EXCLUSIVE: Chris McKenna (Community) has closed a two-year overall deal with Universal Television. Under the pact, he will develop and supervise new and existing projects for the studio. McKenna spent the last three seasons as a co-executive producers on the cult NBC/Sony TV comedy series Community. “Chris is a talented, funny writer who has written memorable episodes of Community,” Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria said. “We’ve been long-time fans and are excited to develop with him this year.” McKenna, repped by UTA, Magnet Management and attorney David Matlof, started his TV career as a staff writer on Fox’s animated comedy American Dad where he worked his way up the ranks to supervising producer before segueing to Community. This is the latest writer-producer overall pact for Universal TV, which has been beefing up its talent roster.

Congrats, Chris! Could not happen to a more talented, nicer, or taller guy. Spread your gigantic birdie wings and fly!
An extremely lovely, extremely talented man with well-tailored shirts. Well deserved!
Is Universal TV the only studio that’s actually trying this year?
Congrats to Chris! A smart, talented fellow if there ever was one. Plus he bears some resemblance to a young Orson Welles, which can’t be bad.
Couldn’t happen to a sweeter guy! So proud of you Chris. Just remember back to those bogwan nights in Nashville…
Congratulations, Chris. He’s written my favorite episodes of Community.
Any TV writer will tell you the name on an episodic script is mostly meaningless. While that writer may have contributed a lot to the script, the ultimate credit (or blame) belongs to the showrunner.
That’s absolutely true, but I can assure you he and his brother were responsible for the absolute worst episodes of American Dad. Even the room couldn’t fix them.
That’s absolutely not true. In fact, it’s so not true I suspect that comment was probably written by Chris or Matt themselves as a joke. Anyone who worked on American Dad will tell you Chris is a superstar. (Although I stand by my comment above, that the names on the script are generally meaningless.)
We know this is you again, Megan.
He wrote a script for ABC that is the funniest thing I’ve ever read, bar none. Congrats to Chris and kudos to Universal TV. “It is the best day!”
