EXCLUSIVE: Kirk Douglas will join Spartacus: Vengeance creator-producer Steven S. DeKnight and star Liam McIntyre at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on May 31 to discuss the cultural impact of Spartacus then and now. Douglas, who starred in the 1960 feature film, just had his book I Am Spartacus! Making A Film, Breaking The Blacklist published by Open Road Media. “I made a film about freedom at a time when freedom was in jeopardy and a blacklist had been in effect in Hollywood for more than a decade,” Douglas says. “There are parallels in today’s political climate, which is why a hero like Spartacus still resonates.” Some called for a boycott of the original film because Douglas gave screenwriting credit to blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo. The Starz series Spartacus: Vengeance recently completed its second season after Spartacus: Blood And Sand and prequel Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena. The latter two editions have been airing in more than 150 countries.

Spartacus (BLOOD AND SAND, and GODS OF THE ARENA) was an absolutely brilliant show. My friends and I were OBSESSED! The writing, the world, the characters. TV doesn’t get better. Never knew what was coming next, every story line landed perfectly.
However, VENGENCE was just horrible. Bad writing, ridiculous premises, and worst of all… Liam.
I know replacing Andy was impossible, and I’m sure Liam’s a great guy, but he’s painfully miscast.
10 years too young, no physical presence, and so clean cut it’s ludicrous. (Is this Spartacus or a commercial for OLD NAVY?)
Whats worse, the producers must have known they made a mistake, and tried to make up for it by forcing Liam to OVER ACT. No fun, no twinkle, no charm. Just awkward tough guy moments that either fell flat or would have been laughable if they weren’t so sad. (sigh)
Maybe STARZ knows the show is wretched and can fix it… I honestly don’t think it can get worse.
i’m sorry to say i agree with every word. The storylines were terrible compared th the previous 2 series and, yes,Liam is too young and clean cut looking.
Have you lost mind?! Liam is amazing. Nobody could “replace” Andy, and I think one of the reasons why Liam was such a great choice was because they weren’t trying to find a lookalike, or someone to mimic the work Andy created. I was incredibly skeptical going into the second season, but imo, Liam embodies the heart of the character in a way that goes beyond physical looks. To each their own, obviously, but I believe in Liam’s Spartacus. And apart from Mira’s untimely (and rather unnecessary) death, I think “Vengeance” had some of the best writing and character arcs of any season.
I agree. If Liam McIntyre was complete stiff, sorely lacking the nuanced performance of Andy Whitfield. Equally as bad was the new Naevia, a dreadful actress whose sub-par looks would not have any man pining for her.
Wow, you are so wrong on so many levels I don’t know where to begin. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion. It doesn’t stop me from calling you an unintelligent viewer though. Do yourself a favor and QUIT WATCHING!
GRATITUDE!
Jupiter has truly lost his balls. Liam is more impressive than Andy.
Liam and Steven:
Is there any chance of getting Kirk a part on the show?
Even if it’s a small one, a la Stan Lee in the Marvel productions, it would be nice to thank him for such an iconic production as his version.
@Jupiter lost it’s balls. Sorry you don’t like Liam as Spartacus. I thought he was fantastic. You should complain about him anonymously on the internet like a 13 year old girl would. Here’s an option you Liam haters can’t seem to get through your think skulls. Don’t like him, don’t watch, pretty damn simple. Stay classy!
Couldn’t agree more. What is it with all these Antipodeans anyway? Liam, sorry you will never live up to the high standards produced by Andy. My choice would have been Alex O’Loughlin.
Really and truly a work of art. Andy was Spartacus but Liam gave it a hell of a go. Nice work.
My comment was also 4 Jupiter
I agree with starky my thoughts exactly! Have you lost mind! Liam is amazingly talented! Handsome as hell! I thought the storyline was seamless from blood and sand to vengeance! Liam great job can’t wait for season 3 and I hope for more seasons to come! Hats of to Steven for the edge of your seat story lines! And wow Kirk Douglas joining the panel! Toast to that!
Frankly, I think Liam grew into the part, I think we had to get used to him just as he had to become Spartacus, and that he did. He made that his role, RIP Andy, you were great, however so is Liam, it also helps that he is taller. I only wish that after making us wait so long, they there would be more episodes, (at least 14).
I agree totally with Olivia and Starky. Liam did an incredible job and to me bought so much more depth to the role. He is gorgeous and very talented – and I love the fact that he didn’t come in and copy Andy but made the role his own. I have an enormous amount of respect for this man – especially for having the guts to even take on his role. Great job Liam and Steven and Starz! Can’t wait for the new season!
I’d have to say that comparing Liam to Andy is totally unfair. They both brought their own amazing rendition of Spartacus to life. While I was a bit iffy on Liam as ‘Vengence’ began, he grew on me as the season progressed. Unfortunately as far as their writing is concerned, there is only so much you can do with the language they are writing with, and some of the lines seemed repetitive. That doesn’t take away from the story telling as far as I’m concerned. It was going to be a difficult season to transition anyway, as Batiatus was dead, and many of our other favorite characters died at the seasons end (Ashur, Enimaus, Lucretia, Asher, Glaber,Ilithyia, and Mia). Not to mention Liam filling the shoes of Andy. But it had to be done this way for the story to continue.
ANDY IS SPARTACUS but LIAM did the best he could do; he was not that bad who knows he may get better.
I myself loved every bit of the shows, yes Andy was the best but god love him, he wanted the show to go on and he gave his blessing for the show to go on. Liam gave his own to Spartacus and I Loved how the other characters grew this season, crixus, agron, ashur, gannicus, all of them! I wish we could see the kirk douglas and Liam mcintyre and steven deknight meeting! Keep up the good work on the show and I cant wait for january 2013!
