Universal Pictures has just released a new trailer for The Bourne Legacy, the Tony Gilroy-directed spinoff film that stars Jeremy Renner as a Treadstone assassin, same as Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne in the Robert Ludlum novels. The surprise in this trailer is how much Jason Bourne there is in the trailer. You’ll recall that Damon wasn’t ready to make another installment of The Bourne Identity franchise when director Paul Greengrass said no. Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac also star while Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn are back. Damon has left the door open to reprising Jason Bourne, and it looks here like they’ve allotted him ample room to do that while giving stage to the rising Renner. Frank Marshall produced with Captivate’s Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith. The film opens August 3.

Looks pretty awesome and Tony Gilroy was the right man for this job. So glad they didn’t recast Bourne and that this is just a spin-off. Now Matt Damon can come back in the next film and fight Renner if he wants to.
My thoughts exactly, or they could team up. Trailer looks great and the story seems to intersect or play alongside the events of Ultimatum.
Wow – this looks pretty damn cool! I’d love to see the Damon/Renner showdown.
This looks kinda cheesy.
Dude, you’re cheesy!!!
Actually looks quite promising.
Glad this wasn’t by Paramount or else they would have panicked and pulled the film from its scheduled release date so they could 3D it and shoot extra scenes with Matt Damon!
Looks Great! Renner’s Awesome
Wow. I’m definitely in for this.
Looks good to me.
Nice bonus with Rachael Weisz.
“Chromosomes”? Oh, great, it’s The Phantom Bourne Menace.
You’re confusing midichlorians with chromosomes, you idiot!
Jeremy Renner just isn’t a leading man to me. He’s OK. He’s not great, not bad. I don’t get why people think he belongs in action films.
Rachel Weisz is better than this. She should’ve been in a real Bond film with her hubby.
If Damon returns for Borne 5 I’ll watch pt.4. Until then this is an easy pass.
Didn’t you see ‘The Hurt Locker’?
Renner may not look like a traditional leading man, but the guy has screen presence, and that’s something which has been missing whenever a Taylor, Garret or Sam has headlined these blockbusters.
Help out a novice here…
Who are Taylor, Garret and Sam?
The first time I ever saw Jeremy Renner was as “Hawk” in the regular (Not 3-D) Avengers.
He did a GREAT job switching from good guy to bad guy and back to great guy again. Even with Ruffalo’s “the Hulk” I remember Renner’s role the most…in a word? Awesome (I know it is a cliche…)
Yes I am glad that they left an opening for Matt Damon to return as the original Treadstone dude. But not as competitor with Renner but as a dynamic duo. (Sorry nothing but cliches today…)
And I certainly hope they keep Moby’s theme song “Extreme Ways.”
I see about five movies a year in theaters…so this may be one of them..
This looks kinda great
Avengers–hello!? It WORKS to create great independent characters and bring them together in sequels. Makes the sequels ABOUT something.
This looks awesome by the way, like MICHAEL CLAYTON on ‘roids.
I love the movies and the books. Too bad that Hollywood continues its obsessive and sad tradition of making the U.S. government and military the bad guys. In the books, Treadstone personnel are good people and the program a positive one, as is Jason Bourne and his mission against foreign aggressors. -sigh-
Did not know that. Disappointing to hear, but not surprised.
You’re missing the point. The U.S. Field Operatives are the heroes. Battered faces, dirty clothes, split knuckles, unstoppable bad assery… The real villains in these movies are the clean, well-dressed bureaucrats in D.C.
By making it morally ambiguous, you add some heat and energy. And if I were an illiterate goat herder-turned-Al Qaeda Operative watching ‘boots of these movies, I would be Very Afraid.
If everyone’s the good guys, where’s the drama?
Way to stay relevant Mark. Would you prefer that Bourne battled Carlos the Jackal, instead?
Renner is an outcome assassin, not treadstone.
Looks cool.
Edward Norton.. pass, he doesn’t play well with others.
Gilroy can write the hell out of a script but I’m still not sold that he was the right director for this flick.
Alert the presses! YOU…are not sold. Oh, no!!!! And, all this conjecture from a trailer. Wow! You’re good!!!
Michael Clayton was awesome. I will base my faith in Gilroy on that and the fact that he understands the Bourne franchise having scripted the other Bourne movies.
it’s a great trailer i’m definitly interested
Interesting that the pacing is very similar to G.I. JOE 2′s trailer..
Looks really cool and sexy!! Love the change and Jeremy Renner in this role. Great choice team Bourne!
It looks like a placeholder film until Damon decides to come back.
Of all of HW’s male actors that are poised for a major break-out, I think Renner has the best chance of success with capturing the support of the average male in middle America. He has a great screen presence, but isn’t a pretty boy. He also carries himself well in interviews, as opposed to being quirky. Women will forgive quirky, may even find it endearing, but not the football/NASCAR loving guys in flyover. Just my thoughts…
