EXCLUSIVE: The sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation was supposed to come out
this summer on June 29th. But I’ve learned that Paramount is moving the movie nine months to March 29, 2013, to add 3D. “We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally,” one of the studio execs just told me. “Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post — and look how well that movie turned out.” Hollywood is shocked that Paramount vacated the primo date, especially because Paramount blew a wad on a Super Bowl commercial and already was starting TV and outdoor ads for GI Joe 2. Paramount has had luck delaying films before: its decision to move Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island gave the director his biggest box office hit ever. And right now, 3D is huge internationally, with Russia and China building new 3D theaters by the week. Also the execs say that the blockbuster performance of The Hunger Games shows that March can be a prime time of the year to release movies. Of course, Paramount had to talk its partners on GI Joe 2 into the extra nine months of carrying costs – MGM, which has 25%, and David Ellison’s Skydance, which has another 25%. The $125M-budgeted actioner stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and Bruce Willis and is directed by Jon Chu.

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was so looking forward to this next month. Now I have to wait til next year. Grrr. 3D blows…
Don’t feel like reading all 50+ comments, but am I the only one thinking they did this after seeing a cut of the movie and it sucked? Realizing Americans wouldn’t watch they’re trying to appeal to a foreign audience to recoup money. Look at Battleship. Tons of money oversees but nothing here in North America because the movie blows.
One site is reporting that the last focus group was asked, “Would you like to see more of Channing Tatum?” I think the 3D conversion is an excuse to do reshoots for a movie that’s testing badly. Maybe Channing’s sudden surge in popularity is going to rescue their sinking ship. We’ll know for sure if the new movie posters feature Tatum.
Are you kidding me?! The first one sucked so bad it almost tore my clothes off. I honestly forgot everything about the movie before I reached the parking lot.
And this? The sequel looks equally terrible. And I loved GI Joe toys and cartoons when I was a kid.
Nobody dumps that much P&A down the drain 5 weeks from opening weekend. Nobody. Their BS excuse about Titanic doing well in 3D, c’mon. Sorry, guys, but Titanic this movie ain’t. I can a hear a bomb ticking…
And all they did was reset the timer.
Really? You were that looking forward to this?
Yeah, this is code for “Somethings horribly wrong with this picture and we need more time to fix it”.
Thank you – Someone who knows what they’re talking about…
It must be an even bigger trainwreck than expected. 1st Q is a dumping ground for bad movies; Lionsgate may have inverted that trend with the giant HUNGER GAMES but there’s no comparison.
Terrible material, pure cheese, and an overmatched director FTW.
I am mad, really mad. Ok, not really, was really wanting to watch this movie next month, now it will be on when my favorite book’s movie is coming out. Which movie do you think I will watch now, not this one, someone out there better be listening to us, I think you pissed off alot of Americans by wanting more money overseas.
I actually think that’s a smart move. This summer is feeling crowded. 3D really does have an impact globally.
I think it’s one of the idiotic decision in movie history, if they wanted the film to have less competition, why not just delay it until early September? there’s practically no competition then, I could see it thriving extremely well then. But this boneheaded decision is only going to encourage people to pirate the film in protest, and I can hardly blame them.
I started a petition for Paramount to cancel it’s conversion and release the film on time. Not sure if it will be very succesful, but hey you never know unless you try right? G.I. Joe fans please sign here: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-paramount-from-delaying-and-converting-g-i-joe-re.html
P.S. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if this film gets leaked early like X-Men Origins Wolverine did, if it does get leaked and my petition dosen’t work out, then I shall watch the film online in protest, not the best way to watch a movie, but it still beats crappy post-conversion 3-D ANY day of the week.
Really? You started a petition? Two thumbs up to the man with the plan to save the world by bringing G.I. Joe to theatres this summer instead of next….
Hope that’s not your real name in your signature. Otherwise posting that last paragraph on Deadline = not smart.
I think it goes to show just how much 3D nowadays plays into more money or not at the box office come opening day.But honestly,I don’t know if I am more pissed off that they moved it to 2013,or the fact that it’s being converted into 3D.In either case,I’m not going to go see it.It’s a shame that hollywood wants to bombard us moviegoers with a format that’s not really impressive.(Note To Hollywood-The 3D only works for a movie with a lot of visuals, like Tron:Legacy).
I signed against this terrible planning by Paramount.
Yeah but we needed at least one action movie that didn’t have aliens in it.
Very smart choice. Paramount tends to be bold with these kinds of moves.
Didn’t they do that with Mission Impossible 4 as well?
no. no they didnt. it came out in December and in 2D. and that did awesome at the box office.
Everyone is running from the avengers
AVENGERS would not be relevant on 6/29, so no.
Avengers is always relevant, blasphemer.
