EXCLUSIVE: Emmy-winning comedy writer-producer Tucker Cawley has signed a two-year overall deal with Universal Television. Under the pact, the Everybody Loves Raymond alum will serve as executive producer/showrunner on the studio’s NBC comedy series Up All Night, which was renewed for a second season with a 13-episode order. Cawley was most recently co-executive producer on the first season of the series, created/executive produced by Emily Spivey and starring Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph. As showrunner, Cawley succeeds Jon Pollack, who moved to another NBC/Universal TV comedy series, the newly-picked up Go On. Cawley, repped by CAA and attorneys Patti Felker and Bruce Gelman, won an Emmy Award for writing the Baggage episode of CBS’ Everybody Loves Raymond and shared in the show’s two best comedy series Emmys. His series credits also include TNT’s Men Of a Certain Age and NBC’s Parks & Recreation.TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Tucker’s the best!
The “Baggage” episode of ELR was one of the best 30 min. Of TV. But you have to be joking about this deal. How many failed pilots? I’m counting 5, unless you count the script he didn’t finish this year. Not asked back on Parks & rec and um, “Hank” anybody?
Maybe that’s how how hard it is to find someone willing to run for Up All Night…
Seems like everyone’s getting a little overall happy. Why not just give him a show deal. Cawley’s original work has never been impressive.
The irrational exuberance that swept facebook buyers has hit network exex.
Tucker’s a great guy and a great talent. I wish him the best on this.
The dude has been a part of hundreds of episodes of great television. If NBC gave out deals to ten Tucker Cawleys, I might want to tune into more of their shows.
To quote The Wolf “Let’s not go sucking each other’s ****S just yet.” When you talk about an episode being funny, you don’t know how much is the 1st draft writer…. comedy on network TV is by committee
Pollack and Silveri had major roles on both Joey and Perfect Couples. Why are NBC repeating the same mistakes?

We’ve seen this same logic play out for decades. Countless “Friends” writers have been given deals totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, and not one profitable show has emerged from it. We did get “Work It,” which some people have pegged has the worst show in history.
Dan Harmon is true genius who has created two shows many people see as brilliant. Yet no studio will touch him with a ten foot pole.
Instead, Hollywood feels safer dealing with unthreatening hacks who look pleasant in sports jackets. I’m sure Mr Cawley is a nice enough person, but his orginal writing samples are aggressively mediocre. If Hollywood is a microcosm for the corporate world in general, it’s no wonder we’re in a recession.
You hit the nail on the head, man. Smartest comment on here in ages.
wisdom you have
Tucker is one of the best writers I have ever seen. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to have learned from him. Congratulations, Tucker.
Only a 13-episode order renewal from NBC for – Up All Night – NBC why not 22 episodes? Ditto with 30Rock….bring on a entire season NBC…The world is in dire need of comedy shows..Comedy heals the world with laughter.
