The news just went from bad to worse at CNN. After the cable news network delivered its lowest-rated month in total viewers in over a decade in April, May became CNN’s worst month in primetime among total viewers in over 20 years. From April 30 to May 27, the cable news network attracted an average of 389,000 viewers in primetime. It was also CNN’s second-lowest-rated month in primetime among the 25-54 demographic (114,000) since October 1991. Only May 2000, with 104,000 viewers in the demo, did worse. Piers Morgan Tonight received the lowest total viewer and 25-54 demo numbers that CNN has had in the 9 PM time slot in two decades. The interview show got only 417,000 total viewers and 117,000 among the 25-54 demographic. At 7 PM, Erin Burnett, another relative CNN newcomer, had the lowest 25-54 demo numbers in 20 years in the time slot for the network and the second lowest after June 2001, in two decades in terms of total viewership. Burnett’s show attracted just 89,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo from April 30 to May 27. The latest numbers follow CNN hitting its lowest-rated weekday primetime in 20 years during the week of May 14-18.

I recall living at Ft. Bragg, NC in ’78 when CNN debuted. They said no one would watch it and it wouldn’t last. And now it’s 2012.
CNN opened on June 1, 1980. I was there they fired me in 1999, I was 39 and a Time Warner Exec. who was 65 at the time, told me I was too old to be a producer. Big fan of Ted and I can tell you he is not happy with the direction Time Warner is taking his pride and joy.
It’s like they don’t even care anymore. The personalities they have now have very little likeability and draw low ratings. Whoever thought bringing in Eliot Spitzer was a good idea shouldn’t even be working in the news business any more. That had bad idea written on it from the very beginning. And they replace Larry with Piers Morgan?! At least find someone who people like and will want to tune into every night.
I was a producer/editor at CNN from 1989-1993. America is not fooled. Obama/Soetoro is not a “natural born Citizen” according to the Constitution. In 2000 CNN had Constitution attorneys on with legal analysis 24/7 explaining the nuances of the electoral college and hanging chads during that Presidential election. There is a cover-up of epic proportions in progress and Americans want “The Rule of Law” upheld. If CNN would cover this Constitutional Crisis and demand it be resolved based on facts and empirical truth, their ratings would go through the roof. Art2SuperPAC is promoting the establishment of a legally binding vetting apparatus to prevent CNN from covering for future usurpers to the Office of the Presidency. I am a Plaintiff in a ballot challenge case in the state of Georgia which is on its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, but then CNN didn’t tell you.

I remember being stuck in an airport and cnn had some program on about a double felon drug dealer who we were all supposed to sympathize with because wah wah wah HE COULDN’T GET TAX PAYER FUNDED HOUSING. it was literally a victim piece with HIM as the victim.

Fox business is lower in ratings isn’t it?… The Evening News on NBC ABC CBS gets 20 to 25 million combined, FOX 2-5 million. There is plenty of politics in the entertainment shows and that is what people watch.
Fox News Channel is trully a goverment watchdog news station. Often CNN anchors try to lecture their TV watchers. CNN gives me no value at all.

Proof beyond doubt that Piers Morgan is ratings poison. He is fast becoming as hated here in the US as he is by his own people in the UK. They couldn’t wait to get rid of him. As many Brits are aware Piers is an absolute disgrace to journalism, having been fired from the newspaper he edited for publishing fake photos of British troops abusing prisoners during the gulf war. He also narrowly avoided jail (his employees weren’t so lucky) after instructing journalists that worked for him to hype up stock that he had recently bought in his newspaper’s business pages so he could get rich. On top of all this his recent published “diaries” were found to be an absolute tissue of lies, with entries fabricated years after the fact to embellish his own reputation. How’s that reputation looking now? Hopefully this news will finally wipe that stupid smug grin off his face, and him from our TV screens.

The “news” business is less about news and ratings than it is about propaganda. CNN maintains its programming schema not because it makes money, or enhances reputations, its because those who back the network know its primary mission is to provide a platform to disseminate a specific message. No chance CNN changes at this point. Morgan will remain as long as he can provide soundbites that motivate the core of the US Democrat party. The best recent example is the press coverage given by CNN to a relatively small, well funded Democrat party exercise called “Occupy Wallstreet.” A brazen attempt by Soros and Axelrod to motivate the youth in the US to get motivated in this election season. CNN led the charge in publicizing it. Propaganda organ for the Left is CNN’s mission statement.

Whenever I am in a public place ( except airports) I ask to change to FOX News! Hotel Breakfast bars are where I am most successful at getting CNN off the air. Join me in changing channels in public establisments.

I sat next to a fellow at BWI last year, waiting for my late flight. Somehow, he had his iPhone set up as a remote control, and he was changing the TVs at our gate to “Law & Order”.
No one cared – in fact, people started watching.

