UPDATE SUNDAY: I hear that the deal eyed by both sides is for a two-season pickup by TBS, 15 episodes each, which would allow for Cougar Town to be sold in syndication. Negotiations are progressing and if they come to fruition, an announcement could come as soon as early next week.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE SATURDAY 1 PM: Cougar Town is very much on the bubble but a possible cancellation by ABC would not necessarily spell the end of the underrated comedy about a group of wine-loving friends. I’ve learned that TBS has been in talks with Cougar Town producer ABC Studios about potentially picking up the series starring Courteney Cox if ABC ends up canceling it. Sources close to the situation stress that the conversations are preliminary and that transitioning a broadcast series to cable is always tricky financially. “Should the show become available, TEN looks at all opportunities presented to us that fit our brand,” a rep for TBS’ parent Turner Entertainment Networks said, declining further comment.
Cougar Town has had a rough third season. It was taken out of the protected post-Modern Family time slot. Its order was reduced and it was kept off ABC’s fall and midseason schedules until finally landing in the Tuesday 8:30 PM slot after Work It fizzled. Because Cougar Town is produced by ABC’s sister studio, one could assume that the network is aware of the talks with TBS and that the company as a whole might be exploring ways to continue the praised comedy series, which enjoys a devoted following by a core group of passionate fans and is a season away from a shot at syndication.
As ABC is reviewing its comedy pilots for next season, several of its existing series have a good shot at renewals. In addition to Modern Family, The Middle, Suburgatory and Happy Endings, which are assured to return, that also appears very likely for midseason entry Don’t Trust The B—- In Apt. 23, which has several other networks interested and ready to scoop it up if ABC passes. Also looking good to come back is Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing, which had a tough assignment to hold its own as the only multi-camera ABC comedy trying to open a new comedy night for the network. A pickup of Cougar Town by TBS (or ABC) would complicate things for two pilots, CBS’ untitled Louis CK/Spike Feresten project and NBC’s Kari Lizer project, both of which star Cougar Town cast members in second position, Dan Byrd and Josh Hopkins, respectively. If Cougar Town moves to TBS, it would be the second consecutive Bill Lawrence comedy to switch networks, following Scrubs‘ jump to ABC following its 2008 cancellation by NBC. Lawrence co-created Cougar Town with Kevin Biegel. Turner previously picked up another broadcast series, NBC drama Southland, which was recently renewed for a fifth season by TNT.

This move isn’t a very good vote of confidence to the development execs over at TBS. If Men At Work and Tyler Perry’s projects are any indication of their taste, this probably best for all of us.
I can’t disagree more.
Cougar Town took only about six episodes to get into it’s groove. The third season has been genius! It’s really sad because I think it’s the most underrated comedy in television. This cast has personally poured so much time and effort into saving this show. You don’t see that much anymore.
Busy Phillips and Courteney Cox should be dominating the award circuits. Courteney has never once been nominated for an Emmy (including for Friends) and it’s really pathetic. This woman is SUCH an underrated comedic talent. Her lack of recognition will be the saddest part if Cougar Town gets canceled because this is 10x better than her work on Friends.
I agree with everything that Trave says. I recently started watching Cougar Town and it is smart and sweet and charming, and feels somehow sincere. (And I am someone who loathed SCRUBS – that antic, self-conscious, self-congratulatory festival of insufferable smugness.) It’s consistently and surprisingly inventive. It deserves a much larger audience. If everyone who enjoys hanging out with their friends, or enjoys drinking wine (and preferably both at once) watches the show, it will be a huge hit. Let’s make that happen.
Omg! Do you people all work on the show? It isn’t funny. Bill Lawrence is gifted, Scrubs was a great show but this is a misfire. Let it die already.
Cougar Town is consistently funny and clever. Those who bag on the series don’t watch or haven’t watched many episodes. It deserves at least another two seasons, wherever that may be.
I’d happily watch Cougar Town before half the bigger hit comedies out there just now, so I’d be happy to see it get a shot somewhere else if ABC decides they don’t want it.
But it needs to paired up with something other Tim Allen if it does. They just are not compatible. And yeah, to echo the above remark it’s been in it’s current groove since about episode 6 of Season 1.
Cougar Town is really bad. That’s all I have to say because that’s really all that needs to be said.
Not the biggest fan of Cougar Town, but the few times I’ve watched it, it was cute. And Courtney’s great to look at, as are Busy’s lips <3 I'd rather see them on my TV than the return of Roseanne, that's for damn sure.
A bubble show on ABC would be a juggernaut for TBS, win win.
Courtney has hit the wall. She had “duck lips” from plastic surgery, she’s rail thin with fake boobs. I’d rather watch Goldie Hawn try to smile without snapping a muscle.
You haven’t named any bad things yet. LOL.
Courtney’s lips are unfortunate (and I have more than once described the show to a friend as Botox Town), but the show is genuinely great: sharp, funny, unpredictable, identifiable, warm. In these dark days, it’s a nice cuddle-up, comfort show – with some surprisingly poignant moments – and deserves a larger audience.
Love courtney, in fact entire cast is greatbut writing sub par if memory serves this series already went through one reboot. But why not try one more? It does work on man levels hmmm. Tbs? Sure, why not.
Why oh why would ABC renew Tim Allan?!!! The show doesn’t work creatively and the numbers are pathetic. Is ABC really interested in a show that gets below a 2.0 in 18-49? If so maybe they should renew Work It also.
First off Last Man Standing was doing much better in the fall, second EVERYTHING is down this spring, and third if you look at what “family” sitcoms ABC has in the works they are all along the lines of Last Man Standing, Reba, The Manzanis, it seems like ABC is headed back in the direction they were in the early 90′s.
Last Man Standing’s problem this year was they had nothing to pair it with, Cougar Town is the worst show to pair a family sitcom with. If ABC had Reba and The Manzanis they could have used them with Last Man Standing.
Would be even better to see Community go to TBS along with Cougartown. Now THERE is an hour of comedy.
An awful show. Amazing how many people affiliated with it are posting here. Don’t worry. There will be other jobs.
I don’t get how “getting enough episodes for syndication” makes any sense. Even if the series went two more cycles and got to 90×30 or something, its syndication market off-TBS will be tiny… probably barter only at best.
This awful show isn’t going anywhere in syndication, even if there were 200 episodes (which will never happen, thankfully). It’s awful, plain and simple. There are all kinds of people associated with the show, but the audience has already rejected it, multiple times. It stinks.
I loved Cougar Town for almost its entire run.
Then this season they added Grayson’s ugly as hell, weird, comedy boat anchor kid from a one night stand. That completely disrupted the chemistry between the characters and just made the show creepy as hell.
What a stupid “addition” to the show. Right now I have 2 or 3 episodes saved on the DVR and I just can’t bring myself to watch them.
The kid completely altered the dynamic of the show in a brutally hideous way. It isn’t innocent fun now and it is a damn shame. What a stupid move.
I am a fan of Pig Trials and would welcome it between big bang and family guy reruns.
I know several of the commercial cable channels are looking into broadening into more sitcoms. This seems like a good opportunity.
I like Kari Lizer but recast and let us keep pig trials on tbs
You know when you claim people only like a show because they work on it you come across as both massively moronic and perpetually unemployed.
****I LOVE THIS SHOW. PLEASE DONT CANCEL IT.. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOW. LOVE THE CHARACTERS.****
Cougar Town is laugh out loud funny! The writing is wonderful as are all the actors. I hope ABC’s loss is TBS’s gain!
