EXCLUSIVE: On the 20th anniversary of Johnny Carson’s final Tonight Show, HBO has optioned Once Upon A Time In Beverly Hills, an article Matt Tyrnauer wrote in the March 2011 issue of Vanity Fair. HBO will develop it into a movie about the long, unusual relationship between Beverly Hills socialite Janet de Cordova and her longtime housekeeper Gracie Covarrubias.
Tyrnauer, who helmed the documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor, will direct, and John Hoffman will write the script.
Janet was the wife of Freddie de Cordova, Carson’s long time Tonight Show producer. She came to Hollywood hoping to use her beauty to become an actress, but through de Cordova she found her way into the center of the social swirl as one of the true socialites of her era. The de Cordova couple lived lavishly, and threw the most opulent A-list parties populated by the likes of Gary Cooper, Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Billy Wilder, Dean Martin, Jimmy Stewart, Lew Wasserman, and Ray Stark. In the process, she spent way more than de Cordova earned. By her side always was Covarrubias, her Mexican servant who tended to de Cordova’s every need, down to periodically stirring the drink de Cordova held in her hand. When her husband died, de Cordova was forced to sell her Beverly Hills estate. Eventually, she went to live in Mexico with Covarribias, who, to the surprise of de Cordova, had used her years of earnings to build a house that was a miniature replica of the home de Cordova was forced to sell. All of her friends had abandoned her or died, but not Covarribias.
The film will be executive produced by Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick, Management 360′s Darin Friedman, Wendy Stark, and Tyrnauer.

I remember this Vanity Fair piece from a while ago(it wasn’t from the March 2012 issue, that’s for sure.
It was very good–an interesting tale. I kept thinking about it when I watched that AMAZING PBS doc on Carson last week.
Should be interesting.
Read this story a year ago in Vanity Fair. Should be interesting.
Good story.
Thanks a lot.
Reminds me of the William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies.
so many times you read about a project on here and are bored before you even finish the headline… this sounds crazy good. thanks, HBO!
It could make a good movie if done right.
Stories like this are cool. Living life in extremes. Living with character flaws and learning humility. It’s odd and strange, and very real. Bonds we make with people in life take unexpected and surprising turns.
Paging Michelle Pfeiffer…
Great article. Remember thinking what a good film it would make.
Matt is a class act.
Sounds cool.
Here’s the story:

This sounds really interesting. And I like movies with actors portraying stars from the past.
Fred was a mentor of mine. They don’t make them like that anymore. Janet was very good to me and my wife and I helped her after Fred died. I’m glad HBO has it but I hope it’s done accurately. Matt – who was kind to me in his emails – will be great and I hope John Hoffman nails it. Like the article, I will look forward to it.
Just after her husband died, Janet called on my boss, then the most high-profile Hollywood attorney and old friend of Freddie, to ask about suing a drug company for adverse side effects she was experiencing. The matter was passed down to me, then a young lawyer. This woman was not nice. She was condescending and disrespectful. She was clearly entitled and didn’t like “no” for an answer. The complete opposite of her husband from what I am told her husband was like.
