During the continuing phenom that is The Avengers, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talks with Bloomberg’s Carol Massar on the Disney lot in Burbank. He discusses the company’s future movies including Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and two others he says they haven’t announced yet. Regarding Marvel properties still handled by other studios — Spider-Man and X-Men in particular — Feige notes “as long as they are making them [with] quality, that will be good.” Massar asks if the Disney Studios job is ”something that you’re interested in at all?” Feige replies, “I’ve got a very good job right now. I can’t complain.”

I’m glad he gave Joss credit because I saw The Avengers and it feels like it could have been written in 1978. It has a very old school fun but serious vibe to it where there is a lot of action, but also a lot of character driven story. There was some deep moments in this movie like the stuff with Hawkeye and Natasha. Avengers is the kind of movie movie that Richard Donner or Steven Spielberg would have done in the 1970s. A movie which made you care about the characters as opposed to just blowing stuff up without contet or characterization (Transformers movie). It’s a Transformers movie that is thought provoking and has substance.
The Avengers circa 1978? Here you go:

I hope his comment about “taking risks” will translate into thinking outside of the genre box. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk are the equivalent of modern mythology. They are more then the Action/Adventure genre. I’d love to see ‘Demon in the Bottle’ for Iron Man or ‘Captain America No More’ for Cap on the screen.
The best way to keep people interested in these properties is not to repeat the same tired-storyline over and over. Look at Superman Returns: it wasn’t a bad film; it was just so-faithful to the original there was no point. Look at Iron Man 2 or Spider-Man 3: recycled greatest hits from the first films that weren’t as great the second time around. So, be bold Marvel: do a superhero movie that’s secretly an Oscar Bait Drama, or a Romantic Comedy, or Horror, or Thriller/Suspense.
Superman Returns wasn’t a bad film; it was a terrible film. The plummeting airplane sequence was the only redeemable scene in the entire film.
Iron Man 3 is going to be amazing bcuz it reunites RDJ with Shane Black. The last time they worked together something magical happened. Let’s hope Val Kilmer can slim back down bcuz he’d make the perfect Hank Pym.
Agreed. Superman Returns was horrible. Horrible. I like just about everything Superman-related. I can even find parts in the cheesy Superman III enjoyable. But Superman Returns was completely horrible. Even the plane sequence was stale. Routh was awful. Bosworth was awful. Script was tortuously dull and yet offensive to the characters. An amazing collection of bad ideas and poor casting.
Superman Returns still gets me angry.

