The news just went from bad to worse at CNN. After the cable news network delivered its lowest-rated month in total viewers in over a decade in April, May became CNN’s worst month in primetime among total viewers in over 20 years. From April 30 to May 27, the cable news network attracted an average of 389,000 viewers in primetime. It was also CNN’s second-lowest-rated month in primetime among the 25-54 demographic (114,000) since October 1991. Only May 2000, with 104,000 viewers in the demo, did worse. Piers Morgan Tonight received the lowest total viewer and 25-54 demo numbers that CNN has had in the 9 PM time slot in two decades. The interview show got only 417,000 total viewers and 117,000 among the 25-54 demographic. At 7 PM, Erin Burnett, another relative CNN newcomer, had the lowest 25-54 demo numbers in 20 years in the time slot for the network and the second lowest after June 2001, in two decades in terms of total viewership. Burnett’s show attracted just 89,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo from April 30 to May 27. The latest numbers follow CNN hitting its lowest-rated weekday primetime in 20 years during the week of May 14-18.

CNN could shoot a puppy live on air and no one would watch it. Pleanty of people would see coverage of it on FOX news though.
Too many whacky hosts. It’s like a British invasion. Most of them (all) are dedicated liberal nut jobs. I can’t even watch for comedic relief anymore. Seems like they want confrontation instead of gathering facts. I admire Ted Turner. It’s time for him to re-evaluate and adjust.
CNN’s target audience is the 18% of Americans that identify themselves as liberal. When you dismiss 82% of Americans, your ratings are going to be low. They used to throw Conservatives a bone with Beck and Dobbs, then they fired then making their network 100% liberal.
CNN and MSNBC have driven away what few Republicans that would put up with a daily beating, now they’re gone not likely to return. If they were truly fair and non bias they’d have 2x the viewers and not have reps for being left-wing porn. If they only want liberal veiwers that’ll be all they’ll get…and sooner or latter they’ll get sick of watching non stop hate.
They put Piers with the Donald, then Piers with G. Bush on CNN International at 8 am in Rio de Janeiro and wonder why their rating are off. It will take Amanpour,GPS or anyone with intelligence to get me to watch.
Gloria Borger’s husband is a lobbyist for the military industrial complex. Anderson Cooper is the son of Gloria Vanderbilt. Erin Burnett is a mouthpiece for the CFR.
They are all war propagandists, they lie, they twist the truth. They deserve what they are getting now.
Turner’s right. They should be the 24/7 serious journalism network. Competing with computers and cell phones with gadgets is embarrassing. Plus make a couple of decent Fox News hires. Sheppard Smith would be a good start. Erin Burnett was an excellent hire. Turn down the personality. Turn up old-fashioned shoe leather reporting and the news. I think CBS News (Viacom I guess) should buy it. With what FOX News and MSNBC are – that niche (the Murrow thing) exists. Smart people, smart analysis, fire the crazies who just repackage what they just read online earlier in the day. You just may get ratings by ceasing to chase them. Wouldn’t it be great if the Father Coughlin/Joe McCarthy era of Yapping Head News would draw to a close? Just because the squeaky wheel gets the grease doesn’t mean the automobile isn’t three tires short of a reasonable ride. Television news should seek to illuminate and improve society not just reflect it.
You lost all credibility when you wrote “Erin Burnett was an excellent hire.” She rolls her eyes anytime a conservative says ANYTHING. She called Bush a monkey. I wonder if she would ever call Obama the same thing and still have a job? She’s boring on top of being a lefty.
maybe they can hire b mayer, i hear he is looking for a job.
You would think CNN with its incredible resource would start to take journalism seriously, instead of the usual misinformation the pundits have been known to spew. Their credibility is shot, ive talked to no one that believes CNN.
CNN’s biggest problem is that they have no likeable anchor with the exception of Anderson Cooper. They need to get some personalities.
I doubt anyone is still watching that uninformative news network. Does CNN really think they’re still relevant? I gave up watching any news from any of the networks mainly & the general consensus is that they promote NOTHING but propaganda by host who are just shills for big corporations. Internet news is far superior in getting information & I make my own mind up after not have some shill telling me what to think.
CNN? fuck them, their time has come for them to die by the hand of the people.
piers is a horrible horrible interviewer, pursed lips smiling fool. i miss larry. loved the larry king show he is a hoot.
Forget the politics (which are consistently left of center from CNN) it is just incredily boring to watch this channel. They have NOTHING to say that is interesting or thought provoking. To paraphrase what Nietzsche said about newspapers, “CNN vomits its bile and calls it a newscast.”
