Comedy pilot Rebounding is looking to live up to its title as producing studio 20th Century Fox TV has been shopping it to other networks since its surprising pass at Fox two weeks ago. Meanwhile, one of USA Network’s main priorities is getting an original comedy series ready by next summer to launch as a companion to its prized off-network acquisition, ABC hit Modern Family. Could Rebounding fit the bill? I hear USA is looking at the pilot starring Will Forte as a man recovering from the death of his fiancé with help from his idiot buddies on a pickup basketball team.

Rebounding and Modern Family seem like potentially great companions — the two single-camera shows share a sensibility (comedy with heart) and a lot of creative DNA. Rebounding, which was created by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman based on Port’s real-life experiences, is executive produced by Modern Family co-creator/executive producer Steve Levitan in his first major project since Modern Family. The pilot was directed by Jason Winer, who also helmed the pilot for Modern Family, with Levitan and Winer’s collaboration on Rebounding drawing parallels to the duo’s chemistry on Modern Family. The Rebounding pilot actually tested higher than the pilot for Modern Family at the studio. 20th TV produces both Modern Family and Rebounding, which should help a potential deal. (Additionally, 20th TV division Fox21 and sibling Fox TV Studios are behind USA’s two comedy pilots, Paging Dr. Freed and Sirens, respectively.) Levitan also has a relationship with USA, he did a comedic video for the cable network’s upfront presentation last week touting Modern Family‘s fall 2013 launch to USA.

While finding a home for rejected pilot almost never works, 20th TV has had success in the area with the 2010 drama pilot Breakout Kings, which also tested well but didn’t make the cut at Fox. The pilot was picked up to series by A&E, running for two seasons. Of this year’s broadcast pilots, remaining in contention at the networks that ordered them are dramas Guilty at Fox and Gotham at ABC, the latter also produced by 20th TV. Additionally, the CW is redeveloping The Selection and ABC is taking a new stab at adapting British comedy Like Fools And Horses and developing a fish-out-of-water vehicle for Judy Greer.

USA should also think about acquiring Bent from their sister station NBC. Now that was a show with potential and a true gem of a show.
Yeah, I really liked that one and it still irks me that NBC spent so much time on Whitney and that awful Chelsea Handler show instead of burying it like they did.
As for Rebound, I really like Will Forte, so I hope the show turns out to be successful when and if it gets picked up by a network.
Bent was cute and all, but how long would the guy be working on the woman’s house? Shades of Murphy Brown, where it took the painter 10 years to paint Murphy’s house.
BFF was the same; how long would the third wheel chick hang around now that her best friend was engaged?
Nice shows but no legs.
Kinda hope this gets on the air
Booyah! I made this prediction on a deadline post as soon as it wasn’t picked up at Fox! Nice move!
Why doesn’t ABC pick up Rebounding to air after MF?
wait, so Nathan Lane ISN’T the perfect companion for MF?
didn’t see the finished pilot but was my favorite script this pilot season. deserves a home.
If Tim + Eric aren’t gonna do a Fortin’ With Will spinoff like they did with John C. Riley’s character, this is the next best thing we can ask for.
…Save Payne’s Nebraska, of course.
Yes, again try to retool FOOLS HORSES instead of trying out a NEW idea.
This show is depressing. Not at all a good companion for modern family. And it’s not at all like modern family. Bad idea USA. Not the way to launch your brand.
Why do they keep buying shows from Fox where they can’t make a deal?!
If this show tested better then Modern Family then Fox is very stupid for not picking it up. Plus Will Forte is great to watch so i’m hoping this gets picked up somewhere else.
You’re so right. Like in Two and a Half Men, how long would Jon cryer’s character live with his brother after getting divorced? Oh… wait.
This is the Mathew Perry “Moving On!…not to mention 3 other failed pilots. How long are they going to morn the lose of their wife, fiance, significant other?? Show has no where to go… not to menttion fox doesn’t want their own show but expects another network to pick up their discards?? Wachtel’s not that stupid.
Is there a more boring network than USA? With the exception of “Suits,” all of their shows are so run-of-the-mill. Common Law stinks. Fairly Legal — it’s about a mediator — exciting premise. I don’t know a single person who watches this show. I heard that the pilots they scrapped — Over/Under and Wild Card — were pretty good. The rumor is that Bonnie Hammer cares more about hair and wardrobe than she does about compelling television.
USA, for all its “success,” is what’s on in hospital rooms.
Levitan moving over to a new show and having less time to spend on Modern Family. Sounds like very good news for everyone who works on Modern Family. Lots of crossed fingers over there.
That TBS show about four guys that they promoed endlessly during NBA sure looks funny. Take that fresh idea and add the guy who made us all laugh so much with Stacked and I don’t see how this could fail.
Levitank.
USA didn’t want a multiple cam show. Neither would I.
And by that I’m referring to Local Talent, the Nathan Lane/Cheyenne Jackson pilot.
