After the steady stream of new series pickups and renewals over the past five days, NBC cleaned house, canceling the bubble series that had not been renewed yet and passing on the pilots that had not been picked up to series yet. The series getting axed officially include comedies Are You There, Chelsea, BFF and Bent as well as drama Awake, which showed some spunk with a ratings increase last night. It proved to be a case of too little too late.

a real shame about awake truely great television
I can’t believe NBC decided not to pick up Midnight Sun, oh wait, I can, cause NBC is run by stupids.
Hope it’s shopped to another network, as well as Awake.
Harry’s Law? A much better show than Up All Night or Whitney.
But then again, so were Bent and BFFs.
Thanks for the update Nellie. Not surprising at all that Awake was cancelled-only that it took so long. Am a little saddened about Bent. Was actually pretty funny. If Nbc was smart they would have renewed Bent for a full season, that is,if they were seriously into having some sort of a comedy block on another night besides Thursdays. But,as we all know Nbc ISN’T smart. Let’s see what other “can’t miss” show they throw up on Thursday nights at 10pm come the fall season. Prime Suspect,The Firm,&,Awake. So far Nbc is 0 for 3 on Thursdays at 10,but,knowing Nbc-I’m sure they’ll take a shot at going 0 for 4. Appreciate the updates Nellie, keep them coming. Thank you.
Can they afford to pick up just 5 new dramas? I don’t know what they might do if 3 of them bomb in the first weeks, which wouldn’t surprise me a lot..
I was hoping to hear from Beautiful People, Bad Girls and Mockingird Lane.. If only I was the scheduler..
No! Where is Beautiful People it was sooo good!
This is horrifying. “Awake” was the best scripted and best acted, most ingenious new show of the year. I mourn.

Is there any chance at all that “Midnight Sun” will be shopped elsewhere? To me, it was one of the most compelling concepts of the pilot season.
What was it about?
Thanks for all those people who *did* tune in for Awake. Best wishes!
Awake is an exceptional drama with superb acting and scripts, and I am very unhappy to hear of its cancellation. I wish the cast and crew success in their future endeavors, and they can certainly look back on this series with unmixed pride in their artistic achievement.
Last night’s episode was pretty revealing!
Nice co-writing, Leonard! Hey, maybe you can convince Netflix to save Awake?
ABC snatch up Downwardly Mobile!
Roseanne wore out her welcome a long time ago. Even the last few seasons of her old series were tired, and the new pilot was produced by the same showrunner from the weaker years of the old show.
That is not really fair. Yes, the final season of Roseanne is truly unwatchable, but every season prior to that is pretty damn solid. I also know a lot of 25 year olds who DVR reruns and watch them daily, I don’t think NBC has any idea what they are doing here.
I’m not one of the 25 year olds the previous poster spoke of, however, I am 21 and have nearly every season of Roseanne. I feel in love with the show in my early teens. The latter seasons were definitely somewhat unbearable. But, the chemistry of the cast was amazing on camera. One of the greatest late 80′s/90′s sitcoms. I would have loved to see a reunion with Roseanne and John Goodman in Downwardly Mobile. I’m not incredibly familiar with the whole television network process, but maybe it can be picked up for next fall. Or, maybe another network will pick it up. Who knows. Maybe I’m holding false hope, but I’m definitely hoping we may still see this show eventually. Could turn out to be a total bust (Roseanne’s Nuts anyone?) But, I think it’s a great concept and would pull in a lot of viewers eager to see John and Roseanne working together again.
So no Susan 313?? WTF
Awake is one of the most intelligent entertaining dramas in recent memory, its a fascinating concept and a terrific psychological analysis of a man desperately trying to hold on to his family at the price of his sanity, that being said sadly it struggled to find an audience on NBC, perhaps due to its dark tone, however there is major potential here for a cable network like FX,TNT,AMC,Cinemax to scoop it up(or even DirecTv like when they picked up DAMAGES). A show like this needs a Niche audience and it can achieve that success on cable. This show is to well executed to die, besides Jason Isaacs does some brilliant acting in it.
I definitely learned my lesson to not get involved in any series on NBC. It’s pointless. Good show, bad show, it doesn’t matter. It’s like Russian Roulette over there. They have no lead ins. They have no sports to push programming, so they can’t tell which shows are good and which are bad. Granted, most are bad but it’s like watching a goat run on a treadmill.
