EXCLUSIVE: After an extensive search, Grant Bowler (True Blood) has been set to star opposite Lindsay Lohan in Lifetime‘s biopic Liz & Dick, playing Hollywood great Richard Burton.
The biopic chronicles the enduring love of movie icons Taylor (Lohan) and Burton (Bowler), whose fiery romance was the most notorious, publicized and celebrated love affair of its day. The casting comes only 10 days before Liz & Dick is scheduled to begin filming — on June 4 — after the movie’s executive producer Larry A. Thompson and Lifetime had auditioned “many actors on just about any continent,” Thompson said. He noted that the hope was to try and find an actor who, like Burton, is
Welsh, but New Zealander Bowler wowed them with his tape. “Grant will add gravitas to our couple and bring to life one of the greatest actors who has ever lived,” Thompson said. “Burton was a Welsh poet, a rascal, and a man’s man, who swept Elizabeth Taylor off her feet and flew her so close to the sun that they both exploded into stardust that still lights up Hollywood.”

Grant’s casting was sealed today after he did a reading with Lohan at the network. “The chemistry erupted in the room,” said Thompson said, calling Taylor and Burton “the first Hollywood royal couple, the first Brangelina.” Larry A. Thompson Prods is producing the film, which was written by Christopher Monger (Temple Grandin); A+E Networks is handling international distribution. Ugly Betty and True Blood alum Bowler next plays the lead in the Syfy series Defiance. This marks Thompson’s return to Lifetime, where he previously produced the highly rated movie Amish Grace.

I am a big fan of Grant Bowler…loved him on “True Blood”, and “Lost”. He’s got the masculinity and gravitas to play the great Richard Burton. I’ll be tuning in, for sure.
I’ve heard Lifetime may spend up to $5 in production costs for this epic.
How did they make Vancouver look so much like ancient Egypt?!
NOTHING screams Liz Taylor like Lindsey Lohan… No, wait, that sounc is Liz Taylor screaming from the grave!
My thoughts exactly.
That should just about cover the cost of the violet contact lenses for the lead “actress”.
Now i am starting to get interested. Atlas Shrugged did not do well at the BO but Bowler as one of the main characters made it worth watching, sexy and smart. Perfect casting.
Did you read the book? Grant Bowler was an awful Hank Rearden. Along with the uptight Taylor Schilling and the other awful actors and poor production values, he totally ruined the movie.
Lindsay looks a bit like a fatter, older, uglier, Kim Kardashian version of Mila Kunis in that pic.
Yeah read the book ages ago. Bowler looked nothing like Reardon and by his first scene i didn’t care. I was sold. Production values were low rent but his performance wasn’t. He didn’t ruin the movie for me, he salvaged it.
Can’t wait to see this project- in spite of this stupid asses poster…both are perfect to portray the true King and Queen of Hollywood in its hayday years….Kim?????? what a joke.
Atlas Shrugged did well enough that the 2nd part will be released this October.
who’s directing?
Does it matter? It’s Lifetime. It’s bound to be crappy.
Way to go there Linds! Great career trajectory.
This is great! Love Grant Bowler!
“The first Hollywood royal couple, the first Brangelina”
Only forty years after Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford were married.
And if you want to show some Brangelina Hollywood royal couple, why not cast Pitt and Jolie instead? Oh, yeah… Money.
Hmmm I’m gonna be honest, I’m looking fwd to this. Hopefully their chemistry is good
LOVED Grant in Lost. Great choice for Richard. Will definitely tune in. CONGRATS GRANT!
I like Grant too, and he is another Aussie actor about to take over Hollyweird. But Bowler deserves more than a low rent & cheesy biopic on a ridiculous cable network.
For over 35 years Larry Thompson has been producing dreck. Classic TV movies like “Intimate Encounter,” “My Demon Lover,” and “A Date With Darkness.” He’s also produced two unwatchable movies about celebrity couples (Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and Sonny and Cher). So keep your expectations low folks and you will love the “Liz and Dick” flick.
At least he’s getting project made and released. That’s more than a lot of folks get done in this city.
Dang! I might actually have to watch this crapfest. Bowler is phenomenal. He’s the only reason Atlas Shrugged was even remotely watchable. Too bad this isn’t the Scorcese biopic, if that ever gets made. That’s the quality project GB deserves.
Thompson: “Burton was a Welsh poet, a rascal, and a man’s man, who swept Elizabeth Taylor off her feet and flew her so close to the sun that they both exploded into stardust that still lights up Hollywood.”
LOL! So awful it’s HILARIOUS!
It’s very much like fanfiction, except I’ve read fanfiction written better than that.
Another positive vote for Grant, though he’s a little too muscled and healthy to be playing The King of Cocktails.
I wish the best for him, but remain unconvinced that this film will make the finish line….unless Lohan really pulls it together – and none of her recent professional experiences suggest that she has the capacity to do that right now.
Ech. Couldn’t they find a good-looking guy to play Burton?
But considering who they cast as Liz, it’s a lost cause anyway.
My thoughts exactly.
Grant is a gorgeous leading man, very few of them left, and he has many of the same qualities of Burton. Grant makes this project interesting and this could be the beginning of a comeback for Lindsay if she digs in for the role.
Grant is the perfect casting for this. I cant wait to see this movie.
Poor guy. I love Richard Burton and I’m sure any actor would love to play him but Lohan is just repulsive.
I’m sure all the people who tune in to this Lifetime movie to see it for Bowler’s performance will be counted towards Lohan being the draw. It’s a little over the top this pr, “The chemistry erupted in the room,” please and the first Brangelina, I give that to Tracy and Hepburn. Plenty of other Hollywood royal couples since the movies were invented, Thompson.
If anyone can pull this off, it’s Larry who is the perfect producer for this movie. In the golden days of longform, he produced biopic of Duke & Duchess of Windsor, The Woman He Loved, and as a talent manager for decades, understands better than most, star power. As for Lohan, yes she’s been a trainwreck in her personal life, but she is a good actress and one hopes she’ll take this opportunity to re-establish credibility. Good luck to all!
I’m really excited about this! Gives me a reason to tune in. I’m a HUGE Grant Bowler fan from his days as Wolf West on the New Zealand comedy Outrageous Fortune (He is a Kiwi)to his time on Ugly Betty, Lost and True Blood. I think he’ll do a great job. He’s a great actor and is just as good looking as Richard Burton was…if we’re comparing. (I actually think Grant is better looking. lol) And I’m willing to give Lindsay another chance. Maybe she’s finally grown up a bit. Really looking forward to this now.
Are you sure that’s not a picture of that old dude from Showtime’s Gigalo’s? Brace.
Oh, that Richard Burton. I’d be interested to see a Sir Richard Francis Burton biopic, myself.
What a DISASTER!!!. In order for this to have a hope of working LIFETIME needed to show that they have taste and understand actors and cast a real actor… Not a phoney, creepy, imposter like GRANT BOWLER.. Ewwww!!
With all the superb classically trained actors in England and Wales this is what they came up with ???… PLEASE.
Looks like a trainwreck.
Liz & Dick must be rolling in their graves–with hysterical laughter. People seem to forget they were beloved by their co-workers for their generosity and great senses of humor. Doesn’t anyone at Lifetime remember how Universal took a bath some 30 years ago with their biopics “Gable & Lombard” and “W.C. Fields and Me”?
So how in the world do they “fix” a tragic piece of miscasting? By compounding it with another tragic piece of miscasting…
To all the naysayers…I’m looking forward to this succeeding. What great casting, even in the pictures together you can tell there are some sparks and intensity to pull this off.
