The only ratings news CNN is getting lately is bad news. Last week, the cable news network had its lowest-rated weekday primetime in 20 years in terms of total viewers. From May 14-18, CNN averaged 395,000 viewers in primetime with Anderson Cooper’s AC360 and Piers Morgan Tonight. The full seven days of last week was the third-lowest-rated full week in primetime since March 1997. Additionally, last Monday to Friday was also the network’s fourth-lowest-rated weekday primetime week among adults 25-54. CNN scored just 111,000 viewers in the demo. CNN’s previous worst weekly weekday primetime among adults 25-54 was May 15-21, 2000, when the network recorded 91,000 viewers among adults 25-54.
This ratings news comes less than a week after the network hit its lowest primetime among adults 25-54 in 15 years on May 15 with Pier Morgan Tonight. That followed a terrible April where CNN had its lowest-rated month in a decade.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

They should get Oprah to take over CNN, merge it with Oprah’s network. Have a grand ole’ time talking up what a great job Obama is doing.
I don’t know, I found Peirs Morgan’s interview with the kid who bags his groceries riveting. “So, Bobby, do you find it easier to use paper or plastic, and do you double bag items such as milk?”
Look at who runs CNN. That will tell you why it’s rating are falling.
Maybe they need to get Glen Beck and Lou Dobbs back. At least they could generate some thought provoking discussions. Now, the whole network looks like it is being broadcast straight from DNC headquarters with Axelrod holding the cue cards.
I do agree that a “hard news” channel would be refreshing. Even Headline News has gone away from that format. Please don’t tell me what to think about the news. Just report it all, and do it honestly, fairly, and with integrity. No ideologies on either side. I promise we will watch.
Anderson Cooper is actually an excellent reporter and not-so-terrible an analyst, when he approaches both sides equally. I have always been impressed with his coverage of very dangerous situations in some awful places, when he was younger.
Other than Cooper, CNN should fire everyone and start with a clean slate. They need to hire some libertarians, conservatives, and centrists to replace their almost completely liberal present staff. People can roll their eyes at the same old liberal hokum on all of the other stations. CNN would be smart to try to compete with Fox in going after the center and center-right of the country — the place where most Americans reside.
I used to have CNN on constantly in the background if I wasn’t “watching tv” and just working around the house. They seemed above the fray compared to the negative and bickering FOX News and MSNBC. Now I put them in the same category as MSNBC and get my news from overseas. No real reporting done anymore….everything is slanted with opinion.
One of their problems is management look at Anderson Cooper as a example, they have designated (and are paying him 4 million +) him to be the face of CNN and he still has never delivered the ratings. Management needs to wake up and stop throwing money down the hole but Jim Walton is the same genius who gave him a raise then allowed his “franchise player” to report for 60 Minutes and stop reporting from the field to do a talk show.
The solution is very simple.
People just want the news.
News channels need to get out of the opinion business and just stick to delivering the news.
News channels need to get out of the talk show business. Just stick to delivering the news.
i should have said that the rest, centrists and right leaning, go to Fox, or other outlets, like the internet and talk radio.
Of course, the networks still rule overall, just because they are still free, and in more homes.
Fox News is right of center, but closest to the center of all the cable news. It’s true. Fox employes MANY Democrats as on-air personalities. Even Jesse Jackson’s daughter is a Fox commentator.
MSNBC is VERY left of center, and proud of it.
CNN pretends to be the center, but is clearly left of center.
CNN’s peroblem is they are being dishonest with who they say they are.
LOL. Come on. MSNBC’s morning program is “Morning Joe” with one of the leaders of the 1994 Republican Revolution, Joe Scarborough (and non-entity Mika something). So you got 4 hours of lib programming at night, and 3 hours of con programming in the morning.
Tell you what, if FNC changes its morning show to “AM Alan” hosted by Alan Grayson, then there’d be an argument that the two are in any way equivalent.
Joe Scarborough is a RINO, that is why he works there – so they can claim to have at least someone who leans conservative. But he doesn’t – he’s nothing more than a liberal enabler.
Jesus, now even the 1994 “revolutionaries” are considered RINOS? Well, I suppose if Gingrich’s group had studied the French Revolution, they’d know that revolutions tend to eat their own.
Scar’s hardly the GOP equivalent of Ben Nelson. Guy takes the RW position 9 times out of 10, its just that the 10th is the only one that makes HuffPo and the RW blogs.
Let’s put this another way: if MSNBC replaced Scar with Grayson, do you think that would make their content more liberal? The answer’s obvious.
If they were not on in every airport what would cnn’s ratings be. Similar to time magazine being in every Dr’s office. Not many people choose to watch or read either.
All I want to watch is decent world news like the BBC..Why on earth that can’t happen here?!!
With all but one news organization fighting to appeal to the left side of the political spectrum, there’s a lot of competition out there. Obviously, being a successful business enterprise is not what’s motivating these people.
The only thing that can save these news organizations is some sort of equal time requirement built in to our TVs, where after you watch Fox News for thirty minutes you must then watch 30 minutes of news on NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, your local news station (and perhaps read Time, Newsweek, and your local newspaper) before your TV will allow you to watch Fox News again.
CN Who???
It’s time to pull the plug on CNN, but Time Warner doesn’t have anything better to replace it with. Same with what used to be called CNN Headline News.. they’re both unwatchable now.
CNN is in a tough spot. They are of course biased hard left so no conservatives or libertarians will watch. Moderates don’t watch the news. Democrats like the left bias but their network of choice is the marxist news network MSNBC. This basically leaves CNN without an audience.
actually, im a moderate. i watch news.
i just dont watch CNN. its not news.
and sorry if im out of sequence, but i like that idea where if you watch fox, or cnn…you have to watch an equal part of another.
having said that, its a sure way that NOBODY will watch news lol.
Down and going further!! Last night was typical. AC360 let a talking head go on and on about how bad Bain and Romney were for the country even though AC realy thought he was being fair, he simply let the guy go on and on without a real challange to his comments. AC challange was just an opening that allowd the head to keep on spewing the junk. I am always surprised at their “unintended” left slant on all their “news”.
I quit watching CNN years ago, as well as Fox. Will probably cut out the others soon, except for Discovery and Natl Geographic channels. At least these two don’t pretend to carry the news or to have “journalists”.
CNN hasn’t been a news company since the Clinton era. MSNBC survives because it is a human cartoon and like cartoons, they appeal to the shallow end of the gene pool.
Paolo, as a cartoonist I take umbrage at that. We appeal to the short end, not the shallow end. Unless you were referring to adults? But then adults don’t watch MSNBC, do they?
I intended no offense to your profession and thank you for being professional and understanding the point.
Shocked, I tells ya!
If your closest competitor at the bottom is MSNBC …you may want to change the company your in. Start reporting the truth about Obama and his agenda, lack of knowledge of financing etc
There are enough people in the entire world who want real news to support a quality cable news channel. CNN International aims higher than CNN US so start by cutting the domestic fluff and use a lot more of what they show to the rest of the world. Then stop trying to compete with Fox for the same audience.
So if 90% of the world wants their delusions reenforced that still leaves 70 million who want to peak outside Plato’s cave.
How do you expect anybody to take you seriously when you won’t critique the president or democrats… thats bad enough…but when you start shilling for them thats criminal….Americans are not stupid and your finding it out the hard way
recently 43 catholic organizations sued the administration on the health care mandate…silence from CNN..considering there are 83 million catholics and its a constitutionla issue I would say its a pretty big story…not to CNN…wonder why your ratings are in the dumps…left wing propaganda thats why
