EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is in talks with Jason Bateman, Zac Efron, Goldie Hawn, and Leslie Mann to headline the ensemble of This Is Where I Leave You, the Adam Shankman-directed adaptation of the Jonathan Tropper comic novel about four siblings who come home to sit ‘shiva’ for their deceased father. They are trapped in the house for seven days, and all the skeletons are bared. Tropper, who memorably adapted Harvey into a script that once had Steven Spielberg committed to direct, adapted his own novel. It is a script that is drawing interest from a lot of talent, with other stars expected to step up for other roles in the ensemble. Spring Creek’s Paula Weinstein and Jeff Levine are producing with Shankman’s Offspring Entertainment partner Jennifer Gibgot. Hawn, who last starred in 2002′s The Banger Sisters, is in talks to play the clan’s mother. Bateman, Efron (whom Shankman directed in Hairspray) and Mann will play siblings. The intention is to begin production in early September. Shankman just directed the musical Rock of Ages, with Tom Cruise starring.

Leslie Mann in a movie her husband didn’t produce/direct/write?!? Wow!
I’m sure it’s a favor to Apatow. Can’t think of any other reason.
I’d love to see Goldie Hawn back onscreen. Always likes her.
Bottle episode!
That book was hilarious! So glad to see it will be a movie and can’t wait to see it!
I don’t want to be negative… but this is not the right cast if you read that book.
Goldie Hawn as the mom would probably be dope, actually, but not sold on everyone else… even though I love Bateman and really like Leslie Mann, too. Zac Efron should be a definite no.
Ugh… this will be the most Aryan looking Jewish family ever. Remember when they used to cast real looking people in films who could act?
Yeah, I agree with you. Zac Efron is just a “no”. They’re probably thinking of casting him as Judd’s younger brother . And as I read the book, I don’t know, I kinda pictured Seth Rogen to play Judd.
Sounds like perfect casting! So exciting. I loved this book!
Quiet. She’s been in non-Apatow productions before, and is a talented actress.
98% of what Zac Efron does fails. Why is he constantly being used? He does not put asses in seats.. Please explain?
Janey, my dear, just a quick clarification, if you will: by “fail,” which are you referring to: the $22,000,000 opening of THE LUCKY ONE, or, the $24,000,000 opening of 17 AGAIN? Ah, perhaps you are referencing the last $20,000,000 of Hairspray’s final tally, which was largely attributed to Zac-mania. Thanks for the clarity, the punditry, and all the other wonderful contributions you have made to this column, Janey. You clearly are the consummate Hollywood insider, and there is no chance you are a lonely, petty, vile little assistant, toiling away in some thankless job.
hmm hating much?
have you ever seen his movies? if not then shut up.
Leslie Mann in it? I’ll see it just for her as she is a real beauty and talent. The dudes — could care less. Goldie? Gotta love the Goldie.
Good
Efron can draw people when cast in the right material. e.g. 17 again and The Lucky One. He’s contantly being hired because he’s a star and a talented actor.
That is not true, and you know it.
Not loving the casting on this one either – esp Leslie Mann. Tiwily Fan is right, this will be the most Aryan looking cast playing a Jewish family ever. She’s so not what I pictured when I read the book. Underwhelmed, and I loved the book.
Just FYI, Goldie Hawn & Zac Efron are both Jewish. I think this could be really funny. Zac Efron has great comic timing if given the chance. He’s worked with Leslie Mann before (who IMO is great) and Jason Bateman is hysterical. Goldie, of course, is awesome.
The Lorax and The Lucky One did not flop.
I love how you can see Efron’s fan girls on report! He may put a few asses in seats, but come one…surely you fan girls can read critics reviews and also realize that you can’t call The Lucky One a huge hit…surely you guys can see that. And The Lorax selling had nothing to do with Efron. It had to do with Dr. Suess and it being a staple in every single home for the past 50 years among children. They could have picked a rat to voice that kid and it would have made millions. Be realistic and IA….Efron is just one lucky SOB, cuz he sucks tbh.
The whole time I read this book I pictured Jason Bateman in my head!! He is SO perfect!
Definitely Seth Rogan as Judd. He’s perfect for the role . As mom I can see Minnie Driver
Minnie Driver? Isn’t she like 40 years old?
