EXCLUSIVE: Liam Neeson is set to star as Matt Scudder in A Walk Among the Tombstones, the Scott Frank-scripted adaptation of the Lawrence Block book series. Frank will direct his script. The movie will begin production February, 2013 in New York and is the first film in a new three-year deal between Exclusive Media and Cross Creek Pictures to develop, finance and produce at least two films per year, with budgets up to $65 million. Each of the films will be released through Universal Pictures, which has a slate distribution deal with Cross Creek.
In A Walk Among the Tombstones, Neeson plays Scudder at the time he’s an ex-NYPD cop and unlicensed private detective and recovering alcoholic. He’s hired to find the kidnapped wife of a drug dealer. In the process, he discovers that the kidnappers have done this before and it has led to brutal murders. Block’s Scudder character was previously played by Jeff Bridges in the Hal Ashby-directed 8 Million Ways To Die. Double Feature Films partners Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher will produce with Danny DeVito and his Jersey Films. Exclusive Media’s Alex Walton will sell overseas rights at Cannes.
The funding deal was made by Exclusive Media co-chairmen Nigel Sinclair and Guy East and Cross Creek president Brian Oliver after the two companies joined forces on several movies, and most recently Rush, the Ron Howard-directed and Peter Morgan-scripted drama about the rivalry between ’70s Formula One champion drivers Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).
“We have long enjoyed a fulfilling business partnership with Brian and his team at Cross Creek, creating success with The Ides Of March, The Woman in Black and now Rush,” Exclusive Media’s Sinclair and East said in a statement. “We feel very confident to formalize and strenghten our development, financing and production arrangement with Brian and we are thrilled to start this new chapter with such a commercial project.”
The Exclusive Media-Cross Creek arrangement will include a six-figure revolving development fund to generate projects, and they can team on pictures outside those that will be released through Universal. Exclusive Media COO brokered the deal with Cross Creek’s Oliver and Exclusive Media president of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions Tobin Armbrust will oversee it.

he is such a badass
this sounds like a really cool, serious thriller.
cant wait
This is a hell of a book, and Neeson will be terrific in it. Hope it stays smarter and doesn’t veer towards the raging-ass-kicking he’s been doing lately. He’s fun to watch doing that, but the book is much smarter.
Hopefully Lawrence Block had some input with the script. It’s one of my favorite Matthew Scudder books. 8 Million Ways To Die was horrible as a movie. Hal Ashby even changed the locale from New York City to LA. Just a complete trainwreck.
Blocks books are great. 8 million ways didnt stay true to the book. If they stick to the book, this will be great.
Scott Frank’s brother-in-law, the very underrated Phil Joanou, was attached to direct this for years. It’s a terrific book, and I hope Frank does it justice.
A fine man, a decent human being, I grieve with him on the loss of his wife, I too have lost Family.May God Keep You In The Hollow Of His Hand, may she be waiting for you. And Mr. Neeson, this is very Gaelic, may they all be waiting for you, in My Fathers House Are Many Mansions.
One of those actors you could watch watching paint dry. Anything Liam does seems to be worth watching because of his presence alone.
SCUDDER..! Finally.
Please, please don’t do what Ashby and Oliver Stone did. Scudder isn’t generic, the character and his story are very specific. The details of his alcoholism are very important, as well.
Neeson is one of the few actors who could capture Scudder’s damage and decency and terrible sadness… This material could bridge prestige and commercial audiences. A two-fisted story that also speaks to the human condition. In other words, awards worthy.
The Scudder novels and short fiction are also worth reading. Lawrence Block isn’t a Princess, his writing is very smart, clean and driven.
Scudder novels have long been acclaimed as perhaps the best noir detective fiction ever written. Each novel has its own flavor, and A Walk Among the Tombstones is possibly the darkest of the series. It’d definitely a strong choice to burst upon the scene. Others will chronicle Scudder’s descent into, and struggling recovery from alcoholism through Alcoholics Annonymous meetings. Before this series is up, you can expect Neeson to pick up his first Academy Award.
The Scudder books are the best of the modern day hard boiled detective stories. Always thought the series would have been a perfect fit for HBO. Harrison Ford was set to do this part a half dozen yrears ago with Joe Carnahan directing. When I saw Neeson’s name I figured Carnahan was still attached. aor HBO. Frank knows this genre – the story itself is quite vicious with a terrific character in the kidnapper. Should be good.
wow, man. I kinda forgot about this project. Harrison Ford was attached to this for the longest time, it seemed. That was like, I dunno, like 10 years ago, maybe?
I was pretty disappointed when the project never materialized with Ford, but I’m looking forward to it getting made nonetheless. And Liam Neeson is cool too.
Thumbs up to the entire project…..the Actor, the story, the producers…..they all are worthy and deserving of success!!
