EXCLUSIVE: After an extensive search, Grant Bowler (True Blood) has been set to star opposite Lindsay Lohan in Lifetime‘s biopic Liz & Dick, playing Hollywood great Richard Burton.
The biopic chronicles the enduring love of movie icons Taylor (Lohan) and Burton (Bowler), whose fiery romance was the most notorious, publicized and celebrated love affair of its day. The casting comes only 10 days before Liz & Dick is scheduled to begin filming — on June 4 — after the movie’s executive producer Larry A. Thompson and Lifetime had auditioned “many actors on just about any continent,” Thompson said. He noted that the hope was to try and find an actor who, like Burton, is
Welsh, but New Zealander Bowler wowed them with his tape. “Grant will add gravitas to our couple and bring to life one of the greatest actors who has ever lived,” Thompson said. “Burton was a Welsh poet, a rascal, and a man’s man, who swept Elizabeth Taylor off her feet and flew her so close to the sun that they both exploded into stardust that still lights up Hollywood.”

Grant’s casting was sealed today after he did a reading with Lohan at the network. “The chemistry erupted in the room,” said Thompson said, calling Taylor and Burton “the first Hollywood royal couple, the first Brangelina.” Larry A. Thompson Prods is producing the film, which was written by Christopher Monger (Temple Grandin); A+E Networks is handling international distribution. Ugly Betty and True Blood alum Bowler next plays the lead in the Syfy series Defiance. This marks Thompson’s return to Lifetime, where he previously produced the highly rated movie Amish Grace.

Grant’s an incredible actor and, if anybody cares, a hell of a nice guy. As a Richard Burton fan since the days of “Spy Who Came In From The Cold”, I’m hoping Grant and Burton are both served well by this.

Genius!!!!
I really like Grant. He’s very charismatic. Would make a great James Bond.
Rebecca you need to get a life. The guy is a talent, name a role he did not do well. At least it appears that Lifetime is putting some effort to make this a class event, and if you weren’t intrigued then why are you even posting on it. It looks really interesting if everyone delivers.
I hope Lindsay completely blows away all the nay-sayers with her performers and permanently silences them.
Think Lindsay’s a very interesting choice for Liz. She certainly knows about being in the eye of a celebrity shit storm and while she’s no doubt a serious head case, she’s actually a very talented actress. I would never watch anything on Lifetime, but I think Ms. Lohan’s an inspired choice.
Grant Bowler is perfect for this role. I was not that interested in the movie but seeing him in Atlas and True Blood I have no doubt he will become Richard Burton. Great Casting.
Just a random aside…
-IF- Kim could act,the actress she could physically convincingly portray, in my opinion of course, is Ava Gardner.
Never judge til you have walked in anothers shoes….
I personally feel sorry for Lindsay and how the public has pushed to know every little thing about her life. We put them on those pedestals and we knock them down too… so sad….
I am very happy she is trying to get her life back together and wish her all the best.
