MTV‘s comedy series I Just Want My Pants Back will not be coming back for a second season. The project, based on the book by David Rosen, launched to critical praise and strong ratings, which trended down throughout its run. “We’re proud to have aired I Just Want My Pants Back, with its impressive creative pedigree and talented group of actors,” MTV said in a statement. “Many factors go in to determining renewals, however, and ultimately, we decided not to move forward with an additional season of Pants.”
I hear one of the factors that played into MTV’s decision is the network’s large inventory, including upcoming series Inbetweeners, Craig Wright’s Underemployed, Zach Stone in Gonna Be Famous starring young comedian Bo Burnham, and returning shows Awkward and Teen Wolf. I Just Want My Pants Back hails from Doug Liman and Dave Bartis’ Hypnotic and Universal Cable Prods. I hear they will likely shop the show to other networks. Described as an youthful romantic dramedy set in New York City, Pants, which was adapted for TV by Rosen, centers on 22-year-old Jason Strider (Peter Vack) and his friends who grapple with dating, romance and becoming adults. This has been a passion project for Liman who had worked on it for years. It was originally developed for NBC through UMS where Hypnotic was based.

What a disappointment. This show was well written and smart. I think the casting choices were spot on. The show reminded me of older MTV days when MTV treated the viewers like smart, forwarding thinking, youth of America individuals and not Teen Mommies hoping for a paycheck. Best wishes to cast, crew and writers that this finds a new home. CW, Sundance? Scoop this up.
If they can lose Liman there’s a chance of continuing elsewhere. He’s just a liability time and time again. Also Kim Shaw is too old for the part. Peter Vack makes the show what it is.
Well, therein lies the problem. Judging by the shows I’ve seen on MTV, “well written and smart” aren’t exactly in MTV’s wheelhouse.
yeah what the hell I LOVE THIS SHOW!! probably the best scripted show I seen on MTV you want to gain viewers back…not loose them, you guys are not relateable anymore.
I think the CW would be a great home for this show. If ‘Pants’ keptthe numbers it got on MTV on The CW, it would be a hit!
it belongs on the cw because it does. david jannolari is stuck inthe 90s and his taste is just that. doode should have been fired on his second day.
I’m sick over this cancellation. Great show, great cast. Too damned good for MTV.
I agree, it was such a good show.
Darn it, I actually really enjoyed this series. MTV has been making some pretty strong waves in the scripted department (with the obvious exception of “Skins”).
This was a good series. Seems good for CW if they considered retooling this as an hour long show. Other then CW, I don’t see where it could go. Not funny enough (truthfully) to go to Comedy Central (though its in the Viacom family) or racy to go to pay cable like Showtime or HBO (though, it could definitely get dirtier, if the actors were willing to sign nudity clauses). Hope it returns, though, I’m not holding my breath. Disappointment is all that I can say about this decision.
No!!! This was an underrated gem of a show. MTV, come on! It was smart, funny, surprising, and PERFECTLY cast. Really, really hope someone else picks up. CW? Even IFC… FX… come on, somebody pick it up. This was probably my favorite comedy on TV, along with Always Sunny and Curb.
This is pretty dumb. Pants was actually a very funny show and was the brand MTV has wanted to be (but failed at being) for years. I guess they will be the reality network. That “big inventory” of 3 shows is them spinning.
What? Do they realize they are canceling one of the best written and acted shows out there? I am very disappointed; really enjoyed those characters.
I liked Pants and tht it was well cast, written and produced. It had decent numbers and it was on at 11. It’s not like MTV is FX and churning out quality like this. Hello Skins, RJ. Must be something more here.
Really enjoyed this show, but way too racy for 9 PM hour. It’s a 10PM show IMO. Hope they can find a home for it.
Ugh!!! I just want ‘I Just Want My Pants Back’ back!!!
Crap! I loved this show!! I definitely don’t see it fitting well with the CW, it’s too racy…. However, I can definitely see it fitting well with HBO which would give it a change to get more perverse and filty. The actors would certainly need to sign a nudity clause, but if done, I see this fiting well with the network and even being a nice companion to ‘Girls’…. Hope it finds a new home – way too witty, smart and fantastically filthy to just disappear!!
Why would huge bigshot creators like Liman go to a basic cable net like MTV if they aren’t given the time to let a show grow? They can do that exact same thing at a network and make twice as much. I tht the whole point of going basic cable was the understanding that shows would be nurtured. This earned at least another shot.
Wow. MTV used to mean MUSIC TELEVISION. Cancel all this garbage and stop promoting false advertising. I thought Disney or Nick catered to 9 year old morons but now MTV too. The VMAs are coming up. Ironic for a “network” that doesn’t air videos. Has anyone seen the nominees? MTV, you are responsible for the downfall of American television. What a joke.
This is a stupid, stupid move on MTV’s part. Quality writing, solid actors, and an audience MTV needs.
FX or Comedy Central needs to pick the show up stat.
Of the four shows I really look forward to watching on TV (GIRLS, Happy Endings and New Girl being the others), Pants was definitely my favorite. Peter Vack and Kim Shaw were so, so good, as were all the supporting characters. Damn…what is MTV thinking? We get two Jersey Shore spinoffs, 16&Pregnant and Teen Wolf instead of a genuinely original, funny, smart comedy? This show was always too good for this network. I really hope it finds a new home, and fast.
That show was written so well, it really had heart. Putting it in the time-slot after Jersey Shore was a huge mistake. The strange thing is, the reviews were all so positive – and MTV just killed it. Huge mistake. Hope to see the show go on.
This was a totally solid show, cleverly written amd well cast. On par with the best they’ve ever done. MTV does not support and nurture. Here comes snooki.
TBS should pick it up. Way more on brand for them than Cougartown, but that shit has sailed.
I’m so bummed about this cancellation. Pants was one of the few shows I watch on TV, and frankly I always thought it was too good for MTV. Why not give an original, funny, smart show a shot to prove itself in a second season? That’s what HBO or Showtime would do. Shame on you, MTV. And you say you want quality scripted shows. Good luck.
This was an awesome show and I am heartbroken that MTV has canceled it. The actors were amazing and the writing was witty and smart!! It needs to be picked up by another network it’s THAT good, please give us MORE pants!!!
Mtv says they want quality edgy original voices first. Think this says the opposite. Every one in the industry liked this show and writers talked about how they wanted to sell their version of it.
This show was really great and though it was a comedy felt very true to life. Better than Girls in a lot of ways, especially as far as depicting young people in NY without all the privilege.
Yeah, I loved this show. I am so bummed. Peter Vack was fantastic, an amazing actor, such a cutie. Can shows really move around to new networks. I really hope so. This is bad news.
Attention HBO execs- “Girls” and “Pants” would be a great one hour block on your network!
