It was a very good week for Jimmy Kimmel. Last Thursday, Jimmy Kimmel Live! had its first in-season victory over The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Even though he doesn’t come on until midnight, the ABC host beat his NBC rival by 4% in adults 18-49 on May 10. The fact that Kimmel’s Nightline lead-in had its highest rating for the week as well helped. Kimmel also beat out David Letterman at CBS in adults 18-34: Jimmy Kimmel Live! topped Late Show With David Letterman on May 7 (+5%), May 9 (+60%), and May 11 (+20%). The May 11 show, a Friday, was a Kimmel repeat vs. a new Letterman.
Kimmel also outperformed The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson in 18-49 by 48% last week, and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon by 15% in 18-49 and 22% in total viewers. The ABC upfront host and this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner headliner saw his total viewership and demo draw grow 2% during the May 7 week, his best performance in six months. Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s growth, the only one among the late-night talk shows, could turn this season into his most watched since 2006-2007.

Well done, Jimmy!
Congrats Jimmy! Your show has been constantly refreshing, it’s nice to see how your show developed and blossomed in the last decade! Well deserved.
Jimmy must have a big shit eating grin, especially given his (well deserved) disdain toward Leno. Keep it up Jimmy!
Could it be that telling funny jokes about politicians on both sides is more appealing than one-sided unfunny jokes?
Good on ya Jimmy.
Good for Jimmy and everything but until he does it consistently, it really means nothing. Buzz from the White House thing.
Where Kimmel does have a major advantage is the 18-49 demo, he’s just barely behind Jay and Dave in that regard and I can only see his audience growing.
Bout time! Jimmy kills Jay and David, he’s the only late night hose I watch anymore.
Kimmel is the best.
Jimmy – Just because you beat Letterman & Leno one day doesn’t mean you’re the KING of late night.
Try doing it for 20 years.
When did he say he was? Keep trolling, troll.
Whoa, calm down. It’s not like he wrote the press release.
Based on what reality exactly? The neilsen ratings has been a joke since 1999… Why everyone allows this farce to continue is beyond me. Would it really cost that much to get someone to write a little code and create an accurate ratings system for tv cable and internet? Geezus, Verizon can send me a bill showing me every single call I made and how long I talked yet today we still go with…. “whatever neilsen makes up is the truth” when we all know it isn’t. Maybe the networks don’t really want to know how many are really… NOT watching. Just a thought…
So when it comes to TV ratings, you complain that “we still go with ‘whatever Nielsen makes up is the truth’” … and yet when it comes to phone bills, you yourself go with whatever Verizon makes up is the truth.
You mad, bro?
You speak the truth
If there are no total cable-company provided figures, what makes you think the Nielsen ratings are overstated? It’s possible they could also be understated. No data suggests either direction.
Also, some people still get free over-the-air TV.
Thanks you. I’ve been writing about this too. It’s an antiquated system that does not work inthe digital age. YouTube videos get a better audience sampling than Nielsen at this point.
I know there are privacy issues involved, especially in terms of how information is collected from a set-top box in someone’s private home. But can’t cable companies get anonymous but still extremely accurate info about what customers are watching? Why would NBC pay Nielsen for ratings when they can get them from their corporate siblings at Comcast’s cable division?
How about giving us the TOTAL VIEWERS instead of the coveted 18-49 numbers, or are you afraid to do that?
There’s more to winning than a specific demographic – give us the overall.
Geez John, you might want to seek therapy if you find it necessary to rant like that on a story like this.
Amazes me that you care enough to both read this story and launch into a rant.
Hey John,
The devil is in the details, but spending so much time on the rating system flaws is pointless. The point is Kimmel is making solid advances on Leno and Letterman.
Who cares about the methodology? Maybe, the numbers are not fully accurate, but the upward trend is.
End of story!!!!!
Jimmy Kimmel Live! is the best talk show out there, hands down. I’ve been watching his show for years. When I watch Leno or Letterman, its humor suited for my grandparents. Jimmy is much more current.
I’d be interested to see where Conan fit in as well..
Jimmy has been the best for years. It’s great that everyone is starting to see that.
Kimmel is the worst. We live in mediocre times. Indeed.
Thanks a lot.
I had a nielson box in my house for a while and I asked them why the cable co. Just couldn’t track what we people were watching they said there wouldn’t be a way for the cable co to track ages which is all the networks care about.
Wow Jimmy congrats and well deserved. If ABC was smart they would cancel Nightline which has become mismanaged with all of the born again religious agenda stories ( who is running the journalistic integrity over there) and put Kimmel on at 1135 to go head to head. Kimmel is the future of late night his network should support him and see the future.
Will ABC, buoyed by Kimmel’s success, move him up to 11:30 P.M. (Eastern/Pacific) and either dump “Nightline”, or move it back to 12:30 A.M. ET/PT??
I love Jimmy Kimmel Live, over all the other late night shows
Jimmy Kimmel should be the king of late night. His show is much funnier, far more inventive and entertaining than any of his competitors. Letterman and Leno are so boring and their interview styles are so predictable and safe. It seems as if the guests have more fun on Kimmel than on the other shows IMO.
doesn’t nightline do better than everybody? viewers and demo
NERD ALERT
Remember when Carson ruled late night with over 20 million viewers all by himself? Yea, neither do I
Simmons!