CNN has become entertainment “news”, slanted opinion “news”, talking heads whose content is just fillers; clutter graphics; excessive voice over & content does not contribute to live segments; definitely axe Piers as his time slot is wasted – he is not prepared nor can ask pertinent, well informed questions. I spoke with older professional people – they don’t even tune in. CNN executives, if you are reading this – you need to get another j-o-b. You waste a perfectly good platform. Most people (regular people) want hard news, investigative pieces not shock n awe paparazzi type “news”. Well though out written feature pieces. Do what other “networks” are NOT doing.
You hit the nail on the head. Let’s see some real domestic and international journalism. +1. Amen.
CNN has ‘spawned’ a few good reporters commentators and anchors over the years: Lou Dobbs, Bill Hemmer, Glenn Beck and Lou Waters, just to name a few. The addition of Will Cain provides the viewer a different perspective on various issues. Anderson Cooper occasionally practices random acts of journalism, but for the life of me, I just don’t get Piers Morgan!
Frankly, I quit watching anything CNN years ago – as well as any network news – simply because I got sick and tired of their agendized reporting. I actually have more respect for MSNBC; at least they don’t hide who they are.
The problem with CNN is that nowadays it’s all fluff pieces and holograms… Jon Stewart regularly points out how bad CNN has become, yet nothing changes, it only becomes worse. If they’d finally go back to hard news coverage with likeable hosts, they would have me back as a viewer.
Yep. They might not get the ratings Fox News, but it would be a lot better than what they’re doing now. There are people that have abandoned CNN for alternative news sources that might take a peak again if they committed to hard news. And I mean real hard news, not their superficial Syria updates.
Just watch the video of the exchange between Sununu and Soladad. It really sums up what is wrong with CNN. They are trying to be more like msnbc than a real news organization. As an independent I tried both and I now watch fox news.
by the way, does ANYONE like soladad? how annoying.
Loads of bad media news all around. CNN’s decline- see above. New York Times Co. now worth $1 billion- half the value of Pandora. New Orleans Times-Picayune- publishing only three days a week beginning this fall. Seems like this liberal philosophy business model isn’t working. But don’t tell the executives at these companies.
Did Matt Sludge post a link to this post? The righties can barely contain their glee in the comments.
I don’t know why MSNBC is being dragged into this conversation, CNN would kill for their primetime ratings at this point. They’re doing fine.
CNN needs its own identity. They tried being Fox News Lite, and that failed. Their attempt at being centrist and above Fox News and MSNBC is failing. They should just air CNN International for a few months, clear house from top to bottom and come back with all new personalities.
Comments like ‘Matt Sludge’? How does that address the problem? BTW while Drudge does have a Finke link in his reporters column he did not link this article. These comment are from people who read DHD. No surprise that CNN is tanking – the fact that so many have mentioned is correct – their anchors are just not people we want to be around. They are pompous, petty, and without any humor or personality. And agenda? Example – Piers Morgan is interviewing the Dalai Lama and asks him what leaders he liked and then nudged him to say he liked Nelson Mandela when the DL did not come up with a name right away. Then the DL volunteers another name – George W Bush, adding several compliments. Morgan could not change the subject fast enough. We were laughing, it was so funny..
Still pissed at Drudge for forcing the networks to “mention” the Clinton/Lewinsky thing, eh Brit?
As bad as the ratings are, I’m still stunned that 417,000 people watch Piers Morgan. What would someone sit in front of a TV and watch that? I just can’t imagine any possible appeal that show would have for anyone. As far as I’ve ever seen, he brings absolutely nothing to the table, just a complete black hole as a host, and he has never had any interesting guests on his show.
Is that a such a thing as a negative rating?
Anderson Cooper is to journalism like Dr Pepper is to the soda market:
We’ve all heard of Dr. Pepper but we don’t know anyone who drinks it.
Have you ever noticed that the presenters on Fox look as if they’ve been embalmed?
I don’t get it. I am center right..i.e. fiscal conservative, and social moderate. I watch CCN because they ARE FAIR and
BALANCED,and always have a democrat and a republican whenever the program goes into politics, as opposed to msnbc which goes all the way to the left, and fox which is always all the way to the right.
I have no idea how Blitzer, King, Burnett, or Cooper votes, and do not care. I am an independent and voted for McCain last time, and Clinton, and Bush #1, and Reagan in his second term. But I will not vote for Romney as I have no idea what his real views are.
A difficult choice this time around for me.
