EXCLUSIVE: We’ve learned that singer/songwriter/actress Demi Lovato‘s deal was done late last night. So Fox will introduce her and already locked-in Britney Spears as its new judges for Simon Cowell’s fall talent show The X Factor
at today’s upfront in NYC. (UPDATE: The pair were announced and came onstage. Read our story here.) Unlike last year when the network went along with Cowell’s low-profile judges’ choices (after chaotic early months of on-again/off-again choices), this fall the show is stressing its celebrity quotient in an unabashed bid to grab younger demographics. Both Lovato and Spears received their starts as cogs in the wheel of the Disney star machine, with Lovato a star of the Disney Channel series Sunny With A Chance and in the Camp Rock movies.
Spears was first to close her deal in April to join Cowell on the judging panel in Season 2 following a month of talks. Deadlline was first to report that the pop star received a $10 million offer to join Fox’s singing competition and finally signed up for even more than that — closer to $15 million. That means Spears exceeded the $12 million which Jennifer Lopez received on American Idol last season. Cowell and Fox had focused on getting Spears on board before moving to fill the other vacant judge chair on the show. The names most mentioned for that spot were Lovato and Miley Cyrus, another Disney star. An insider told Deadline that Cyrus decided she didn’t want the gig so a full-court press ensued to get Lovato’s deal done over the weekend. The recruitment of both singers now successfully replaces first-season X Factor judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. Cowell has been mum about his courtship of Lovato but effusive in his public praise for Spears who was the bigger ‘get’ for his show: “I’m fascinated by Britney,” he said during a radio interview with Billy Bush in February. “The fact that she’s one of the most talked about — not just pop stars but people — in the world today, means that you’ve got this star power. This girl has resilience. I would think that if she’s managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, [X Factor would be] a walk in the park. I would be fascinated to hear what she has to say. She’s still hot, she’s still having hit records and she’s still controversial. There’s a reason for that.”

LOVE Britney! Amazing choice and a game changer for the entire reality series business! Wow
After dumping the C Lister that is Nicole Sherzinger and Paula Abdul (who very much lacked chemistry with Simon regardless of what people want to tell you) they go out an get big named A Lister Britney Spears and…um…Demi Lovato?
You’re kidding me. Demi Lovato. Sure the tweens like her but that’s not enough because she could actually use the industry advice rather than give it. She’s barely an up and comer rather than someone who has the x-factor themselves.
Side by side with the rest of the judging panel she does not belong there. Big mistake Cowell. Again. I hope at least Demi can be real and give genuine feedback since Nicole was inept to do so.
I just don’t understand where Cowell is getting these ideas from. I’ll say it…he should’ve tried to get Cheryl Cole to come back.
Ok, this is bad. I’m doing some research on Lovato. She’s starting work on her 4th album and none of her previous efforts have gone platinum. She does have one album certified Gold which is good but her most recent album released last year has only sold 300,000 copies in total.
She’s going to give advice to others?
Sorry but I’m missing the appeal here. It’s not as if she’s some tween mega-seller because even if everyone who bought her albums tuned in it would less than 1/2 of a ratings point.
Britney’s first week sales outpace Demi’s full total sales. Demi is out of her league here. sorry.
Britney Spears is a huge get! But it’s all negated by including Demi Levato. I think she only has one top 10 single to her name. How can she be taken seriously as a judge, when she’s known more for singing back-up to the Jonas Brothers and for her rehab. I don’t understand this decision.
Looking forward to this. I’m a big fan of Britney Spears and have already scored tickets to the live auditions next month. Demi is an ok choice as well, though I would have preferred someone with more experience.
They should get a show where no-talent Tv execs can become rich and famous if they are dumber and a bigger ass***e than the next guy.
You’ll be surprised at how much she knows. She is very talented ,became a fan last year.she is a tuff girl and I would watch the show before I judge anyone,we don’t know what could happen.
Although Britney can’t sing but she’s at least an actual STAR. Who’s that Demi kid? They couldn’t get Fergie, Mariah or Janet for that last spot? Calling it right now, Demi will be replaced after this season is over. She won’t last.
Simon has fallen into the trap thinking these shows are about the judges. The judges are like stars who can open a film, but if the film is weak the audience fades quickly.
The Voice is already becoming weaker. Now, they are using the swivel chairs even more.
Folks, it isn’t the chairs or the judges. It is about the talent, their stories, their development and the production.
Folks will tune into the premiere for Britney Badger.
Smart move on FOX’s part to limit the auditions to five cities. Now if they can cut down Boot Camp/Judge’s Houses they will be in good shape.
Demi Lovato? are you kidding me ? She a not talent and she needs help herself.
Who’s is going to HOST? The last guy sucked!!!
New host rumored to be Joe Jonas. Cowell eyeing Phineas and Ferb to co-host with him
Don’t knock Demi till you see her actually judge. I think she has a lot of knowledge in the industry that she can impart on both young and old contestants.
Whats Spears going to judge, the lip syncing part of the show?
Desperation move by Cowell. These two are not Howard Stern.
15 mill for Britney? To talk? Wait, I am laughing so hard my stomach hurts.
I like the britney move, although i believe demi will backfire greatly, yes she is a bit taleted but how can you have an inexperienced teen pop star mentoring a group of raw individuals who need the proper guidance as winning would be life changing for them, its just too much at stake to put in such inexperienced hands, hey i hope im wrong, if it works out well then as a fan of the show i would be delighted, but i just dont see it…………
You’re spot on in your assessment. Lovato hasn’t figured out how to make herself into a star and get her songs to the top the charts. The most recent album isn’t even going to be certified gold. Not to mention that Lovato has had personal difficulties dealing with the demands/constraints/pressures/etc. of such a career I don’t know if it’s wise to push someone so young into a sometimes harsh spotlight.
The majority of viewers won’t have a clue who she is and I fear that any defiance or outspokeness will come off as immature and bratty.
Did we learn nothing from Debbie Matentnopoulus on The View?!
Lance Bass should host!
I don’t question Demis talent but this, seriously?
demi lovato is such a whiner blaming complainer. hasn’t her whole career for the last 2 yrs been about how her mental problems are manifested through drugs, cutting, bulima? bad bad choice, unless she can bring the right amount of crazy.
and really, how can britney spears be a judge when she is not even competent to testify in court or sit for a depo?
No! I think that having Demi on the show is a brilliant idea, she knows a lot for someone her age and does just as well as others! She would be a brilliant mentor! Don’t just judge her because of her illness? She’s a good singer!