NBC had such promising sounding pilots, but their drama lineup doesn’t sound like much.
Revolution – let’s face it, this will be boring and cancelled quickly (and why not pick up The Frontier if it’s so fun to watch people who don’t have modern technology?)
Do No Harm – could be fun, a thriller type doctor show (not a soap)
Chicago Fire – same idea as an episodic cop show, so that will appeal to men
Infamous – sounds more like an ABC show
And then there are the possible spring shows – Republic of Pirates (could be male-skewing adventure) and 1313 Mockingbird Lane (sounds more ABC to me)
NBC should be making more of a play for the male audience, which watches sports on their network. Maybe that’s what’s behind all the comedy pickups. Are they trying to become The Comedy Channel? I think they would be wiser to build up the adventure aspect of their dramas, and veer away from ABC style fantasy soaps.
I can’t believe the pilots that weren’t made over this stuff. Go back to the scripts they chose from. Shocking what they left on the table.
Bob and Jen truly don’t know what they’re doing. They are so out of touch with the NBC audience (what’s left of it).
Harry’s Law should go to CBS. Awake couldn’t find enough audience because NBC has no shows to launch other shows off of. Smash was a lovable, addictive disaster. They should never have cancelled Prime Suspect.
I think the NBC brass are in way over their heads.
The real surprise is that BENT got picked up to series in the first place. A funny movie or even cable comedy, sure. But a network comedy with 22-24 episodes a season? Nope.
I watched all six episodes of Bent and thought it had potential. The way they treated it though, I’m not sure why they bothered in the first place.
Awake was a wonderful show. Too bad it did not find a following. I hope the series finale wraps everything up for fans.
Of course it’s all a matter of business, but I for one quite liked both Bent and Awake. I also liked Prime Suspect. I also really Like 30 Rock and P&R, both which sound like they could be on the way out. NBC seems to make shows I like but that not enough people watch. Are the ratings super-low for all these series or does NBC just keep hoping for a grass is greener scenario? I know Prime Suspect’s (crappier) replacement The Firm is already gone, so that didn’t seem to go so well.
Also, I watched all the above shows on Hulu Plus. Not sure if that helped or hurt them. Certainly doesn’t feel like the former.
Finally, will answers be revealed for Awake on the (now series) finale? What is the island?! Er, wrong show. What’s his dream deal?
Yes, the ratings were super lower for all of those series. Not one could get over a 2.0 demo consistently. Most are 1.5 or under. Awake was sub 1.0.
NBC is really starting to fall to CW levels.
That sucks about Awake. It’s such a great show. I think it would have been better for cable. Maybe a cable network can pick it up. But I doubt it. Which world was real?
This is heartbreaking news for fans of intelligent and emotional television. Last night’s Awake is the best hour of tv I’ve ever seen -Jason Isaacs should win every award in existence for his amazing work. When he broke down and finally felt the weight of all his denial it was devastating. Where else do you see acting like that in the schedules? I don’t understand why more people didn’t watch. I suspect they did but on dvr or online. NBC had better let us see the last two episodes or risk a big backlash from its smarter viewers. Couldn’t a cable station or Netlflix or Directtv pick this up? If not somebody better put Isaacs back on screen soon! Preferably with fewer clothes on!
I am so upset right now, tears are coming to my eyes. These are my thoughts exactly. How can they cancel this?!!!!!
Why didn’t I watch? I tried to watch. I do not want to watch a sad show about a grieving man who either has a dead son, or a dead wife, or he’s dead, or everybody’s dead, or he’s crazy, or he’s in a coma. There isn’t any version of this that attracts me.
What about Harry’s Law? Is it still alive? i am one of the 8 million fans hoping so!!
And what about Studio 60? Was that ever officially canceled?
What about Harry’s Law and agreed ABC should grab Downwardly Mobile!
Awake was the best show on TV. Too bad.
Can Chelsea Handler move back to wherever she is from now.
Ladyfriends is perfect for ABC. It belongs over there considering they traded Minnie Driver to NBC for Kal Penn.
I was really enjoying the last few episodes of Awake. I’m glad I stuck with it. Very enjoyable cast -and the series seemed to be picking up steam. I won’t miss the comedies NBC cancelled today -but I will miss Awake.
what a bummer. I really liked BFF and Bent.
