UPDATE 6:45 PM: No comedy pilots remain in contention at Fox as the network has passed on Rebounding, El Jefe, Prodigy Bully, Little Brother, Let It Go, Like Father and Living Loaded. Rebounding and El Jefe are being shopped to other networks. On the drama side, the only pilot still alive is the Cuba Gooding Jr legal drama Guilty, which was a strong contender for a series pickup. I hear the network brass decided to take a few weeks before making a decision on it, so we won’t hear right away.

UPDATE 5:30 PM: Here it is — the series pickup of the heavily favored Kevin Williamson drama pilot starring Kevin Bacon, now titled The Following (I hope Fox changes that). Because Bacon committed to only doing 15 episodes a season, the order for the Williamson project will likely be for midseason. The project, from Warner Bros TV, is a thriller about ex-FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Bacon) who leads the search to catch diabolical serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) who has created a cult of serial killers. Marcos Siega directed the pilot, which co-starred Shawn Ashmore, Natalie Zea, Valorie Curry, Jeananne Goossen, Nico Tortorella, Adan Canto, Billy Brown.
UPDATE 5:15 PM: Fox started its new drama series pickups with the Josh Berman/Robert Wright drama starring Jordana Spiro as a young female thoracic surgeon with Bridgeport roots who juggles two worlds as she juggles her career and her lifelong debt to the South Chicago mob. The series, now titled The Mob Doctor, is produced by Sony TV and executive produced by Berman, Wright and Michael Dinner who directed the pilot. The pickup of Mob Doctor assures a continuation of the medical drama genre on Fox whose veteran series House departs this month. I’m still waiting to get confirmation on the Kevin Williamson powerhouse drama pilot, with Guilty also in strong contention.
PREVIOUS 4:30 PM: Fox just kicked off its new series pickup action with three single-camera comedy orders to the Mindy Kaling project, Ned Fox Is My Manny and The Goodwin Games.
The Mindy Kaling single-camera comedy, now titled It’s Messy, was created by and stars The Office standout as a Young Bridget-Jones type doctor trying to navigate both her personal and professional lives. Fox picked up the project in a turnaround when NBC passed on the script, and the pilot has been a favorite of Fox’s brass from the script stage. It is earmarked as a potential companion for the network’s freshman breakout New Girl. Along with Kaling, Serving as an executive producer on the pilot was her Office co-star BJ Novak. The pickup continues Universal TV’s presence on Fox — the studio also produces the network’s departing drama House. However, House was sold by Universal before its merger with NBC, so this marks the first series order for the recently-revamped Universal TV at Fox or any non-NBC network.
Dana Fox’s Ben Fox Is My Manny, now called Ben & Kate, hails from 20th TV and Chernin Entertainment. The pilot, directed by Jake Kasdan, centers on a free spirited guy (Nat Faxon) who, under the guise of being his niece’s nanny, moves in with his type “A,” tightly wound sister (Dakota Johnson) and in the process will help her re-enter the world. Ben & Kate started off slow, taking a while to cast the female lead and then recasting her after the table read. (Abby Elliott was originally set for the part). As a result, the pilot was late, but ever since it was delivered to Fox, it became an instant contender.
The Goodwin Games, from How I Met Your Mother‘s Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris, is also from 20th TV. It is a high-concept family comedy about a father who leaves his fortune to his 3 children only if they agree to his terms. The script clinched a pilot order when Becki Newton committed to star. Her appeal, along with that of Scott Foley, who plays her brother, were key in Fox’s decision to pickup the pilot, directed/exec produced by Peyton Reed, to series.

Goodbye Kelly Kapoor!
Although since her show and The Office come from the same place, she might just slip back to a recurring role…
FOX is surely doing 2 hours of comedy on Tuesdays now, and NBC will likely do the same, except from 9-11 behind The Voice. Question is… does Raising Hope get benched until something fails? I mean, that’s what should happen based on ratings.
8pm hour – “Goodwin Games” and “Ned Fox is My Manny” in that order or the other
9pm – New Girl / Mindy
The only one I’m looking forward to of these pick ups though is “Goodwin Games.” Carter and Craig? Sold. Becki and Scott? Yes please!
Hope this doesn’t mean thats it for the comedy orders… still waiting on word for Mike Royce’s Little Brother.
