The dating reality shows’ hot streak this summer continues with Fox’s The Choice, a six-episode celebrity dating series that feels like a dating version of The Voice or a cross between the NBC singing competition and The Dating Game. Hosted by So You Think You Can Dance‘s Cat Deeley, the hourlong The Choice features eligible celebrities competing to find a match among a group of sexy singles… they can’t see.
The title and setup are a clear take on The Voice — rhymes, get it?. (Choice‘s promo below plays heavily on the similarities.) Filmed in front of a live audience, each episode of The Choice begins with four eligible celebrity bachelors sitting in rotating chairs, turning their backs on the sexy singles looking for a date with them. In this initial “Blind Round,” each celebrity can only use his suitors’ voices – as they share information about their life, passions, turn-ons and turn-offs. When a celebrity bachelor likes what he hears, he pulls his “love handle,” spinning his chair around to bring him face-to-face for the first time with his potential date. If more than one celebrity pulls the handle, they must battle it out until the sexy single chooses a celebrity. Once each bachelor has his three hotties, the teams enter the “Speed Choice” round, where each woman has only 15 seconds to convince her celebrity to pick her for the final round.
In the final, beauty pageant-style round, host Deeley poses a question to each of the team’s final two. The celebrities must choose between each of their two remaining eligible ladies, with the winner whisked away on a dream date. Like with ABC’s The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, The Choice will also do a reverse-gender version. The series is currently shooting with 20 male celebrities set for five for the 5 of the 6 episodes and four female ones tapped for the remaining episode, which will feature hot bachelors vying for a date with them. The Choice, produced by A. Smith & Co. Prods., premieres on June 7 at 9 PM and will be paired with the network’s other dating summer reality show, Take Me Out.
The idea for The Choice was developed internally at Fox by the team of Fox’s president of alternative entertainment Mike Darnell who says he felt there was a hole in the dating reality series genre since the launch of The Bachelor. Darnell said he focused on a studio-based dating show, something that is not currently on the air. He contemplated a reboot of The Dating Game but said he felt the partition element felt very antiquated. After blindfolding contestants also was ruled out as looking silly, he and and his team came up with the spinning chairs, which Darnell said felt modern while still feeding into the concept that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Was the premise influenced by The Voice? “This form is working perfectly for a dating show,” said Darnell, who has a knack for taking a spin on successful formats from competing networks, declining further comment. The Choice is the fourth dating reality show slated to launch this summer along with Take Me Out, NBC’s Ready For Love and CBS’ 3.

Seriously, when is all this over-exposure with the reality shows and dating and music shows going to stop on broadcast TV? This is another failure of a show waiting to happen and now over-exposing Cat Deeley on the network as well. Won’t last past the six shows, if it makes it that far and hoaring out celebs in the process.
let me guess… David Hasselhoff will be a celebrity
Thanks for the warning Nellie. The Choice? I think the choice of most fans will be not to watch this. As if we needed another reality show. Why don’t these networks just issue an official statement which says they have run out of new material & have chosen not to try anymore. This kind of crap is the reason more & more viewers are abandoning network television.
Okay, Jennifer. So what are YOUR great ideas for TV shows?
I’d ask Mike Darnell to turn on an episode or two of the apparently-not-good-enough-dating-show-to-count “Baggage” on GSN, but then he’d just copy it for Fox.
Why do I sense that Hal Sparks will be one of the bachelors? Pass.
Will Silent Bob and Jay show up to wreck the taping?
LOL… been done. Another crappy show being produced by Darnell and his minions. A Smith is the guy that does all those Gordon Ramsey shows. Used to be Rocket Science was MD’s choice of producers. Now he’s turned his attention to another talentless producer who does “hacky” shows.
a shame. Good TV hours being used up.
MD has never relied on amazing producers for his hacky shows. They get ratings, flame out, and then he comes up with another one.
I personally don’t like any of them, but the dude knows how to use the press and get crazy amounts of attention for a short period of time.
other than American Idol MD has ZERO successful reality shows (and please dont mention the gordon ramsey lollapalooza). how he is even in the same position is beyond comprehension. not sure why they dont fire him and finally bring in new blood. how long can someone live off one show?
Does this mean Cat won’t be hosting XFactor as we had hoped.
I keep wondering why someone doesnt bring back the old show TATTLE TALES…either as a weekly show or a daily/weekly syndicated show. It combines the dating genre with the country’s celebrity obsession. You could even update it to include gay couples and live-ins but not married….Youd only need 3 couples per show and I think it would do well. I remember watching it as a kid. Call me Mr Darnell
Hmmm, really putting a lot of stock in those spinning chairs.
This show has Jennifer Love Hewitt written all over it.
Really?! I am kind of sick of all these spinoffs and everything. Let’s be original shall we.
This TV show is just a LEGAL way to pimp out dates to the Celebs. Think about it if the Celeb is attracted to that date he could use it as a one night stand booty call get laid and the girl gets tossed to the side. YES theres a chance a spark could connect but this is just legal prostitution on TV in my eyes. Bring back game shows with morals and not extort women. I saw one ad and the girl was like “I love football and getting dirty” and showed the guy picking her off just saying that. I wonder if that Celeb thinks hes gonna sex is almost implyed from that comment on that date then why did he pick her? It wasn’t the sound of her voice it was what she said. WAKE UP AMERICA WE”RE TURNING BACK IN THE BABEL FROM THE BIBLE. By the way I’m not a bible thumper just an American Soldier with morals.
