EXCLUSIVE UPDATED: Big news for Grey’s Anatomy fans. I’ve learned that all original cast members whose future on the ABC medical drama had been up in the air amid contract negotiations, have re-upped for two more seasons. That includes Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers as well as James Pickens, Jr. and Chandra Wilson.
With the uncertainty
surrounding the core quartet, Grey’s Anatomy creator-showrunner Shonda Rhimes had written the upcoming eighth season finale in a way that would leave the door open for them potentially departing Seattle Grace. The new contracts with Pompeo, Dempsey, Oh, Chambers, Pickens Jr. and Wilson pave the way for Grey’s to be renewed for a ninth season, something that already was all but guaranteed.

Now with these actors signing on for 2 more season, I guess we could expect that a possible season 10 is going to be GA’s “curtain call”
YES!!! Freaking hell yes!!! I always wanted Grey’s to go 10 seasons. They’ve signed on for up to 10 seasons now. Ah, I breathe a sigh of relief. This is so good. MerDer can move on and upwards with their baby, and work lives, and all the MerDer fans can see their favourite couple for another 2 seasons after this one. Thank gosh!
I agree I cried alittle thinking that I would have to say good bye to patrick and that I thought that they were calling it quites after season 8 but two more I am so excited.
Excellent news! Not one season, but two more! Thank you, ABC.
The show is amazing.. The symbolism is very interesting. I’m happy the main characters are staying.. frankly, I was not worried about them! What actor would leave the number 1 show on TV? (without serious cause). Happy to watch the show for another two years!
Oh, weel, I can’t wait to see Mr. Dempsey! He’s gorgeousss!!!
There goes any suspense about the finale now that its known all the originals are back for 2 years. I understand why ABC would want to keep it around but the show has become so stale. I really hope there is a plan in place to breathe some life back into it if its going to be on for years to come.
I can only say this is great news for Grey’s Anatomy and a very wise decision on ABC’s part. While I do like some of the newer cast members on GA, the core cast is what continually keeps me coming back even when the show wavers in quality, so all of the S1 originals re-upping their contracts will keep me coming back to it each week. Thanks for the update!
Thank god! I mean thank god! I’m sorry, but Lexie is not interesting enough to be the main focus.
I’m glad to hear Grey’s will continue for at least two more years. And I’m very relieved to know that Ellen and Sandra are staying on. But with all the originals in place, who is it that is supposed to die? As long as it is not Callie, I will continue to tune in. But if Sara leaves the show, so will I. She’s the reason I started watching back in S4 and the reason I continue to tune in.
YES! I don’t know what I would do without these characters on Grey’s!
This is fantastic news. Story doesn’t say whether Dempsey got his reduced schedule to do more car racing, or whether he will be in all or only some episodes. I hope it’s ALL and they simply reduce his hours.
There was no show if the core couple Derek and Meredith did not remain. Auto racing is very expensive, he relies on the check so I guess everyone got what they wanted. It will be interesting to see how they keep him happy.
Now if only they could get him to stop mumbling his dialogue. And no more phoning it in please. Though he is so delicious I guess it doesn’t matter. He can just stand there with his shirt off. Thank you ABC!
This is great! I was really sure Richard or Derek would kick the bucket, and either of those would have been sad. The chances of the death being one of the deadweight characters has just risen immensely.
Bring isiah back. He was the bomb! C’mon…. let him say he’s sorry and then bring him back.
YES!!! Sandra Oh is beyond great as Cristina! So happy! Her and K McKidd are why I watch.
Speaking of McKidd, has he re-signed?
don’t think he needed too…since he came on later i’m pretty sure his contract went through season 9
IF someone major is still getting killed off, is this just a way of throwing off our suspicions it’s one of them. I know it’s probably april, but you never know.
yea i am wondering too, who is going to die.
Great news! I knew they would be back! This is in my ultimate top five shows. Uh oh! What about Eric Dane and Sara Ramirez?!?!?!?!?! I need my McSteamy and Callie too!!!!!
The show as been struggling since Katherine Heigl left in my opinion. Love her or hate her, it was at its best when she was in it. Season 2 without doubt the best of the entire run. Not sure two more seasons is any to be positive about after the last two.
it’s better without her
the actors dont want to pull a heigl… they know they need to ride this thing out…
This news made my day. As long as Sandra Oh and Justin Chambers stick with Grey’s, so will I. Love them. I wouldn’t miss any of the newer characters. The originals are Grey’s to me. Very happy to hear this.
This proves that the shocking death is Callie. She’s signed on to do a Broadway show in the fall.
Oh thank god, I was worried the mediocrity wouldn’t continue.
bring back izzie and it will be great again, so hapy that the original 6 have up signed up. relief
If this is true, I’M SO RELIEVED! I feared Shonda would kill off Derek but now that he’s still on board, he can’t be the one dying. So it must be either Callie or Arizona. Don’t mind about that.
Now I only hope ABC.com will confirm this news, then I believe it.
The stars of DH had their contracts renewed for 2 seasons at the end of last season only to have the show end this year, just because the G A stars signed for 2 years dosent garentee 2. More years
Does anyone know about Sarah and Jessica? Please!
Grey’s is showing its age and I had hoped it would go out on a high note. Now it will limp along for 2 more years with repetitive storylines. I will say I am surprised that all of the actors signed on. I thought some would want to pursue more challenging roles then the drivel half of them get on the show. Money talks for actors like Dempsey I guess.
