IMAX grossed $21.1+M worldwide this weekend for 3D superhero actioner Marvel’s The Avengers bringing its global IMAX cume to approximately $31.2M
through Sunday night. IMAX Avengers brought in $6.1 mil internationally (which includes an amazing first day gross in China of $1.1M) on 174 digital-only locations. In North America IMAX had one big problem: it ran out of seats to sell. Avengers grossed $15+M domestically on 275 digital-only IMAX screens, which looks to be a virtual tie with the Harry Potter finale for the highest grossing opening weekend in IMAX’s history. It reports 17 of the top 20 engagements in North America playing the film were IMAX runs, and 110 domestic IMAX locations established a new opening Saturday record. The domestic per screen average will come in at approximately $55K for the weekend. It was IMAX’s biggest domestic opening weekend for a digital only release, and IMAX’s biggest opening for 2012 so far.

Joss Whedon wrote a really great film.
This is a problem some studios would love to have, right?
My IMAX show in Seattle on Fri morning wasn’t sold out. This Fri May 11th some IMAX theaters will have to decide if they want to book Dark Shadows or hang onto The Avengers. I say hang onto the latter since it is expected to make a record breaking $200.3 M by Sunday.
School isn’t out. So, that means that it upticked later in the day.
The IMAX at our local multiplex was sold out for the entire weekend before the weekend even started. That’s insane. We might buy tickets for next weekend around Wednesday or Thursday to make sure we get seats.
It’s a pure blockbuster, but in the very best sense of the word. Before it became synonymous with style over substance, Blockbuster meant feel-good, funny, memorable characters getting into incredible situations, with great one liners, killer monologues and the sense, that no matter what else, the film creators just wanted to entertain you. I could criticize some of Avengers individual parts, but it’s whole is far in excess of any of them. This is something I’ve not felt in a while, and I’m glad Joss Whedon remember it too.
The film was great. Grosses are very impressive. I saw it at my local Laemmle Theatre in North Hollywood in 2D. Everyone enjoyed it just the same. Applause at the end.
DIGITAL IMAX – better known to many as LIE-MAX, screens are smaller, no horizontal 70mm film used.
I wanted to see avengers in Imax 3d, but for some reason the IMAX at Arizona Mills here in Phoenix isnt showing it. They are still playing “Wrath of the Titans” which has been out for weeks now, and presumably most people who have already seen it have done so already. Can anybody explain to me why an IMAX would be showing a several-weeks-old movie to 90+% empty theatres in the 5th biggest city in America instead of making money hand over fist by showing a movie everybody wants to see? I am happy to pay the premium to see this movie and I know it is playing elsewhere in IMAX format so they obviously COULD be showing avengers yet they dont…, so what the crap is the problem here!? GRRRRRR
Grrrrrr. Hulk pleased with big open weekend.
Grrrrrr. Hulk not pleased with IMAX.
Hulk pissed Marvel movies only getting limited run on IMAX.
Hulk think Dork Shadows gonna bomb.
Hulk think with $207 million open weekend, Hulk think Marvel movies deserve longer runs on ALL IMAX screens.
Hulk think IMAX better rectify this for future Marvel movies.
Otherwise
HULK SMASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oooo. Hulk head hurt after writing so much.
Hulk stomp Loki’s ass again.
There are two types of IMAX theaters. (1) The original 70 mm film IMAX theaters that some people call the “true” IMAX theaters. And (2) the newer digital IMAX theaters that some people regard as “fake” IMAX theaters that are nothing more than large widescreen theaters. The Avengers was released as a digital IMAX movie ONLY. It can NOT play in the original 70 mm film “true” IMAX theaters. That’s why those IMAX theaters are still playing Wrath of the Titans. Dark Shadows and The Dark Knight Returns, on the other hand, will be released in BOTH digital IMAX and 70 mm film “true” IMAX formats and can play in ALL IMAX theaters.
Thanks for the info monarchmike. That might explain the situation here in phoenix. You would think that the studio would have released it then, in both formats. They left a crapload of money on the table I bet, with all of those empty imax theatres showing wrath of the titans instead of avengers. Not sure if Arizona Mills is the 70mm one, but that’s probably the case and explains why I cant go see Avengers in IMAX locally
This annoys me to no end because I wanted to see it on IMAX this weekend but currently they will be showing dark shadows and for some reason wrath of the titans. I cant imagine there will be a huge run on either of those 2 movies this weekend.
That’s because your IMAX theater is a 70mm film IMAX theater. The Avengers was released in digital IMAX only and can only be played in digital IMAX theaters. See my post above.
Go to AMC
They had it. The marathon rocked!
Went back the next night to see it again ( yup) in IMAX . Amazing! 18 hours in 1 1/2 days .. Must get a life:)
