EXCLUISVE: True Blood co-executive producer Mark Hudis will take the reins of the hit HBO vampire drama if it gets renewed for a sixth season. With True Blood creator/executive producer Alan Ball stepping down as showrunner at the end of the upcoming fifth season, Hudis would be upped to executive producer/showrunner for Season 6 as part of an overall deal he has signed with HBO. The two-year pact also includes a development component.
Hudis has been on True Blood for the past two seasons — last year’s Season 4 and Season 5, which premieres June 10. While his and Ball’s paths previously crossed on the CBS comedy series Cybill, where they co-wrote several episodes during the 1997-98 season, the two first met two decades ago working at trade publication AdWeek. UTA-repped Hudis’ series credits also include Fox’s That ’70s Show and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. While leaving True Blood full-time after Season 5, Ball is staying in business with HBO through his overall deal there. He will continue to be involved in True Blood and also executive produces new series Banshee for HBO sibling Cinemax.

I know I am in the minority here, but True Blood and Game of Thrones have both been epic disappointments. Seriously wasted opportunities. True Blood has grown worse every season culminating in that wiccan nonsense. And Game of Thrones episodes are like bad student films that happen to have great cinematography.
Please do NOT greenlight another season of True Blood…put it out of its misery.
You’re right, Marc. You are in the minority. Life sucks
Not from what i’ve heard he’s not. Life sucks but not as bad as True Blood.
I disagree massively about Game of Thrones. 2nd season is even better than the 1st. Amazing show.
I was a bit worried after the season premiere, but turns out Game of Thrones is awesome this season. True Blood on the other hand was a hot mess, and if it wasn’t for Skarsgard I wouldn’t watch anymore regardless of who runs it.
If there is anything that typifies the fans of True Blood, it’s their ‘loyalty’ and absolute lack of a sense of humor.
I thought True Blood should have been laid to rest after the third season.
I agree wholeheartedly with you. While I’m a loyal fan, I catch myself shaking my head in disbelief of how bad a show can become. I only hope the new Showrunner can breathe life into this mess.
Wait, Nurse Jackie? He worked on that POS?
Ahhhh crap.
I love True Blood and I’ve watched every single episode, but I will admitt that the past season wasn’t that great. I’ll continue watching it, because I love all of the characters. I hope this season is better. As for Game of Thrones the first season was great, but this season is just dragging out.
If you want to see “dragging out,” then try reading the series Game of Thrones is from. It’s awesomely delicious, but you read some real droll stuff in the process of getting to the goodies.
Amazing news. TB needs new life and Hudis is a great fit. His work on 70′s Show was fantastic and he’s written my favorite episodes of True Blood. Smart pick!
Hudis is a great guy to work with. True Blood is tired but not as tired as Boardwalk Empire. That show wore out its welcome so fast. Game of Thrones continues to be inventive and mesmerizing.
carly you are a dummy. boardwalk is incredible and only got more so with its last season.
agree on true blood though – it’s horrible this season and last season was when it definitely took it’s turn downward.
thrones rules.
Mark Hudis is a mensch — and a great writer.
If only more showrunners were like this guy.
TB has had its low points, but still a great show! Hudis has written some great episodes, so i look forward to seeing what he will do next season.
