It was a rare move to plug a competitor’s scoop in the hotly contested TV news biz. NBC News interrupted its regular programming today to tell viewers that President Obama told ABC News that he is now fully in favor same-sex marriages. Anchor Brian Williams came on to announce the president’s new stance at 12:08 PM PST (see video below). ABC broke into its programming earlier to make the announcement. CBS and Fox did not. Obama’s announcement comes one day before he heads to Hollywood for a multi-million dollar fundraiser at George Clooney’s house and one week before another with the openly gay Ricky Martin and the LGBT Leadership Council:
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

More importantly, does he support Gay divorce?
I know you’re being facetious, but that’s an actual concern that needs to be weighted. If same-sex marriage isn’t recognized in a state, then same-sex divorce isn’t either. I dated a guy that was broken-up-from but still married to his partner, but couldn’t get divorced because neither currently lived in a state where same sex marriage (and therefore same sex divorce) was recognized (turns out it’s easier to get a marriage license if you’re from out of state than it is to legally end the union).
Never understood the big deal here. Now everyone can have a spouse tell them to get up and do things around the house on Saturday!
YES! This means the fund raiser at Clooney’s house is still on!
So what are his plans to to make same sex marriage legal? Is he going to try and amend the Constitution? Or will he be smart and let the states handle it themselves?
The majority should not be able to vote on the rights of the minority.
Or would you like a state’s voters to be allowed to strip away racial, gender, or religious rights by a majority vote?
Marriage is not a right though.
Actually, yes, it is. Pretty famous Supreme Court decision about it several decades old.
Marriage shouldn’t dealt with by the Federal government OR the states. Civil unions, yes. But marriage should take place within one’s religion.
No biggie. I have always supported gay marriage. Everyone has an equal right to be miserable.
Why is this breaking news or did NBC just want to take the air out of ABC’s interview??? I don’t get it.
And Obama just lost the election. You liberals really have to stop talking to yourselves. Here’s a little factoid for you, there have been 30+ ballots where the question of gay marriage has appeared. Of those, ALL OF THEM, including California and other liberal states, have voted AGAINST same-sex marriage. That’s right, not one came out IN FAVOR of same-sex marriage.
This was just a dumb political move by Obama. Liberals will be happy, but liberals represent 20% of the population and all of them were going to vote for Obama anyway.
Say hello to President Romney, Obama is finished.
You might be right.. which is scary, but true, but at least Obama will have the piece of mind now that he’s on the right side of history going forward.
Long term he’s helping this public conversation continue… and he will help move the needle… maybe to the point that you’ll be proved wrong come November. It’s not easy to unseat a sitting president. Kerry couldn’t unseat Bush, because Kerry was boring and sucked…. Romney feels like John Kerry in the boring suckiness categories, so not sure anti-gay marriage voters are going to be enough to take down an international “rock star” like Obama.
The president opinion “evolved” because it was an election year and Biden opened his mouth and forced the issue. The president is only on the right side of trying to get elected.
California voted down same sex marriage because African Americans overwhelmingly are against it and there was a record turn out of African Americans in the 2008 presidential election. Obama knows identity politics rule and Blacks will support him 9 to 1 because he’s Black and, to a lesser extent, liberal.
Agreed.
And moving into the general election Mitt Romney is actually going to have a very difficult job positioning himself against Obama on this one. Yeah, plenty of scare-tactic attack ad fodder in the swing states, but rhetorically Mitt’s not coming out of this dialogue looking either strong or smart. How many times can he say “man AND a woman” without sounding like a retarded third grader… Obama has proven that as a candidate he actually CAN make nuance work for him. Mitt’s a spineless loser and a far weaker candidate, and I’m cautiously optimistic Obama’s bravery and principles on this issue will ultimately benefit him come November.
All Romney has to say is that like Obama he believes this should be a state issue.
But that “spineless loser” is going to rout Obama in November! Most of the undecided vote in past Presidential elections goes with the challenger. Look it up! Prediction: Romney 56% Obama 43% Green Party 1%. And Obamacare gets repealed and Keystone gets approved!! Thank God!!
Yeeeesss, the cardboard cutout will surely save the day, right?
Please. And don’t you mean “Romneycare”…?
If he is really your guy, you should probably know a little more facts about him, no?
Oh wait, facts! What are those??
Wishful thinking babe. Obama will beat Romney and now he has the gays fully on his side. Romney is a joke, even worse then W if that’s even possible.
