much.
Please keep Rules of Engagement.. It is a great show and with the other shows on CBS Monday and Thursday, it makes you want to watch.
