Los Angeles (May 31, 2012) __ Twentieth Century Fox announced today some major additions to its 2013-14 release slate, along with some date changes.
On the heels of the $344 million worldwide success of TITANIC 3D, the studio and director Roland Emmerich, in conjunction with Stereo 3D, which did the work on TITANIC, will produce a top quality 3D version of the iconic INDEPENDENCE DAY. ID43D will be released worldwide on July 3, 2013.
The studio also staked its 2014 summer with three giant tentpoles. First up, Fox, together with Disney and Dreamworks, has shifted the release of Steven Spielberg’s epic ROBOPOCALYPSE to go worldwide on April 25, 2014, the same weekend that “Avengers” was released internationally this year. Disney distributes domestically. (ID43D now occupies its former release date.)
Then on Memorial Day (May 23, 2014), Fox unleashes DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES worldwide, the sequel to the $483 million grossing RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Rupert Wyatt, who helmed the 2011 smash, returns to direct. The returning producers are Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
And on July 18, 2014, Fox releases worldwide the third of its summer tentpoles, the currently untitled X-MEN, to be directed by Matthew Vaughn.
Fox also announced its Christmas 2013 line-up, with THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, starring Ben Stiller and Kristin Wiig, and directed by Ben Stiller, set for Christmas Day. Samuel Goldwyn, John Goldwyn, Stuart Cornfeld and Ben Stiller produce the film.
Also for Christmas, the studio will shift WALKING WITH DINOSAURS from October 11 to December 20, 2013. The film is based on the massively successful TV series and live show, which has grossed more than $250 million in box office worldwide.
Other 2013 dates include the following: PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS, based on Rick Riordan’s publishing phenomenon, goes out August 16, 2013, moving from March 15. And Fox earlier announced that Beyoncé Knowles would headline the voice cast of EPIC, in theaters May 24, 2013, from the makers of “Ice Age” and “Rio.” The film was previously known as “Leafmen.” Also joining the cast are Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Knoxville, Aziz Ansari, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Blake Anderson and Judah Friedlander. Lastly, an as-yet-untitled comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, directed by Paul Feig (BRIDESMAIDS) will land in theaters April 5, 2013.

That is a pretty huge year! Fox has some solid broad audience franchises. Impressive.
Looks like ID4 is only looking to take a little of the thunder away from Pacific Rim. The movies have similar storylines and open on the same weekend. Does seem kind of ridiculous to simply re-release movies though in light of the flop that was Star Wars I. I am much more impressed by studios that takes risks (Best Marigold) and serve a fresh meal as opposed to leftovers on holidays.
Cant wait for Planet of the Apes! The last one was amazing.
Question – when folks sit down and make a list of truly “iconic” movies, does anybody really have Independence Day high on the list other than Roland?
Yes, it’s a great and fun movie. Maybe you need to see Battleship and compare movies
ID4 is as dumb as a bag of hammers inside another bag of hammers. It caught the zeitgeist, and rode it to big numbers, but now it plays like a parody of itself. Dogs outrunning explosions and all that other nonsense.
Have to agree with Apoc. The movie was pretty stupid.
When it came out everyone was excited to see the White House and NYC/LA explode as you couldn’t really do that beforehand. But now we’ve seen it. It was cool, but not enough to fork over 15 bucks at the movie theater again. That’s just insane.
ID4 is NOT Titanic. It will make little to no money, and might even cost them if they promote heavily.
Can’t wait for DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. I was shocked at how much I LOVED the first one.
They seem to have a great slate coming up.
There’s a schedule that reeks of quality.
ID4 is an awful film and its taking Robopocalypse’s slot is downright shameful.
Warner bros would be stupid to not take this oppurtunoty to move Pacific Rim to 4th of July weekend!
There was a time when Hollywood was run by grownups. But, it has long-since fallen into the clutches of a bunch of arrested adolesents. Witness the titles above.
Welcome to Earth!
That’s ERF to you!
The two big EPIC fails here are that they renamed “Leafmen”, which wasn’t great a great title to start with (based on an excellent William Joyce picture book), into a new one word title. Unfortunately, they have chosen one of the most overused and semi-irrelevant words in today’s English language.
And then they are letting Ben Stiller star and direct “THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY” – Sure, let him direct, but PLEASE find someone else to star in it. Maybe his good buddy, and good luck charm, Owen Wilson… He’d make a ten times better Walter Mitty, than Stiller…
Oh, well – at least that means someone will release the original again on DVD & Blueray.
Otherwise, the rest of their releases look promising.
So “Jurassic Park” 3D and “ID4-3D” are going to be released on the same day? I know I am alone in think this but “ID4″ sucked in 2d. It was so bad I thought it was a Michael Bay Film.
It’s bad news for filmmakers when studios prefer to spend just a couple of million an 3D-ise an old flick to fill their release quota, rather than make their new and original sequels and reboots.
Fox has to go huge with X-Men–Avengers has set the bar high but X-Men has great actors tied to it and a vast, loyal fanbase.
No mention of “The Wolverine?”
X-Men doesn’t have the wide appeal of the Avengers. It will never generate as much money, no matter how much they throw at it.
Not saying I don’t like it — but every one of those films has a ceiling of $150-$200 million for the most part. It’s unrealistic to expect a new installment to do more.
“The Wolverine” has already been dated for July 26, 2013. Unless Fox has to move it for some odd reason.
Where is the sequel to Independence Day? It’s long overdue.
Probably cancelled after the snore fest that is the Titanic did so well. Why spend 200 million making an original movie, when you can spend 20 million turning a old movie into 3D an make 200 million at the box office.
So, in other words, a carbon copy of previous years? How exciting.
Still literally nothing come out for Fantastic Four and Daredevil for the forseeable future.
Disney/Marvel it’s time to get your characters back. Fox is not doing anything with them. There is no Fantastic Four or Daredevil reboot coming. Fox is hogging the rights with no results. The last Daredevil movie came out in 2003, that was NINE YEARS AGO. Elektra came out in 2005. Over 7 years ago. It’s time to act.
ID4 is classic for ’90s kids. Here’s hoping Fox reworks the original trailers which used Hans Zimmer’s CRIMSON TIDE theme to lift the roof off. Those trailers had a huge impact and were marvelous.
ID4 will be a helluva lot more entertaining in 3D than Phantom Menace was. Yes it’s still a film that I like to watch every now & then. Also looking forward to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes & the new X Men.
2014? damn, i was hoping we’d get at least one of those sequels [Apes/Xmen] next year.
Seriously, why would any audience in 2014 want to watch a 1996 film that really hasn’t aged well?