Oh, you are so SMART!
Right, because those same people who have a problem with gay marriage were GOING to vote for him until he made this announcement, and now they’re going to switch their vote, gosh darn it!!
Sorry pal, but the people who vote “no” on gay marriage typically are the same people ignorantly calling him a socialist and questioning his birth. You know, geniuses like you.
This issue is why the GOP is bleeding party members to the Libertarians. They don’t care about issues of sexual orientation. 50% of the country wants everyone to marry the person they choose. That number will continue to grow. I doubt it will lose the election for him. There are many more issues that affect people than someone else’s love life.
Really 20% liberal??? Then how come all elections are pretty much always decided by people who are in the middle of the political spectrum. If 20% is all the liberal vote accounts for then guess what, true conservatives probably don’t account for much more than that.
And I am sorry but restricting the rights of a portion of the population doesn’t just make you a conservative, it also makes you an A-hole. Just because majorities don’t want to see gay marriage happen it doesn’t mean that they’re right. Government is supposed to protect everyone. This isn’t some whether we should allow people to hunt deer on Tuesdays kind of law. This affects the lives of many people. Many people who can not and will not be able to gain the full benefits that come with a relationship in most states unless they are married. I for one, don’t care if anyone gets married, it’s an institution that teaches people to be lazy and take their partner for granted but much like I don’t want a black man to be arrested for marrying a white woman in the south, I don’t want two men or two women to be barred from expressing their relationship in a way that makes them happy and feel protected. And yes I just totally equaled being gay with being black or with being a person. Go ahead… get angry.
Congrats, Hollywood. It only took your Messiah 4 years in office to finally let you know that he’s cool if you wanna legally hook up. LMAO. Mind you, not that he’s going to (can) do anything about it, but you know, it’s the thought that counts. Classic liberalism 101 — as long as it makes you feel good, that’s the important thing. Results? Bah! Don’t be a downer, man!
Amend the constitution an make it legal across the board!
About freaking time, Obama! Imagine if JFK had gone through his entire presidency standing behind “Separate but Equal” only to come to the realization that he might have been on the wrong side of that issue. Glad he finally said it publicly. Kind of feel like he was playing religious politician for the last 5 years but realized public sentiment has changed… as have polling numbers, and he better suck it up and not be an A-hole.

A constitutional amendment would need to go through Congress and that’ll never happen in the current (Religious Conservative/Tea Party) climate.
And if Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage costs him the election – so be it. He did the right thing.
Yeah…not so much, actually.
The upcoming election, like the last one, will be decided by independent voters, who tend not to be very socially conservative. This announcement isn’t going to cost Obama many votes — folks who oppose same-sex marriage have many reasons not to vote for Obama already — and it will force Romney farther to the right as he stumbles over himself to bleat opposition to same-sex marriage.
Moreover, with this announcement, Obama ‘pivots’ away from this week’s job report. I don’t think Romney can avoid this issue as a talking point as his convention approaches, even though he’d be smarter to pound away on the unemployment rate. (It’s a trap, Mitt!)
Then again, there are many of us who are affluent, straight and financially-conservative who will rally around someone who promotes tha core American values of “Liberty and Justice for all.
You go, Barry!
The right to marriage is already in the Constitution. Equal Protection clause, 14th Amendment. Per the Supremes, Loving v Virginia, 1972
@john carter(you from Mars?)-that was extremely creative.Loved/hated your movie by the way.
Odd that Ricky Martin performed at GW Bush’s inauguration in 2000
I heard NBC wanted Chuck Todd to explain to viewers what was going on, hence why they broke into their programming. Chuck Todd is a doofus like the rest of those NBC numbskulls. Why would you break into programming to hype another network’s exclusive interview?
Think the bigots wouldn’t have voted for him anyway.Won’t make that much of a difference Romney comes across as a major dunce who has no principles.Wait till the debates!
Yea, much better a radical vocal MINOR minority destroy the Rights of everyone else.
Obama: “Marriage is NOT a civil Right.”
He is correct. Beyond that; marriage HAS ALWAYS been between OPPOSITE sexes. Even the Romans during their Bacchanal infused insanity period, right before their collapse, did not allow it. They of course make San Francisco residents look like amateurs when it comes to “lifestyle choices.”
Mark wrote, ” much better a radical vocal MINOR minority destroy the Rights of everyone else.”
