EXCLUSIVE: The Killing star Mireille Enos has joined Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth in Devil’s Knot, the Atom Egoyan-directed drama about the West Memphis 3. Enos will play Vicki Hutcheson, the mother of an 8-year-old boy who lives in a run-down house in West Memphis. She becomes an important witness in the murder trial of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley for the killing of three 8-year-old boys found hog-tied in a drainage ditch. Hutcheson, it becomes apparent to investigators, could be the only link between Echols and Misskelley.
As Deadline revealed just after the West Memphis 3 murder defendants were released from prison last summer, The Sweet Hereafter and Chloe director Egoyan came aboard to direct a script that was originally written by Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, the team behind The Exorcism Of Emily Rose.
Firth will play Ron Lax, a private investigator who was the first pro bono supporter of the defendants as they headed to trial in 1993. Lax built one of the most prominent private investigative firms in the Southeast, and offered his services for free to the defendants, who at the time were reviled because of the heinous nature of the crime and the sensationalized reports about devil worship and ritualistic sacrifice. All of that was later proven to be unfounded, after the West Memphis 3 were convicted despite a total absence of physical evidence. Witherspoon is playing Pam Hobbs, the mother of Steven Branch, one of the victims. She initially believed the trio murdered her son and the other two boys but became persuaded they were wrongly accused. An upcoming documentary casts suspicion on her ex-husband Terry Hobbs, who was Steven Branch’s stepfather and who has denied any wrongdoing.
The script is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, an in-depth chronicle of the sensationalized trials. Elizabeth Fowler, Richard Saperstein, Clark Peterson, Christopher Woodrow and Paul Boardman are producing.
Enos was nominated for a Golden Globe and Emmy for her role as detective Sarah Linden in AMC’s ‘The Killing.” She next stars with Josh Brolin, Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling in Gangster Squad, which Warner Bros releases September 7, and alongside Brad Pitt in World War Z, which gets released next summer. She’s repped by CAA and Gartner/Green Entertainment.

The one sided movies and websites about this case leave out the evidence showing why the West Memphis Three were found guilty by a unanimous jury. They plead guilty last year instead of waiting for a trial.
Misskelley confessed three separate times, once with his lawyer present. Misskelley also told two other people about the crime before he was arrested. Baldwin told someone else he committed the crimes. Echols was seen in muddy clothes near the crime scene. Echols is reported to have either told or bragged about the crime to four people before he was arrested.
Echols had a history of psychiatric treatment and psychotic behavior. His reported actions included brutally killing a dog, starting fires at his school, threatening to kill his teachers and parents and stating he liked to drink blood.
Echols’ stated under cross-examination that he was interested in the occult. Echols’ journal contained morbid images and references to dead children.
Read alternative sources about the case. Don’t just believe the one sided movies
You realize the supporters of the West Memphis Three, whom I believe to be guilty, are doing to Terry Hobbs the very thing they accused the police/media of doing to the WM3 — finding them/him guilty by innuendo.
There is far less evidence against Terry Hobbs as there is against the West Memphis 3.
P.S. How is Reese Witherspoon going to be in this when she is MEGA PREGNANT and this movie will begin shooting within a month?
I believe Enos will be as least nominated for a Emmy for best actress for her work in ‘The Killing’. She is absolutely great in that role.
Enos is excellent, yet her performance is undermined almost entirely by awful writing. Here’s hoping AMC cancels The Killing so Enos may move onto proper work.
It annoys me when people say there was ‘evidence’ pointing towards the WM3.
Jessie’s ‘confession’ was a false one which isn’t uncommon – he only has an IQ of 72.
A profiler confirmed there was no evidence of the crime scene being occult related.
The DNA found at the scene was that of Terry Hobbs but it is unclear as to how it was there.
Most of the ‘witnesses’ have since come forward and admitted they were only interested in a reward and went along with what the police said or had been taking plenty of drugs at the time.
Terry Hobbs was the last to see them alive but denies this.
Thank you Zoe, for meeting ignorance with true facts.
Misskelley’s confession was not “false.” Misskelley correctly described the details of the crime that had not been made public. And he told the same basic story in three February 1994 post-conviction confessions. He confessed five different times in all. Three times to the detectives, once to the police and once to his lawyers. Plus he told at least two other people he committed the crimes. Misskelley’s IQ may have been higher, between 84-88. He may have been scoring lower on purpose at the later IQ test. (see the cross-examination of Dr. Wilkins at callahan 8k.)
Many of the witnesses have not “come forward and admitted they were only interested in a reward.” Some statements were verified by lie detector tests or others.
The evidence against Hobbs is very weak. It is much stronger against the West Memphis Three.
You must be Terry Hobbs.
The WM3 admitted their guilt on numerous occasions.
Please don’t believe the hollywood hype. It is disgustingly and egregiously corrupt. If you don’t believe me just ask John Travolta or the surviving Cory.