Ok, now that Kaling is definitely not coming back to The Office, NBC needs to cancel it. Seriously.
Felisha Terrell is smoking hot and super funny…..
Do you work for her or fap to her?
So happy to see Jordana Spiro’s show is picked up!!! I’ve loved her since My Boys days.
Also looking forward to Goodwin Games, Becki Newton is great!
What happened to rebounding?
Mob Doctor sounds like a total rip off of Beat the Reaper
Just so you know Beat the Reaper is in development at HBO by Leonardo Dicaprio production company.
been *picked* up
the mob drama will fail and it just sounds plain stupid… fox should just renew terra nova and place it behind american idol and x factor
Even the writers didn’t want Terra Nova to come back, it was that bad of an experience.
Actually they should of renew The Chicago Code last spring. Instead they’re going to be starting with an even weaker line up. Touch got renewed it’s clear it audience more than likely will not return next season.
“should of”…ALWAYS funny.
unfortunately, it’s everywhere
FOX has too many flops to replace and not many decent pilots, so they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel. Only Mastermind sounds good. Better luck in 2013-14, FOX.
No horse in this race, but I thought the Rebounding script was really special. Wonder if that’s moving forward.
I’m happy to see THEE GOODWIN GAMES go forward, and I have some interest in IT’S MESSY and THE FOLLOWING with Kevin Bacon. But overall, I’m just not excited with FOX’s development prospects, unlike last year when TERRA NOVA, X FACTOR and ALCATRAZ had me jonesing for the fall.
So happy for Mindy she deserves to have her own show. She should have left the Office a year ago. Now she gets to shine as the star and creator.
Just how she wants it… all about me.
Seriously, even for Hollywood she’s quite the narcissist.
Shocked ‘Touch’ is getting the nod over Usher or Asset…
Hopefully Fox still has a few more cards up their sleeve…
Bring on Kevin Bacon vs. James Purefoy, this is gonna be good.
If I’m doing the math correctly, that leaves one more Comedy slot open at FOX w/ 4 pilots competing? Come on PRODIGY/BULLY!
Yep, would have loved to see Prodigy Bully.
I heard the cast of Untitled Karyn Usher was fantastic. That’s a Fox Alias procedural. Why see so many dark bad guys on the network.
Kevin Reilly what are you thinking?
I don’t think they are done yet. I imagine at least one of Usher or The Asset will get a pick up. Maybe both. There is room for both. Count me among the believers for Mob Doc. I loved the script and think it has a great chance of succeeding. Also think Goodwin Games is an interesting concept, with a great cast. However, I really did not get the Mindy Kaling script or Ben Fox. I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but my expectations are low.
they passed on Julian McMahon and Anfela Bassett that is so crazy. They should take that to another place.
They are picking up shows that are about bad guys and the Mob. This show was like Hannah and that was very cool with Cate Blanchett. What are they thinking?
Guilty is my choice and the best choice for a final pick up.
Nellie, word on LIKE FATHER, LIVING LOADED, and LET IT GO? Those are comedy pilots as well.
Man, I was hoping Let it Go, Rebounding, and Like Father would make it on the Fox Schedule. I guess they just weren’t any good which sucks since they starred three of my favorite actors in Zachary Levi, Will Forte, and Colin Ferguson.
Next pilot season.
What happened to Bill Lawrence’s “Like Father”? Was that at FOX or am I mis-remembering?
i wonder if the Mob Doctor is actually going to shoot in Bridgeport and if they are going to show it as it is today, a total yuppie condo nightmare.
Guilty should be a no brainer! Cuba Gooding Jr is the man! He’s what Fox needs…along with Kevin Bacon! true star power
Just so Happy The Goodwin Games got picked up! Love the concept,3 sibling’s competing for their late father’s million’s! and sound’s totally enjoyable. Good Win for the Goodwin’s! Congrat’s!
Doesn’t this give FOX surprisingly few shows to replace early cancellations/misfires?
My guess, for purposes of placing shows:
Bones/Mob Doctor
Ned Fox/Raising Hope/New Girl/Mindy Kaling
X-Factor/Glee
X-Factor/Touch
Kitchen Nightmares/Fringe
Animation Domination
All they have on the bench is Mastermind & Goodwin Games? And Fringe is only for 13 episodes!!!
They’ve got to pickup at least one more drama, if not two, for the inevitable that an hour somewhere bombs.