Not when it won’t even be OUT when this movie was originally scheduled to open, duh.
Nah, last weekend was the final weekend Avengers will spend at #1. By June 29th, it won’t be a factor.
True. Did they think it would get pounded by Spiderman? I mean it will be clear of Avengers and have a few weeks to make money before the Dark Knight. It’s not like they could have been expecting legs?
Very strange.
Well that is super disappointing. I was looking forward to it this summer in regularD :/ which is how I will be seeing it anyway I guess come next March…
Hilarious and dumb of Paramount to do this before the films release especially when the movie is ready to be seen. This will bite them in the ass just wait. Mess around with the audience saying its coming this summer with trailers and tv spots only to delay it till next year to add 3D. Very very dumb
Something must be very, very wrong. Can’t remember a movie a month out–after an extensive marketing campaign has already begun — move so suddenly and during the Summer! Are they really that scared of A-MEH-ZING SPIDER-MAN? Could it be the first ever movie that had a Superbowl spot in 2 separate Super Bowls?
Nothing at all to do with Spiderman but all to do with Magic Mike me thinks – they would have played on the same day.
Also, not sure March 2013 is a good month either as Oz: The Great and The Powerful would probably eat-up that month. Really, praying it’s excellent.
Mmmmmmmmm still GI Joe, all that marketing – very very late in the day to pull it out, at least now Channing Tatum can join in the promotional fun.
Magic Mike will be a flop.
You keep telling yourself that.
NNNNNNOOOOOO way, that’s going to happen. How much did The Vow make.
Magic Mike will be a sure fire Hit for sure.
It’s a pretty cheap movie and thus should be able to clear profitability via attendance from Channing fans alone. Rentals/VOD should be pure profit.
yeah, to me this sounds really wierd. It feels like they know the movie is really bad and just because it is big and expensive there is no guarantee that it will make money. Look at Battleship. So instead of opening to 25 million and then doing a little bit overseas and losing money for the studio they are pushing it to next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they roll out international first, in 3-D, to make at least some of their money back before they dump it here. Sounds like it is a real turkey to me. Or at least Paramounts actions seem to be signaling that.
Saw the movie at a special screening a few weeks back, movie was way better then 1st. Rock, rocks!
Go Joe!
Your Paramount check is in the mail.
They did the same with Star Trek, and that also seemed to work out well for them.
Could be a smart move. Paramount probably doesn’t want it to get bludgeoned by Spider-Man a week later and Dark Knight after that, although this is pretty odd seeing as we’re only ONE MONTH out before the original release date.
I was just going to say the same thing about moving it away from The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises, but March of next year? Why not around the Thanksgiving/Xmas holidays?
I also think the reason why paramount delayed this is because they are not taking chances at opening another Hasbro movie against a superhero. Remember Battleship vs Avengers? How well did that work out?
You mean what happened 6 days ago?
Exactly. Battleship bombed and since Hasbro was involved, paramount must have been a bit nervous, considering all the competition. A more sensible move would be to delay it to labor day.
Who did the photoshop job on that poster? Please tell me that’s not the official one-sheet…
Yep…
What a shitty, shitty poster.
Im glad someone moved it made no sense to have two Channing tatum movies opening on the same day. Now if only people like us can move to later in the summer
Two Channing Tatum movies? Let’s look at this. One: he’s barely in G.I. Joe, only for the first 2 minutes. Two: Magic Mike is a movie about male strippers, it’s for a female audience, while G.I. Joe is for a male audience. Three: Oh, yeah. To reiterate – Channing Tatum really isn’t in G.I. Joe, so it doesn’t matter.
Non-industry insiders don’t know that.
I have to disagree…
One: Channing Tatum might barely be in this new version of GI Joe but I think, that’s one of the reasons for this delay. To ensure, that he has more screen time.
Especially, because of the internet reaction regarding is Duke dead? If you view the trailer comments and generally google information, that’s one of the most asked questions.
Basically, whether you loved him in the first movie or not. There is a demand to see him in this new one, and his getting even more popular with each movie – better the devil you know.
Two: Yes, Magic Mike is initially for the female audience and gays (remember them, who are male) but there is nothing wrong with straight males watching this movie too, to learn some tips. Hell, they might just get pushed into going with their girlfriends anyway.
Also, even though GI Joe would be considered male audience, some females like to watch it too. I bet the tracking on the box office was just bigger or may be a problem with GI Joe itself and they just needed this extra time to fix it better.
Three: Channing Tatum does matter in GI Joe. I’ve noticed that the IMDb poster now shows his face and the new poster stating the new changes to the date, now has his name first as the lead with support name check from The Rock and badass Bruce.
