EXCLUSIVE: The sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation was supposed to come out
this summer on June 29th. But I’ve learned that Paramount is moving the movie nine months to March 29, 2013, to add 3D. “We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally,” one of the studio execs just told me. “Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post — and look how well that movie turned out.” Hollywood is shocked that Paramount vacated the primo date, especially because Paramount blew a wad on a Super Bowl commercial and already was starting TV and outdoor ads for GI Joe 2. Paramount has had luck delaying films before: its decision to move Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island gave the director his biggest box office hit ever. And right now, 3D is huge internationally, with Russia and China building new 3D theaters by the week. Also the execs say that the blockbuster performance of The Hunger Games shows that March can be a prime time of the year to release movies. Of course, Paramount had to talk its partners on GI Joe 2 into the extra nine months of carrying costs – MGM, which has 25%, and David Ellison’s Skydance, which has another 25%. The $125M-budgeted actioner stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and Bruce Willis and is directed by Jon Chu.

The move doesn’t make any sense. Isn’t it standard nowadays for big block busters to open with 3D anyway? As for the person who made the comment about People Like Us, it’s more like an early fall movie, instead of a summer movie. Let’s hope Pine’s charisma can earn him some box office points.
@MattR They didn’t do the same thing with Star Trek. They change the release day 6 months in advance. This is 4 weeks from hitting theaters. Big difference.
Let’s talk about something way more worthwhile, Elysium in March!
Yes, yes…to add 3D.
I’m sure this has nothing to do with the test screenings that occurred a little while ago.
The test cards probably came back torn in two.
Everyone knows that the movie is a mess and that Paramount’s entire Summer is a wreck. Who actually believes the Melrose spin these days?
Channing Tatum is in this film for just a few scenes.
Smart move, glad to see the Chinese and Russians embrace the wonderful experience of 3d, it will ensure a steady flow of new 3d content for intellectually superior Americans such as myself who love the level of immersion 3d offers. I say screw the purists who think there precious art is being ruined by 3d. I say it is evolution they say it causes them headaches because they are so weak minded and hate having to pay more and wear glasses.
I heard the reshoots they did last week were so-so…and they’re scared off of the Magic Mike
tracking…why have a gi joe Channing Tatum when you can have a stripping Channing Tatum?
Good point.
They are running scared of Simon West epic EXPENDABLES 2 which is THE ensemble blockbuster of the summer. They must hide in the dark for a year now
guys lets be honest… this sounds like the ship has already sunk and the patch work has begun. I just entered three contests to attend the world premiere of this film!!! I cannot think of a film this big ever getting pulled this late into the marketing game.
Way to go Paramount. Your screwing people over. Plus do you realize you killed all hope of it succeeding?
This is the last straw. When will studios realize WE DONT WANT 3D!!!! EVERYONE I know (movie addicts and regular movie goers) avoids 3D like the plague. Heres a little inside tip for the studio executives – The only reason 3D does so well is BECAUSE WE HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO WATCH THE DAMN THING IN 3D! Do you realize how hard it is to find a 2D showing nowadays? Most people don’t want to drive around finding a 2D showing so they just lay down the extra dough for the ridiculous gimmick. This is absolutely insane. Just when you think the 3D phase is staring to die, they go an pull a completely asinine move like this. F*** you studio executives, F*** you.
No big deal i’m not a fan
this is stupid they`ve been promoting this for months and now they want to pull out till next year? so what will they do next show a starving man a steak then throw it off a cliff and tell him he has to crawl down and get it. i some times wonder if if there may have been some political influance due to it being an election year because 3d has been popping back up in theatres for the past several years so it couldn`t popped in there head.
Dafuq did I just read ? This is bullshit. However it’s a smart move considering its going to rake more money.
It’s always crowded. I hope they don’t bother moving the movie to May, bacause given a choice between Star Trek and Joe, I going to choose Star Trek.
There’s no way you move a heavily advertised summer movie A MONTH AWAY FROM ITS RELEASE unless there is something seriously wrong with it. 3-D is just the excuse, quite obviously…
I can’t even think of a comparable situation…it’s crazy. Not a month away from its intended release date.
I find it curious that they chose a date on which Wrath of the Titans flopped this year.
Battleship and Avengers opened internationally in April to take advantage of European holidays. Maybe GI Joe want’s to do the same.
I’m 100% in favor of spreading good movies throughout the year. I like going to movies and I always find the pickings slim between January and May.
I think The wizard of Oz prequal will be the most anticipated prequal worldwide since Star wars episode 1. Tne only reason these other studios don’t see it that way yet is due to the fact that no marketing materials have been released for it yet. but beleive me, it will be HUGE.
Agreed 100%. No studio is showing this movie any respect but they soon will. I think it’s going to be HUGH too.
I’m calling it NOW, some other movies within the month of March will have to shift fast to make way for OZ once the first trailer comes out, so it rules in March, including another new date for GI Joe.
Good move. The film would do a so-so Battleship type of opening and then be totally forgotten the next week when Spider-man is released. G.I. Joe 2 is an August type release at best, more suited for late March, people will be desperate for entertainment about that time.
He’s referencing Hunger Games but I think he’s really looking at Wrath of the Titans – sequel to a movie that nobody liked, BUT if its big, dumb CGI action with 3D, audiences will flock to that shit in Russia and Asia for whatever reason. Wrath did 82 mil us but 218 foreign and still going. Same deal with John Carter, 200 mil foreign (biggest movie of the year so far in Russia).
If a movie is gonna suck without 3D, it’s gonna suck even Harder with 3D!
Bad tracking numbers? Low awareness? I’m guessing the epic failure of similar military toy derived BATTLESHIP really had Paramount second guessing themselves. A sequel to a movie no one really LOVED? If ever there was an opportunity to do a subtle reboot (the two HULK movies as an example), this was it. Not to mention red-hot star of the moment Channing Tatum takes a severe back seat in this one. Maybe they’ll try to squeeze in some reshoots to maximize their Channage.
I was looking forward to this. Audiences know when they’re being sold a load of crap, and they’re going to smell the desperation on this move.
Audiences DID know they were being sold a load of crap. That’s why Paramount is offloading this stinker next year instead of bombing in the heydey of summer.
Even though many summers are crowded with movie premieres.
This makes me mad. I was really looking forward to this one. Now we have to wait a year. What is wrong with Paramount?!
