This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who sat through the credits of The Avengers, or who simply looked at the film’s record-breaking box office sales this past weekend. Still, fans (and investors) will be glad to hear that Disney CEO Bob Iger just announced that the company is developing a sequel. The film’s success “is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.” Demand for Avengers merchandise has been strong, he added.

It’s gonna be marvel vs dc. The purple guy at the end was the purple guy from green lantern which is dc comics…
The purple guy was Thanos, a thinly veiled version of Jack Kirby’s Darkseid, from DC Comics.
Yes! Though not a shock, this was inevitable as Marvel movies are so popular and obviously the after credit scene gave it all away.
I hope they feature the xMen in this one though!
There’s only so many characters a film can have. You have to feel like you’re getting to know them a bit otherwise you’re not going to root for them. The xmen would make it too crowded.
Ditto. Major no brainer there.
Disney stock soars!
Captain America 2 is actually already scheduled for 2014. Be for real.
You need to do some research. There IS going to be a Captain America 2 and there’s nothing anybody can do to stop it.
Theyre gonna focus on captain America and black widow in capt America 2. They do have a thing for each other if you didn’t know. It’s all in the comics
I sat through the whole Avengers film and I will do the same for the Avengers 2, I am a major fan of Marvel and I am elated to hear that an Avengers 2 is in production along with a Thor 2 and Captain America 2 and Iron Man 3, 2013 is a year to look forward to as it will be a year for Marvel
It’s been announced already, it’s coming out in 2014 I think, possibly 2015. The link in this story even says it. To put it the way you did, DUH
I want spidey or wolverine up in that bitch
Captain America 2 would be set in the present time, dummy.
Joss deserves a $20 million bonus for what he gave Marvel and he should be paid at least $25 million to do the sequel. Disney won’t ever be that generous but they really should be.
Did you miss the part where Bucky fell? Winter Soldier, anyone? I hate when non-comic readers act like an authority on the subject because they watched a movie. :s
I was expecting the Avengers to be akin to a Star Wars movie, instead I got the Expendables. I expected better from Whedon and RDJ.
YAYYYYY!!????
The “purple guy” isn’t a DC character. Go read Iron Man #55 and bring an intelligent comment back to this thread, please.
Avengers 3 as well? I’d film them back to back, so we can have Avengers 2 in 2015 and Avengers 3 in 2016.
Captain America 2, post avengers assemble duh…. He’s been frozen for a long time, he’s going to get stuck in some strange situation. He’s a superhero so marvel will make money off him so they will create another film about captain America. Hulk will get a reboot too no doubt.
To the dude who said there should be sequels to all those other movies: let me be your voice of reason. Iron Man(not counting the Hulk movies) was the first superhero movie(pertaining to the Avengers..again, not counting the Hulk movies). And did it do well? Yes. So they created a sequel. AND THEN SUDDENLY: Thor and Captain America movies are being made. They made those movies to lead up to The Avengers. At the time of the Hulk movies and Iron Man 1, The Avengers was thought of, but they didn’t know if it was going to happen. The other movies are not made for sequels. Again, they were lead-ups to The Avengers.
Gee, why the long wait before announcing this? LOL. Seriously, who didn’t see that coming?
No way they could NOT go back to the well with Whedon.
Fan base geeks who really supported this all the way through — and are the audiences who brought in the non-fans — would slay marvel down all over the web otherwise.
And as much as I can take shots at my fellow geeks, even as an indie filmmaker myself, I know how strong we are in the long run.
As in the course of a few years before the movie comes out.
Suits, execs and non geeks alike can b and moan all they want.
And run their power plays…but Whedon’s the man on all this.
And not any goddamn CEO and his board.
NUFF SAID!
Anybody want to take a gander this will be a 2 for 1 (a la Breaking Dawn and Deathly Hallows)? Like filming Avengers 2 and 3 at the same time, release 3 a year after 2?
I’m a dilettante when it comes to comics, and although I did not quite understand what was going on, it was better than most superhero movies in this regard. Great film-making, lots of laughs, never boring. It gets my highest accolade for this genre : The Broken Science Fair Glasses Taped Together at the Bridge Award. Please. Take my slide rule. Just don’t hurt me. But enough about the line at the concession stand.
All of us Edgar Rice Burroughs fan boys are waiting for the big John Carter sequel news. When can we have that good news? We’re boycotting all Disney products until we get the sequel we were promised Andrew Stanton told us he was going to give us a trilogy based on the books that were written 100 years ago. It’s very selfish and stingy of Disney to deny us what we so fervently desire. All they care about is making money it seems. Don’t they know the importance of the Burroughs literary adventures? Stanton gave them a better cinematic world than Whedon did and what do they do? They flush John Carter down the toilet with lousy marketing and spend all their time and money on Avengers. It’s wrong and we are going to make them give us John Carter 2 if it’s the last thing we do.
^L o freaking L. That was hilarious. Almost as hilarious as the Burroughs fanatic writing that Hollywood vs. Mars book under the pen name of Dotar Sojat.
Meanwhile WB is trying to figure out how to do this with the DC Characters – anyone remember that Justice League film they were going to make with a fresh cast?
