His language was clean, but America’s Got Talent‘s newest judge Howard Stern came out swinging today — especially against his new primetime rivals and critics. “American Idol is tired,” said Stern during a New York news conference ahead of his debut on the show’s Season 7 premiere May 14. “Ryan Seacrest wants to be the next Dick Clark; I got news for him, Dick Clark isn’t here anymore.” The Sirius XM DJ also mocked Idol’s Jennifer Lopez as lacking any bite as a judge. He also lampooned Britney Spears’ becoming a judge on The X Factor with Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid. “Britney still thinks the earth is flat,” laughed Stern. “We are going to tune in to see if she can function through the thing.” Stern also dismissed recent criticism by the Parents Television Council that he would be too explicit for NBC primetime. “This is a family show, it’s a different type of entertainment; I know the rules,” he said.
Stern denied today there were ever substantive talks about him joining American Idol as a judge. The radio host admitted, however, that he had been in conversations with ABC last year about creating a judging-type show around him. Without providing details, he said the discussions never really went anywhere. Calling himself a media “elder statesmen,” Stern promised to bring real criticism and a sense of commercial viability to his newest gig. “If America likes me, it’s the best hire NBC ever made,” a suddenly serious Stern said. “I take it as a huge responsibility, I always want to do well for the people who hire me.” The man who once called himself the King of All Media also joked that his judging duties were an audition of a different type for him too. “I’m using this as a stepping stone to my next job on the Supreme Court,” he said.

This whole thing feels a lot like NBC’s push for the “Playboy Club” series, which tanked. If you can’t find talent, just throw shock value at the wall and hope something sticks.

Stern’s act has been the same tired old thing for many years. And neutering his speech won’t improve his appeal one bit. What’s next for NBC? How about “Jackass The TV Show”?
keeping it clean = howard stern ceasing to be howard stern, why have him then? what’s the point?
Because being ‘unclean’ is not what Howard Stern is truly about…as you and the rest of America will get the opportunity to see in the coming weeks.
Listen to his recent interviews of Andy Cohen and Sasha Baron Cohen – the former I find irritating and useless onscreen, the latter I believe is one of the great loving comedic talents – the interviews were not about penis size. They were insightful, curious and well informed musings on talent, showbiz and philosophy.
*Loving = Living…although, who know knows, Sasha may be a loving comedic talent, too. : /
Anyone who says “same tired old thing” obviously doesn’t listen to the show. The man is a genius. The show is hilarious. It’s an amazing thing to do what he does for 4/5 hours a day. He can keep doing that “same tired old thing” forever as far as I’m concerned. He will be charming and honest on AGT I’m sure, a show I’ve never watched before but will now.
Howard Stern is a genius? LOL. All he does is make rude comments about people’s ethnicity, race, nationality, sexual preference, etc. He’s the same jerk who said nasty things about kids who were brutally murdered in past school shootings. How does that qualify for comedic genius, again? You can always tell when PAs write posts…
Again as lulu said “obviously you don’t listen” which means you have no idea what you are talking about. But by all means do go on with your very pithy and wise observation and regurgitate the talking points. Brilliant.
Howard Stern made idiotic statements about kids who were murdered during the Columbine High School massacre. I remember when he mocked Selena’s death because she was Hispanic. When Michelle Yeoh went on his show, he insulted her with racist, sexual language, targeting her heritage. He takes calls from listeners who use racial slurs like the N-word. Over the years, he’s made hateful comments about many people’s backgrounds. This is a fact. There’s nothing genius about his stupid, bigoted behavior. Chelsea Handler does the same thing. Thanks for proving my point, Mr. Personal Assistant, with your vague, inane response.
Howard is real, so you will get honest opinion. That’s why they hired him. Annette – you may be too young to remember, but Jackass started as a TV SHOW!
Stern is perfect. He knows now (and has always known) exactly what he is doing.
NBC throws a hail mary pass, he’ll say something awful and NBC exces won’t have a clue what to do. He’s like Al Sharpton, they’re stuck with him no matter what he does.
Never was much of a fan of his radio show, but he’s a media savvy guy. He definitely knows what he’d doing and he’s more than smart enough to know the difference between his radio show and America’s Got Talent.
Howard Stern is honest. That’s why he’s great. That’s his real schtick: he’s utterly honest. His lack of hypocrisy is the thing people fear.
He’ll show up the rest of the assorted TV talent judges as the mawkish, dishonest phonies they are. Will that sell? Who knows. Will it be fun to watch? Oh yeah.
Jackass was never a NETWORK prime time show.
I’m not shocked. Listen to Howard (when it’s not another repeat) and all he talks about is AGT. He’s become a schill for the network. Sad.
I never watch these stupid talent/singing shows. But I will watch this for Howard, and Im not the only one
