The long-expected renewal of Southland was announced this morning in a message from TNT head of programming Michael Wright:
TNT’s Southland will return.
I’m proud today to announce that TNT has ordered 10 episodes for a fifth season of Southland, scheduled to begin in February 2013.
Season after season, critics and fans alike have championed TNT’s Southland as one of television’s best dramas. This year, the show has not only solidified its impassioned fan base, but also picked up some new young-adult devotees along the way.
In its fourth season, Southland centered its focus on four primary characters played by four outstanding actors:
• Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, who bounced back from surgery and an addiction to painkillers only to be put under the microscope of a new partner.
• Shawn Hatosy as Officer Sammy Bryant, who chose to give up being a detective and return to the streets as a uniformed patrolman.
• Regina King as Detective Lydia Adams, who faces probably the biggest challenge of her life, becoming a mother.
• Ben McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, who became a full-fledged officer only to risk his career and the life of his new partner.
And speaking of new partners, this year’s Southland featured terrific performances by Lucy Liu and Dorian Missick. Lucy Liu’s Officer Jessica Tang gave Cooper a run for his money when it comes to personal baggage. And Dorian Missick’s Detective Ruben Robinson provided exactly the kind of experienced parental insight Lydia needed as she prepares to embark on her new life as a mother. We also enjoyed great guest performances by Lou Diamond Phillips, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Marla Gibbs, Carl Lumbly, Tracey Walter and, as the unforgettable Officer Dewey Dudek, C. Thomas Howell.
TNT’s Southland found new ways this year to get under our skin with scenes and events that electrify us emotionally:
• Ben lashing out with a venomous rage we’ve never seen before when he attacks a pimp and has to be dragged off by Sammy.
• Lydia finally coming to terms with her pregnancy after being attacked and stabbed by a gang member.
• Tang hiding a toy gun’s safety tip in order to cover up a horrible mistake.
• John using his own personal story as a gay man to prevent a teen from committing suicide.
• Sammy lying slumped over and bleeding in his patrol car after he and Ben are slammed in a collision.
• John and Tang discovering a body in the wheel well of a minivan (a macabre image I’m sure few of us will ever forget).
We are very proud of Southland and grateful to everyone involved in the series, including executive producers John Wells, Chris Chulack and Jonathan Lisco; creator Ann Biderman; and our partners at Warner Bros. Television. We look forward to going deeper into the lives of Southland‘s extraordinary characters and the streets they struggle to keep safe next year.

Thank God!! Love SouthLAnd!!
Outstanding, but why only 10 episodes…NBC has lost many great shows…and have kept a lot of crappy shows on forever…I don’t understand it…can someone explain this to me…Southland is the best cop show on tv since the 70′s with Police Story and Hill St. Blues and of course my all time favorite Adam-12…those shows are still relavant today…good training for new law enforcement officers…the personal side…!!!
Couldn’t agree more Pete: Best. Show. On. Television. Period.
I got new repect for TNT after this. Nice to see another channel than just Fox with Fringe, and HBO with Treme among other keeps their great shows also. Just not only the hits. Southland seasong 4 was the best season of series so far in my mind.
Awesome. NBC should have never let this one get away.
I MUST AGREE WITH JAMES@15 ABOUT SOUTHLAND. NBC PROGRAM CHIEF MUST FEEL LIKE A DUMB FOR LETTING THIS SHOW GETTING. IT IS RARE TO SEE A SHOW THAT HAVE A STRONG SET OF CHARACTER. I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE FIFTH SEASON TO START.
When will the Emmy’s take note of this show… easily one of the best on TV.
Happy about the renewal. But bummer we have to wait until February 2013. I guess the studio tried, but failed to get 13 episodes. Not surprised though.
Great news. Have been a fan since day one. Can’t wait for more.
Hell yeah. Best cop show on tv, and one of the best dramas too. Great show and great cast.
Fantastic news! It’s one of the best shows on the air. NBC is so stupid for letting it go.
Score one for scripted television. Down with reality tv !
Just echoing what everyone else has said: One of TV’s best shows and I’m thrilled it’s coming back. Now if Emmy would take notice…..
Great news. Why Regina King doesn’t have an Emmy is beyond me.
Yes! She so deserves an Emmy! Especially for this year’s season. She was brilliant.
Made my day! Best show on TV. Curious to see who they cast in place of Lucy Liu. My vote is to make Lawrence Gilliard Jr. a regular.
So glad to read this. “Southland” has consistently been one of the best shows on TV. Many thanks to TNT!
ALRIGHT COOL
Proof Once again what a bunch doofus brains and Party bois at NBC that let this one get away
Best cop show since The Wire. Michael Kudlitz and Lucy Liu made a great team in season 4; gave Kudlitz an opportunity to really shine as an actor.
Great show. And echoing others, I cannot believe the Peacock Network (NBC) let “Southland” slip through its money-grubbing fingers. Their loss is TNT’s gain. Way to go TNT for sticking with a well-scripted, well-acted winner. Anyone know who is the TNT exec responsible for keeping Southland on the air, season after season? He or she deserves a hearty and public shout out for such a keen and inspired choice.
HOO-YA! That’s what I’m talking about. Great writing, great direction, great performances. Thank you John Wells, Warner Bros & TNT.
Great news” Just sorry, that the did not go for 13 episodes as the producers had hoped. 10 a year are way too less for this brilliant show.
Echoing everyone else: Great show. Great, great acting. Great writing.
Hate to be a bore and agree with everyone, but everything that’s been said is true: it’s one of the best dramas on television and this is a well deserved renewal.
Happy for the renewal but disappointed by the 10 episode limit. Eventually these quality actors (and perhaps writers and other production staff) are going to give up with being locked into contracts for lower salaries and fewer episodes.
Big props to TNT for being bold enough to grab and expand this brilliant show. This is quality television at its best, and I can’t wait for more!
I’m speaking from experience. As a 20 year veteran cop in L.A. I have watched SouthLAnd from day one. It is by far the most compelling and accurate portrayal of cops on and off the streets. I’m also a huge fan of another TNT gem “The Closer”.”KUDOS” to TNT.
King, Cudlitz, Hatosy and McKenzie. Yeah boi.
