(WASHINGTON, D.C. — May 21, 2012) Geoff Daniels has been elevated to executive vice president and general manager of Nat Geo WILD, as announced today by David Lyle, chief executive officer, National Geographic Channels US and Global Programming, and Howard T. Owens, president of National Geographic Channels US, to whom Daniels will report. Daniels had served as senior vice president of the network and led its launch in March 2010.
Over the past two years, Daniels has overseen commissioning of more than 150 hours of original series, specials and events for broadcast on WILD globally, furthering the network’s commitment to provide extraordinary wildlife programming that inspires people to care about the planet. Under Daniels’ leadership, Nat Geo WILD has been one of TV’s fastest growing networks, driven by the success of Big Cat Week, breakout series such as The Incredible Doctor Pol and Cesar Millan’s The Dog Whisperer.
Nat Geo WILD is currently available in 56 million U.S. homes, and globally available in more than 100 million homes in 90 countries and 28 languages. The U.S. network is up 33 percent in primetime with total viewers, and up 42 percent in the key demographic of persons 25 to 54. WILD is also the number four co-viewing network — ahead of all its nonfiction competitors — and is strongly competing with larger, more established networks.
“Geoff has done an excellent job of growing Nat Geo WILD since its launch, and establishing the network’s distinct, vibrant personality in wildlife programming, which viewers have embraced,” said Lyle. “This announcement recognizes the leadership and talent he is bringing to the network.”
Before assuming his role with Nat Geo WILD, Daniels was senior vice president of development and production for National Geographic Channels International (NGCI), and produced nearly 400 hours of factual programming across the network’s core nature, science, adventure and world culture genres, directing breakout series such as Seconds from Disaster, Mega Structures and Air Crash Investigation. In addition, Daniels managed NGCI’s editorial relationship with strategic co-production and output partners in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Prior to joining NGCI in 2001, Daniels was director of development for National Geographic Television & Film, where, as part of the Program Enterprise Group, he developed and produced specials and series in support of the National Geographic Channel’s rollout worldwide and domestic U.S. launch.
Daniels began his career in new product development at Time-Life Video & Television (TLV), where he played a key role in building TLV into one of the world’s leading home video distributors through the acquisition and marketing of Sir David Attenborough’s Trials of Life, Ken Burns’ The Civil War and in co-production with the BBC on the award-winning children’s series Growing Up Wild. In 1996, Daniels directed Reader’s Digest’s entry into the global television market, heading up international co-productions and program catalog sales.