I agree with this comment. CNN has become more Conservative and Romney-esk in tone which is actually why I believe it has slipped. As an Independent, I feel it tries much too hard to project a non-biased position and very few of us feel comfortable enough to go along with the fraud being perpetuated right in front of our eyes. We just sense, something is not right here and that makes us feel badly for watching. So we don’t. I think we’d rather they choose a position and stick with it. Biased or unbiased? Sing out Louise.

Supposedly we are a center-right country and if media viewer/listenership is any indication, that would seem to be true: we can all vote with the knob on the TV/radio. Left leaning media is generally losing audience share, whether it’s CNN, the big three networks, the NY Times, MSNBC, Air America, etc. One has to wonder at what point financial reality will come up and slap leftist ideology in the face, because these organizations have to be bleeding money and losing advertisers. At the same time FOX news is gaining market share, CNBC seems to be in the process of reinventing itself as a channel friendly to business/capitalism and conservative talk radio has many well known personalities: Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Lavine, Miller, Beck, Mancow, Liddy, Schnitt, etc. I can’t name any liberal hosts with the same degree of success. Not even close.
And while CNN leans left, it has a way to go before catching MSNBC. For example, Obama’s new campaign phrase is “Forward” and MSNBC’s new tag line is “Lean Forward”. Can it get any more blatant? BTW, it’s interesting that the term “forward” has been used by Marx and Engels and other Communist and Fascist groups for various newsletters, posters, signage, etc. A quick glance at Wikipedia can confirm this, if they haven’t pulled the references by now. You would think that someone with the President’s resources would have researched this phase better before using it, but then perhaps he did.

CNN is in a constant downward spiral, it really appeals to no one anymore. They claim to be neutral but they are very left leaning… however the handful of people in the country that are really liberals would rather watch MSNBC, which is a dedicated radical left wing news outlet. This is why, although MSNBC is down, they are relatively steady, holding on to their small niche market and grabbing a handful from CNN. FOX on the other hand is down as well, more so because they hit record highs in 2009 and were coming back to a normal level.
More and more people will drift away from cable news… and cable in general I think and move towards the internet. FOX will be the last man standing because they are the only outlet that actually appeals to the majority of Americans.

In point of fact, Fox News is NOT at its lowest rating in 20 years. Fox News began in 1996 with fewer than 200,000 average viewers per week. Sixteen years later, Fox News in May 2012 had 1.69 million viewers.
In fact, the only time that Fox News has dropped in viewers in 16 years was 2003 to 2004, 2005 to 2006, and a small one around 2008. Those drops were all under 20 percent declines in viewers and most of them under 10 percent declines.
Measuring the period from 2000 to today, CNN started with about 400,000 total viewers (that’s twice as much as Fox, descender, in case math escapes you as much as research does). As of May 2012, CNN’s TOTAL VIEWERS per week was 389,000. That’s DOWN from their height of about 700,000 viewers in 2008.
So, once again (and as always), you’re wrong, descender. Not EVERY cable news network is experiencing 20 year lows for viewership. Not by a long shot.

Also, I just looked at Fox News there, because it was easiest, but MSNBC AND Headline News are both up over their lowest points in the last ten years (and the last 20).

I am not surprised Piers Morgan and Erin Burnett have the lowest ratings. Personally, I can’t stand either of them. He’s a bloviating hack and she is a wall street shill and both of which are over the top arrogant and smug. CNN should dump them. However, given how juvenile most of CNN’s news coverage has been, I guess Burnett and Morgan fit right in. Burnett was the last straw for me – I watch CNN far less than I used to.

Anyone “center-right” (which is pretty right-wing considering this country) is already watching Fox News 24/7. CNN needs their own identity instead of trying to get Fox News viewers (who are definitely not going to switch the channel except, maybe, when Shep Smith is on) or MSNBC watchers to switch over to them.

I was on a cruise for a week. The only news channel was CNN. It had no real news. I paid a lot of money to access the internet so I could access news. CNN sucks.
Certainly Not News might do better up against Saturday Night Live. As a Canadian who used to think America was the beacon of hope…very huge disappointment. America lecturing the world about freedom etc. simply a joke of a country. Bad food, bad politics, bad taste…a brand being rejected globally and for many good reasons.

During the first Gulf War CNN lead the way! I loved it. It made the insanity of war come to life. I kept it on all the time. But that was long ago…
When the ratings made headline I decided why not check it out again. The story involved the Catholic Church. Now I’m not a Catholic but while the two CNN employees were on the air they were not just angry – they seemed to “hate” the Catholic Church. Now this was a news show, not a commentary program. I was waiting for facts on the story and those two just played off each other instead. This is not the CNN I once enjoyed. I turned off CNN and went to the BBC on the Internet – I wanted news not commentary!