How exactly is the right to heterosexual marriage being destroyed? Crap, straight marriage all over the country is doooooomed!
Sorry, Mark, but you asked for it.
Under Roman law, anyone could bequeath anything they liked to anyone else (unless they were married according to a very arcane set of rules called “confarreatio”) and no one paid taxes to the government. Thus, in the “Roman Bacchanal” you refer to there was already an existing solution to one of the real inequities of limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples: tax and survivor benefits.
As to the “ALWAYS,” yeah…no. A long list of ancient and modern peoples have sanctified and socially acknowledged same-sex MARRIAGES, including, without limitation: the ancient Thebans (Google “Sacred Band”), the Achaemenid Persians, the Lakota, Cheyenne and Nez Perce Native American Tribes, many Polynesian and Micronesian peoples…AND VIRTUALLY EVERY GOD-DAMNED COUNTRY IN EUROPE, YOU ASS!
As for the Romans…Caligula married his horse Incitatus, for Goodness Sake.
I’m male, but I don’t think I should have more rights than people of other genders (I’m not convinced that there are only two).
I’m white, but I don’t think I should have more rights than folks of other racial backgrounds.
I’m straight, but I don’t think…you see where I’m going with this, bro?
If sentiment has changed, it hasn’t, but if it has; then why have 43 states said that “same sex” marriage is NOT allowed. Oh yes, even the radically left wing California did that.
Why would any of them interrupt regular programming for this? Nobody believed he was really against gay marriage, especially considering he said he was for it in ’96.
So everyone has the vapors now because he has evolved into the position he publicly stated 16 years ago. Nobody, but nobody ever thought he was against it, but he lacked the stones to admit it and risk losing the black vote which is solidly against gay marriage. Now he’s going to assume they are either voting for him or not at all, and he needs to shore up his white base and pick up the fundraising pace.
Notice he said it was his personal opinion only, meaning he won’t lift a finger to move the issue forward. The bare minimum to get a lot of free publicity, the MSM anchors wetting themselves, and take the spotlight off the lowest labor force participation rate since the Great Depression.
Actually, this is Obama’s personal position. He is still in favor of individual states deciding. He will not endorse directly in his role of president. Just typical pandering. Instead of leading, he is chasing votes
My problem with this issue is that religious groups who refuse to perform the ceremonies will be sued violating the Constitution IMO. Persecution can be a two-way street.
1. I applaud the sentiment but that’s all it is. Actions speak louder than words. He could have done the exact same thing for years now, without any programming being broken into, and he didn’t. Speaks volumes in my opinion. To have that power and not exercise it about something so elemental as it relates to one’s character (this is how Romney will be judged on the matter – and should be) for a Democrat I consider inexcusable. George Clooney has not done the same. Quite the opposite.
2. Finessing the African American and gay votes in order to distract from the pocketbook issues highlighted in the past couple of weeks…America is a lot more sharp on reading media than Obama and Plouffe think they are.
3. Irrespective of the sentiment I just don’t buy it. The whole thing. The thinking while sitting at the table with his family. Plus he pulled out one of his “go to” moves…Sascha and Malia! Go further with that…
4. …if you add it all up Professor Obama staged another one of his “teachable moments” while combining it with political expediency – but this one was for African Americans. Spike Lee has been very voluble about something specific as it relates to African Americans. That they’re not a “monolith” of thoughts and opinions and don’t deserve to be treated as such and to do so is a symptom of prejudice enacting in order to finesse, control, marginalize, dispose of. So why does the president consistently try to do exactly that with African Americans? I would find that condescending, insulting, demeaning. I also found it interesting that he elected to speak for his wife regarding her beliefs on the subject.
5. Until Sascha and Malia feel confident about speaking for themselves in public about politics…I’m really not interested in your teleporting their unstated private thoughts, and your personal experiences with them, like some Everychild hologram that everybody’s supposed to be awed by. Sascha and Mailia could be a nascent Leopold and Loeb of racism for all America is going to know while you’re in office be it one term or two. The same could have been said of Amy Carter. America is supposed to accept at face value the edifying emotional and intellectual impulses of Sascha and Malia! Plus I don’t buy that they aren’t cognizant of varied sexual orientation and/or same sex relationships or marriages. This would mean they’re not human or live in America. No I’m not a “birther.”
6. You know what I think is a REAL great performance? Lynn Redgrave’s brief scene in “Kinsey.”
