CNN fell to a 15 year primetime low last night in a key demo and limboed down to its second worse weekday primetime since March 1997. A new episode of Piers Morgan Tonight at 9 PM drew in only 39,000 viewers in the Adult 25-54. The news network itself averaged just 308,000 viewers in primetime with Morgan’s show and Anderson Cooper’s AC360 leading at 8 PM and again at 10 PM. CNN had 73,000 viewers in the Adult 25-54 during Tuesday’s primetime. This comes on the heels of April’s bad news when the network had its lowest-rated month in over a decade. The forensics on the 9 PM slot’s low Adult 25-54 numbers are revealing. The last time a CNN show had that kind of demo numbers in that weekday timeslot was on August 22, 1997. Back in 1997, a Larry King Live show on a Friday night got 50,000 viewers in the Adult 25-54. However unlike 1997, when the show’s total viewership was 693,000, Morgan’s show last night only had a total viewership of 284,000. That actually wasn’t actually a record low for Morgan’s show, which debuted on January 17, 2011, but it was down from a regular weekday. Over on Fox News, Sean Hannity had 1.7 million viewers in the 9 PM slot, with 334,000 viewers in the Adult 25-54. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show had 839,000 viewers, with 315,000 in the Adult 25-54. In the last 15 years, CNN’s overall weekday primetime numbers have only been worse on Thanksgiving Day 2011. On November 24, 2011, CNN had a primetime average of 262,000 viewers. The Adult 25-54 viewership on that Thursday night was 83,000. That’s what they call a very slow news night.

Very sad turn of events. People are flocking to the “Democrats are stupid!” channel and the “Republicans are stupid!” channel. I mean, who wants to watch the “Will.I.Am Hologram” channel? Me? I listen to NPR and BBC News.
You wonder what happened to CNN? Have you watched Wolf Blitzer or Piers or most of their “News” programs – they have completely lost their ‘mojo’ when it comes to reporting the news. Wolf doesn’t listen to the people he is interviewing and his follow-ups are mostly non sequitur’s. News shows are mostly entertainment news and they largely ignore World events unless it is a riot somewhere. And, yes, I know there is an election this year, but should it occupy 95% of the airtime? I don’t watch Fox News, but I used to watch CNN, not hardly anymore.
I haven’t watched televised news for 10 years. I am disgusted by the manipulation, framing and agendas. I watch the only news that matters anyone, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report where they have the decency to illuminate the ridiculousness of it all.
“I watch the only news that matters anyone, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report where they have the decency to illuminate the ridiculousness of it all.”
That’s where you get your news from? Sad. I know it’s supposed to be comedy, but it’s just as sinister in it’s agenda as the networks it attacks.
Of course, numerous studies show that audiences for The Daily Show and Colbert Report know more about current events than people who watch FOX. You probably missed that.
Wolf Blitzer and ‘the world’s best news team” are now huddled in the CNN glass box for a high level discussion of the ratings. John King will handle the graphics. Piers is serving steak and kidney pie.
and, most importantly, Erin will still be looking good.
CNN claims to be the “middle ground” between the Fox and MSNBC bookends, but its bias is as obvious and offensive as either of those two. CNN, however, is far more insidious exactly because it claims to have no agenda. Of course, their bias is too obvious to fool and is anathema to the great, great majority of its potential audience. Off to the dustheap of basic cable, and not soon enough.
When 99 percent of news is controlled by liberal media, someone’s bound to fall. Love that conservatives are the new under dogs! Fight on!
CNN is losing viewers right and left because guess what? Most Americans don’t want a half hour of fucking news about Syria. They also don’t want to watch Anderson Cooper giggle his way into oblivion. And Piers Morgan!? It was kinda sweet the first couple of times he asked a guest how many times they’d been properly in love. It then became just as obnoxious as his insistence on telling some American how to be a better American. Piers Morgan is on the right side of many issues but that doesn’t mean he needs to be a blowhard about it. He’s polished the tabloid essence but it’s still overbearing and cheap. Wolf Blitzer seems to have an agenda every time he opens his mouth.
CNN needs new management.
But at least there’s no Nancy Grace on it.
It’s tempting to say that if most Americans don’t want a half hour of news about Syria, that’s simply symptomatic of the well known American ignorance about the rest of the world. But then CNN’s coverage doesn’t go beyond the bombs, bullets and battles to explore the political, religious, social, tribal, economic, etc. factors. Most of CNN’s time is trivia and tabloid, playing with their electronic toys, and Blitzer’s inability to shut up and to cease his pedantic self-promoting ego-trips.
I’d add Al Jazeera to the list of legitimate news sources — but, of course, in most of the U.S. it’s not available!
You hit the nail Hwhite. How come NPR is able to report on stuff other than politics, including international news, in a non-confrontational way, without the same panel of pundits waiting to discuss or “analyze” each and every story? Programs like Morning Edition or All Things Considered get pretty big ratings. I know it’s radio and the comparison is not really fair, but still it shows people do have an interest in news and in depth reporting, not just in political shoutfests, “traffic on the fives” or huge natural disasters.
Please, please let this be the reason that they fire Piers Morgan. He is the anchor to their sinking ship. Truly the worst interviewer in the history of television. He makes Arsenio Hall look like Mike Wallace.
Its sad when Chiller beats you in the ratings…
If you are talking about this week, weren’t there basketball games and AGT that would eat the 24-49 demo…?
AGT as in America’s Got Talent? Why would a talent show on network television be competition to CNN? CNN’s ratings are in the toilet because of CNN.
Well, AGT and basketball didn’t eat Hannity’s or Maddow’s numbers…
Very well said “bryan.” You hit the nail on the head.
They days of CNN actually meaning anything are long gone.
CNN is just dreadful, from AM to PM. It’s not the their bias, their anchors, reporting and programming are total garbage. I hate Fox News and find MSNBC ridiculous at the best of times, but at least they put on stuff that’s watchable.
CNN is a bore. They run the same story over and over again. There is virtually no news presentation of world events on a daily basis and the reporters and commentators in many areas are not heavy hitters. There are some who are good like Gupta. CNN also lacks a cutting edge in journalism which people are looking for today. The round table discussions are a complete bore as they are lead by reporters who often simply don’t have a grasp of the big picture.
Morgan did everything he could to start a race war during the Treyvon martin thing. I guess he wanted to make himself famous or something. I will never look at CNN again -
Im a subscriber of Direct TV. Im thinking of leaving them because I can get CNN free but, If I asks for Fox News I have to go to a programing that charges the maximun and Im out of a job for a long time. So the statistics that you show are even worst for CNN.