Hmmm, Could it be they are going to let him live now and reshoot some scenes? Is that even possible? I actually liked the last one, especially the red head
Yes Yes Yes, that’s exactly what will have to happen = he will live and get more screen time as the lead.
I mean look at the madness of this current scenario – it’s insane and has made everyone involved looked extremely stupid and expensive.
The March date will not work either, as there are stronger movies coming up plus crowded and at this point will we even care by then.
MMmmmmmmm, I don’t know what conversations they had with Channing Tatum but if he didn’t want to be involved, he shouldn’t have come back at all(somehow his contract should have be terminated and go for 100% reboot), but the fact that he came back just to be killed off, obviously f***ed off a lot of the GI Joe fans (Duke is an important character) that actually liked him.
Yeah, the red head (Scarlett) belongs in the movie with Snake Eyes as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marlon Wayans.
It’s kind of shocking that they didn’t think The Rock or badass Bruce could secure this movie to box office success this year though. Basically, something bigger is going on then 3D. It better be worth it in the end.
I don’t get it. They have a barely-there release schedule for 2011. “The Dictator” is their only tent pole?
They are releasing Madagascar 3 for DreamWorks. Still, Paramount is pretty thin this year.
And now they’re loaded for 2013. With GIJoe, Star Trek 2, World War Z, TMNT(2013) and Anchorman 2. GI Joe won’t interfere with Paramount’s other 2013 releases but I wonder if they stick with the mega-movie lineup or if they bump one to 2014… hope not!
Who moves their summer tentpole A MONTH before it is suppose to launch TO THE NEXT YEAR?! I smell fear… 3D is a poor excuse.
Hunger Games wasn’t in 3D and it would have done well at the box office no matter which time of year because the BUILT-IN FAN BASE would have gone no matter what.
GI Joe 2 will get hurt by probable negative reviews!
True, I wonder how other movies with the buit-in-fanbase would have done had they owned March like Hunger Games. Maybe it’s the skew towards teens and women that allowed it to dominate during a month that it didn’t have to compete (too hard) for screens.
GI Joe could do well in March though. We’ll have to see.
Bad move, Paramount! What could have been a nice summer surprise will most surely turn into a spring stinker! I mean, you don’t postpone such a high-profile movie like this a month from its release date! Surely this will end being 2013′s “Wrath of the Titans,” a mediocre sequel to a movie that nobody wanted a sequel to.
We’re going to move our toy movie to next year and add aliens, because ET was an alien and that did very well.
3d really. It only improves box offices because they charge you more to watch it. I only watch the 2d versions as the 3d conversion offers nothing else. What a joke. Hope everyone ignores it till the bluray release
I’m sensing CGI-overload this summer. I think the verdict this summer is if you aren’t Avengers or Dark Knight, you’re better off going against weaker competition. It worked for Green Hornet.
That is also the time of next years Wrestlemania event in New York and Rock is scheduled to wrestle again next year, so it will give Paramount some free cross-promotion with WWE.
If the WWE was good cross promotion, than John Cena’s movies wouldn’t have been bombs. Sorry, but I don’t see Paramount giving a damn about Wrestlemania.
Well, at least they’ve avoided the bone-headed mistake of releasing two Channing Tatum movies on the same day (although G.I. Joe isn’t really a Channing Tatum movie). Were they nervous because Magic Mike was tracking better than G.I. Joe?
Worked well for john carter
So this must be a pretty epic disaster to be pushed back after a marketing campaign began months ago, two trailers, tons of promotional material in theaters and TV spots already airing. It seems disingenuous to say it’s because of some newfound realization that 3D gets you a foreign bump; everyone knew that long before the movie went into production, so what you’re really saying is the movie is horrible, it couldn’t hurt to have nine months to do some reshoots and might as well throw some 3D on it to squeeze as much money out of this catastrophe’s opening weekend.
I don’t buy the studio’s spin on this at all. There’s literally nothing positive to say about this move.
Other than they were going to get clobbered and think they have a puncher chance at a later date.
I agree with this comment whole heartedly. Saying you want to do a 3D conversion this late in the game just doesn’t make sense. Back in 2010 when studios realized how much more 3D could add to grosses, Warner’s managed to do a 3D conversion on Clash and still release it on time. I think it’s no coincidence that this decision was made days after ‘Battleship’ bombed.
I agree. I think GI Joe would have suffered from the negative response to Battleship as well as having to directly compete with Amazing Spiderman. The amount of time it was pushed back will allow it to recover from the rescheduling and if it is good it will succeed in March.
The thing is, March 2013 is already ridiculously crowded (Oz, Elysium, Percy Jackson, The Host, Jack the Giant Killer)… so Paramount has its work cut out.
Oops. We will announce in January that we are pushing it back further to June then to August then to October then to January 2014. We’re always thinking here at Paramountain Pictures.
