EXCLUSIVE: MGM and Screen Gems has closed a deal with Julianne Moore to play the iconic Margaret White in Carrie, the remake that is being directed by Kimberly Peirce. Now the studio has set Gabriella Wilde for the the role of Sue Snell, the role originated by Amy Irving. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script and Kevin Misher is producing. Chloe Moretz is playing Carrie, the role originated by Sissy Spacek in the Brian DePalma-directed original. ICM and UK-based Tavistock Wood rep Wilde and Moore is repped by CAA and Management 360.

On the hot meter, Gabriella Wilde’s a 10. Can she act? Don’t really care as long as she’s in the opening shower scene!!!!
Remake! Cha cha cha!

This is going to be a tricky one. The script, like the book, is not played even slightly for camp. Margaret White’s character in particular is given a very literal interpretation. As great an actress as Moore is, I’m worried. If she tries to shade this character with even a hint of irony or wit, she’s going to seem like she’s in a different film than everyone else. Unless they can overhaul the script in a way that makes room for the kind of tonal shifting that the original did so well, Moore is going to have to get in there and play defense, like she did in PSYCHO, which means making her role a smaller, quieter, and, unfortunately, thankless one.
Has Julianne Moore ever seen Piper Laurie’s Oscar nominated performance? It’s amazing. Patricia Clarkson tried playing it in the tv remake and no one remembers it because she played it flat/dry/matter of fact.
I’m interested to see the final cut but the original just got it soooo right I don’t see room for improvement.
Poor Chloe. She went from superhero to vampire to werewolf to . . . telekinetic teenager.
Please give this talented actress some real roles.