There are some great storylines from the Avengers comics that they can use in movies, and it looks like they’re going to use another one for Avengers 2 with Thanos.
I like how they’re doing it, basically making individual super hero movies, and The Avengers is the equivalent for the huge payoff to various storylines including one epic one. It’s kind of equivalent to a Wreslemania or series finale of a TV show type of deal were all storyline feuds can be resolved.
I wish the reporter tried to get some info on the other two films that are planned. With the current Marvel superheros they have access too, they can make another superhero team franchise ‘The Defenders’ which was Hulk, Dr. Strange and Namor. So introduce a Dr Strange movie that was in the works, mention Namor in Avengers 2, and that could be a franchise ready for 2016.
Not sure if they can do this, though. I suspect Namor might be tied in to the Fantastic Four rights, currently owned by Fox. Same goes for Silver Surfer. (Which sucks, because I would LOVE to see a Defenders movie, especially now that they’ve figured out how to use the Hulk on the big screen.)
Fiege mentioned a year or so back that they had gotten the rights to Namor back some time ago, but had never put out any releases about it, since they weren’t sure what, if anything, they’d do with him. But Marvel has the rights backm on that one.
My guesses for the two other films are Ant-Man and Luke Cage. Ant-Man already has a director lined up (Edgar Wright) and there have been rumors about Cage.
Unfortunately, the rights of the Fantastic Four and Daredevil haven’t reverted to Marvel. But Ant-Man would be a nice addition to The Avengers sequel.
I think Luke Cage films plans are on hold, as he’s a character in the AKA: Jessica Jones TV series they’re developing.
Well the fifth film will have to be The Avengers 2. Fourth I imagine will have to be Doctor Strange or Guardians of The Galaxy. Or maybe they finally decide to do Black Panther who they also have the rights to.
Black Panther is really a much easier character to introduce and incorporate into their current movie universe than Doctor Strange. Panther is also more of a perennial Avengers team member than Strange. Strange was not until recently in more Avengers storyline.
Also a lot of the groundwork for Black Panther becoming a part of the team was laid out pretty well in things like Ultimate Avengers 2 and the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated series.
what about deadpool and the runaways
take risks only to be bound by them
I’d love to see Marvel make a Defenders movie with Dr. Strange, Hulk, and Namor next!
Yeah no way that will be next.
Doubt it will be Ant-man either.
glad you commenters don’t work in the industry.
horrible ideas. all of you. no wonder none of you run anything
At the moment, Namor is a Universal property, FYI. No word on whether they actually plan on acting on it. Last time I heard it mentioned was 2 years ago. Ant-Man is taking a back seat to “The World’s End”, so that’s probably not one of the other two. My guesses would be Dr Strange and possibly Luke Cage, to give Hulk someone else to play with.
I heard that Ant-Man is in some form of development at Marvel. They could use him in a film so that he is also incorporated into The Avengers sequel.
Hopes for the two unnamed films: Iron Fist ( Martial Arts + Hero could be cool *IF* done well), DR. Strange ( a 3D movie if there ever was one). I’m not keen on the much talked about ANT-MAN. Who Cares about him! but anyways, in all reality they are probably going to make movies about Characters that can go right into Avengers 2 or 3. Why bother with anything Else? Take Risks with casting. Actually, I think it’s kinda risky to go the Thanos route already. After Green Lantern, I don’t much care for heroes in Space.
Too much spin, just say you wish you had Spider-Man. Would it really cause so much backlash?
Though I guess if you want the rights back from Sony and Fox, you want to make it seem like you couldn’t care less and you won’t pay top dollar for them.
I agree with Kate – Superman Returns is too reverential to the 1978 film but as a film it is way ahead of a lot of other superhero films of the last few years in terms of story and production qualitya which includes a couple of The Avengers precursor films and definitely Spider-Man 3. And I loved The Avengers……….but it doesn’t mean that Iron Man 2 isn’t completely dead weight.
One of the films will be ANT MAN. He is actually one of the founding members of the Avengers, but he’s a tricky character to pull off and seem hokey.
Marvel just hit it out of the park with this movie. Its insanely fun. Every character gets their moment and they finally show how the Hulk should be used. I don’t think they should have him in his own movie. Have him show up in the other movies here and there for a helping hand but 2 hours of Hulk smash could be too much. This was probably the best PURE comic book movie I’ve ever seen. The original Superman is still the Godfather but Hollywood has finally made a film that surpasses that film in almost every way. One question though for you guys over on the west coast and in the industry….why wouldn’t marvel put The Amazing Spiderman trailer on this movie? That movie actually looks good and they may have gotten it right, but they really missed a chance to show the masses.
As a Marvel Thor fan since the JIM of August 1962, I’m particularly looking forward to Thor 2. The early indications are that it will be a bit more cosmic – but I think all this means is that it will involve all of the nine worlds of Asgardian cosmology.
I would to know more about the “two other” movies and am hoping that a Dr Stephen Strange movie will feature at some point. Earth’s “sorceror supreme” is both a very interesting and very powerful character
Given the massive early success of the Avengers, an Avengers 2 movie seems almost inevitable. When they are ready for it.
Will the Marvel “bubble” burst at some point. Possibly. It’s hard to say – but not I think any time soon.

I’ve written a solid collection of Marvel (espec Thor) fan fiction, why not check it out? http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1276881/David_Scholes
Namor is a mutant, so that is unfortunately out. Fox owns it in perpetuity.
It’d be fascinating to see them produce and market a female superhero movie.
Don’t hold your breath — the company was bought because of their laser-like focus on younger men.
Sorry i have to disagree, wheddon is no where near as talented as circa 70s spielberg orDick Donner. No way no How
Joss Whedon is just as good as Spielberg but completely different. Where Spielberg focuses on special effects and emotion, Whedon focuses on witty intellect. You really can’t compare them because their styles are completely different. Honestly I prefer Whedon. I love old movies like ET, but this was more fun. His timing is perfect. Hulk just whacking Thor was perfect.
Agree with both JD2 and Rex. The Defenders is a great idea. Scarlett Johansson and “Black Canary” could knock it out of the park but everybody remembers “Catwoman” with Halle Berry – I mean, they remember that it flopped not the movie itself. In “The Avengers” Black Canary interacts with everybody. Each movie could have a different male superhero, what they did with the villains as guest stars on the old Batman series. Hulk in one, Green Arrow in another, etc. Done well if you don’t think “younger men” wouldn’t flock to “Black Canary” – the opposite sex has always been one of the most crucial parts of the comic book formula. Comic books worship strong women in my opinion. Start with Lois Lane. Black Canary (and Johansson) were a blast in “The Avengers.” As was everybody.
Namor aka Sub-Mariner is problematical same as Aquaman. It would be unbelievably expensive to do the underwater scenes so they look realistic, practically impossible which is why those two will most likely never be done live-action. They have to remain in the animated realm where it’s much easier and cheaper. Ant Man will bomb nobody cares about him it’s a waste of money he’s a stupid hero. My guess is they never make that one.
