It’s no April Fool’s joke — last month CNN delivered its lowest-rated month in total day in over a decade, since August 2001, the month before the September 11 attacks. The once-dominant cable news network posted decade-lows among both total viewers (357,000) and Adults 25-54 (108,000). Versus April last year, CNN was down 21% in total viewers and 29% in 25-54. In comparison, leader Fox News CHannel was up 2% in total viewers (1.1 million) and 1% in 25-54 (273,000) and No.2 MSNBC was flat in total viewers (425,000) and down 5% in 25-54 (139,000).

Things did not look brighter for CNN in the evening where its shows too posted across-the-board declines: John King USA at 6 PM was down 41% in the 25-54 demo, Erin Burnett Outfront at 7 PM was down 34%, Piers Morgan was down 14% at 9PM, and Anderson Cooper 360 was down 8% at 8 PM and 28% at 10PM. In primetime, CNN had its lowest rated month in nearly two years, since August 2010, in both total viewers (508,000, down 16% from last year) and adults 25-54 (149,000, down 22%). Meanwhile FNC (1.9 million, 395,000 in 25-54) was flat in total viewers from last April and down 9% in 25-54. MSNBC (754,000; 236,000) was down 5% and 9%, respectively.

CNN has made the same mistake that Time and Newsweek have made. CNN is no longer just a news organization, it is political. Most of the talking heads lean far left, the interviews they have reveal the same slant, even comments on basic news are slanted. When you alienate 50% or more of your possible viewers your numbers go down. Duh!!
As someone who leans to the left, I see CNN having talking heads to the right. What I find with CNN is that they have stopped reporting. They typically interview their own reporters; and when they interview someone leaning either right or left and they make an outlandish statement, they do not follow-up questioning the veracity of the statement. That is just bad news.

I’m fairly neutral politically and although I agree Fox leans right, they seem to be fair about letting you know up front that’s who they are. MSNBC is hard to watch because they just don’t seem very mature – Chris Mathews getting a tingle from Obama and Olbermann’s tantrums, and so on. CNN, I think, is the one that is most deceptive about their ideology. They slant leftward, but pretend to be neutral. At least Fox and MSNBC don’t play that game.

The reason that the ratings are so high for Fox News is because of the lack of bias in their news reporting. They have balance with Beckel and Williams and even Hannity and the like invite left-leaning analysts to comment although many are too feeble to actually accept. All the indpendent research shows that Fox is balanced in its reporting, which is more than can be saof of CBS, NBC or CNN.

CNN need to freshen itself up and become more center-right, because if they’re smart they’ll read the writing on the wall and instead of resisting it they’ll go in with eyes open and try to shape it. They have a chance to pull some viewers from FOX if they do, but they have to can Amanpour, put Wolf Blitzer on permanent vacation, and get the RED out of their logos and headlines and the cants to their stories. They can shift by 10-15 degrees and get back a lot of the center if they have the brains to do it. I don’t think they have the brains to make the pivot, though. The selective-view market is not moving left, it’s moving right. If they’re smart they’ll figure out how to recover.

One obvious reason was what I saw last night on the Piers Morgan show he was interviewing Jonah Goldberg actually Morgan was interrogating Goldberg. I couldn’t believe what I was watching Morgan wouldn’t let Goldberg finish answering any of the questions Morgan asked him and it was the most confrontational interview I had seen in a very long time. Morgan was shooting questions at Goldberg in rapid fire in an attempt to create a gotcha moment. Goldberg was on the show to plug his new book and this type of treatment you could only expect from someone who is a paid employee of the Obama reelection campaign. Morgan was clearly in attack mode and wanted to do harm to Goldberg but instead Morgan made himself look vicious and petty. I will never watch Morgan after last night’s display. Besides most of his guests are Hollywood liberals of the very far left variety if that is your idea of scintillating programming.
All the while Piers was looking down his nose at Goldberg, so what else is new. Anderson Cooper plays the dummy when he asks questions. Thank god they got rid of Campbell Brown years ago, she was one nasty Bitch. CNN is over and MSNBC will be next.

Does anyone realize how few people actually watch these shows. The networks and the hosts think that millions of people want to tune in to see political wonks debate each other. In the end, their only audience is themselves. They all go on each other’s shows to see how many 1099′s they can collect.
I stopped watching CNN because they no longer report news and instead are simply stenogrohpers for whomever they are invterviewing so the viewer is left to guess on what the fact is. If a right winger says x and a left winger says y, the CNN anchor concludes by thanking both guests and going to commercial break without ever infoming the viewer on what the truth is. Then you have Erinn Burnett who is so elite she has utter contempt for working people. She is married to a citibank executive and refuses to report on any topic that is anti business or pro middle class. That may work great on CNBC which is where she came from but it won’t gain viewers on CNN. Not sure why she ever left CNBC.

They interview people involved in creating those facts, and lead us to draw our own conclusions, with some very pointed questions on our behalf, and to provide perspective. I do not need anyone to TELL me what the truth is, because I read and listen to as many news programs, including the BBC and CBC, as I have time, for perspective. Remember perspective? That is someone’s viewpoint on a subject, following the facts, not spoon-fed, predigested pap so its easy to take without thinking.

The ratings are only a testament to the polarization of this country. Fox news and MSNBC have the highest ratings because they cater to the conservative and liberal biases of the people. CNN on the other hand attempts to hold a middle ground and doesn’t cater specifically to one side of the political spectrum. However,FOX News will always have the highest viewers because conservatives tend to be more homogenous, whereas liberals tend to be spread out over several demographics and watch CNN and MSNBC.

CNN plays on the TV monitors at all the LA Fitness locations. Maybe that’s padding CNN’s numbers! By the way LA Fitness also shows MSNBC, but never Fox News. I think the corporate heads have forbidden it.
