It’s still expected to be the #1 North American film for the third straight week. And now Marvel’s The Avengers currently stands as the #9 film of all time globally, passing Disney’s Alice In Wonderland and LucasFilm’s Star Wars Episode 1 (not adjusted for higher ticket prices or premium 3D or inflation). The film also just became the highest domestic grossing film of 2012, passing Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games in just 12 days of release. And it’s the 13th highest grossing domestic release of all time. Avengers’ cumulative performance to date is international $646.8M and domestic $395.7M for a worldwide total of $1.042.4B.

top 3 overrated movies of all time avatar, titanic and avengers….congrats to mediocre films
Seems like there’s a lot of people who’ll disagree with your definition of “mediocre.”
I’d like to know what your idea of an above-average film is.
Don’t worry, I’m sure the Nicholl committee will love your offbeat script about some bearded unemployed hipster dealing with his daddy issues.
It must *really* annoy you (for some reason) that THE AVENGERS is actually a good movie, huh?
OK mister elitist. John, why don’t you go away.
The Avengers is not an artsy film, but the highest grossing movies of all time could never be expected to be that. As a piece of pop cinema entertainment, I would love to know what you think is higher quality or more deserving of success than this monumental achievement of a movie!
cos john carter was a much better film? and to be fair, avengers was much better than avatar.
Said “John Carter”
.. get your head out of your ass, you mewling quim.
Congrats! Really earned it. Never seen a better film without a main character.
Saw this today. Bored silly. Zero effort plot. The audience was eating it up though, some giggling millenials in the row ahead of me.
Joss Whedon is a great writer and I hope he gets the chance to direct more Hollywood movies.
Shortcuts was a way better movie with no main character- maybe Lily Tomlin should have turned her car into a hovercraft after hitting the kid…
It’s amazing what can happen when someone makes a film that people WANT to see.
Haters gonna hate. This movie was awesome.
Haha by John carter. Too funny
Avengers was awesome! 90% of people agree. You build a franchise with good characters , then wrote a movie with a solid script, and get someone who is great at story, like Joss, and you have yourself an awesome movie. It deserves the box office, for being an old school blockbuster. Not just loud transforming robots who fight in action scenes you don’t understand, or care too, because the script is so bad.
I never post, but had to respond to the smarmy comments about the film.
“not adjusted for higher ticket prices or premium 3D or inflation”
In other words, THE AVENGERS has moved up a list that has no real validity or substance.
“no real validity”
Aside from the fact that it earned that cash. Dozens of movies have been in the same position with higher ticket prices, 3d and inflation that haven’t raked in a billion dollars at the B.O.
It is making money because it is a film that people want to see. It’s the same as Gone with the Wind, E.T., Lion King, Titanic, Pirates, Transformers, Dark Knight and Avatar. Those aren’t all great movies, but they deserved every dime they made.
Any back end deals? Is the budget of 250 m correct? Will Disney make a 700m – taxes profit? Will the film cast return or are they stuck in their contracts with no participation deals?
Glad to hear it is expected to beat Battleship this weekend. “Awful” doesn’t begin to describe how bad that movie looks in the previews.
Excellent fun movie! It should make #1 of all time. Avatar and Titanic were extremely overrated. How they surpassed Jurassic Park in box office sales is absolutely beyond me. I guess hype goes a long way.
Huge respect for Joss. Slaved away in television for two decades, creating some seminal stuff, had a cult film or two, never lost his sense of humor and love for his fans. And now he’s made a billion dollar movie. He deserves it.
And for the record, I loved Avatar and still think Titanic is one of cinema’s timeless accomplishments.
But not John Carter.
