I’ve learned that NBC has closed a deal to renew Dick Wolf‘s veteran procedural Law & Order: SVU for a 14th season. Additionally, the network has given a series order to the Wolf-produced firefighter drama pilot Chicago Fire. And I also hear the producer has signed a new deal with NBC to stay at his long-time home, where he also is producing a new military competition reality series with Mark Burnett.

Chicago Fire, from Universal Television and Wolf Films, stars House‘s Jesse Spencer and is described as a action-driven drama exploring the complex and heroic men and women of the Chicago Fire Department. Derek Haas and Michael Brandt wrote the script and are executive producing with Wolf and
his executives Danielle Gelber and Peter Jankowski. Eamonn Walker, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, David Eigenberg, Charlie Barnett, Lauren German, Teri Reeves and Merle Dandridge co-star.
Despite its ratings taking a hit this season following the departure of co-star Chris Meloni and with the series being stuck with an anemic lead-in, Law & Order: SVU (2.3/6 in adults 18-49, 7.6 million total viewers in most current season averages) has remained one of NBC’s strongest series, ranking third behind The Voice-boosted Smash and Parenthood among adults 18-49. SVU star Mariska Hargitay already has a deal to return next season. Wolf has been based at NBC since the 2004 NBC-Universal merger. Before that, he was based at Universal’s TV studio, where the Law & Order franchise originated. This is his first renewal since NBCUni was taken over by Comcast last year.

I loved the dick wolf tribute on community. We need more dick in our lives.
Taylor Kinney as a fireman? I’ll be watching EVERY episode!
Where the hell is the renewal announcement for Harry’s Law? Congrats to fans of SVU & Chicago Fire sounds promising
Coming never. Sorry.
I’m afraid that we might not get one.
You’ll get your announcement about Harry’s Law when NBC releases its Fall Schedule without it being on the list.
Love Kathy Bates, but “Harry’s Law” is about as exciting as watching ice cubes melt. Let it die, please.
Harry’s law has been cancelled. Not enough people watched it apparently.
That’s Dick for ya! Such a stand up guy! Just keeps going and going… always putting stuff out.
Good for him.
Hope they film CF in Chicago.
The pilot was filmed in Chicago and I understand the current plan is to film the series entirely in Chicago starting July through the end of the year. Kelsey Grammar’s “Boss” is also filmed entirely in Chicago. The Fox Berman/Wright mob doctor drama pilot was filmed in Chicago as well and would likely be shot in the Windy City if picked up.
I don’t care about ‘Chicago Fire’ or Dick Wolf’s new reality show, I only care about ‘Law & Order: SVU’.
Dick Wolf/NBC needs to produce a new ‘Law & Order’ series, ‘Law & Order: Chicago’ or ‘Law & Order: D.C.’ preferably. That’s all Wolf is good for, his ‘Law & Order’ franchise, no disrespect to him intened.
I actually like the idea of a Law & Order: D.C.
At this point, why not let “SVU” die a graceful death, wait a season or two, and then reboot the original in midseason? “SVU” is probably running out of original story lines at this point, but the original could be more expansive and include many types of crime.
Really? You don’t think the original covered pretty much every crime possible in their 20 seasons? Nothing against repeating yourself, but you aren’t exactly going to get “new crimes”
I don’t doubt that it covered a lot of crimes, but hasn’t every show at this point?
My point was that, rather than focus mostly on sex crimes, a rebooted “Law & Order” could focus on pretty much everything.
Yes because Law and Order was sooo original. Wolf ain’t no genius, he’s just old enough to rememer this show: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056737/combined
You’re kidding right Anon? He’s mentioned many times that “Law & Order” is an homage to “Arrest & Trial”, but unlike the latter series that focuses on the defense of the arrested, “Law & Order” was one of the first to go in the eyes of prosecution, the ‘bad guys’. Get your facts straight.
NBC has a proven track record with shows like Chicago Fire. Especially if the characters are flawed but likeable. Hopefully this will work out for everyone involved.
Yes, Chicago Fire!
Reread that first comment and tell me when you stop laughing.
Is Mariska Hargitay done with SVU at end of this season? What about the other core cast members?
Happy for fans of SVU. Hopefully this network makes a good decision & RENEWS Harry’s Law very soon.
Right, because when you use the words ‘all he’s good for’ to describe someone it’s definitely not meant to be disrespectful. Except for how it is.
seriously? SVU has been so flat this season with the loss of Chris Meloni. No offense to Mariska, but without Chris Olivia has become the tired, lonely matriarch trying to stay relevant with the new young pups taking over all the running and action scenes. The biggest travesty this show committed was not giving Benson and Stabler a fulfilling ending that their 12 years together merited.
Chicago Fire sounds good. Still holding out hope for a renewal on Harrys Law and Parenthood.
We need more Dick in our lives.
the people pulling for harry’s law should not be allowed to watch television.
Can’t wait to see Jesse Spencer as a firefighter!!! It will be awesome!
Tired of Law and Order, SVU. Way too feminized and PC. We need more shows that are gritty and reflect real life attitudes and opinions. Tired of being lectured by the Left.
“Way too feminized and PC. …Tired of being lectured by the Left.”
Considering that most episodes are about rape and pedophilia, what exactly are the PC, Leftist ideas that are being advanced as part of the Liberal agenda?
-Is this “Rape Rape” or “kind of Rape?”
-That 15 year-old girl came on to the married adult so it’s okay.
-Sexual harassment is okay if it’s funny.
What you had in mind? We’re all listening.
I love that your user name is Gangsta Lean and you’ve left a completely articulate and ass kicking response to the tool above you.
Repect!
@cs- and why is that exactly? Harry’s Law is one of the more entertaining programs on tv. Considering Nbc’s state of affairs they’d be smart to renew Harry’s Law-demo be damned.Harry’s Law is the ONLY program I watch on Nbc,so, yeah I’m going to keep pulling for it!
well if it’s the only show YOU watch on NBC then it must be amazing. I must take your word for how amazing it is instead of me watching it for myself, which I did at first, and judging for myself that it is a complete train wreck and clearly no one is willing to tell David E Kelley NO. But considering NBC is in dead last then they probably will renew it. They just better renew Parenthood as well. Oh and ‘demo be damned’ will never be uttered by a network exec.
A forward-thinking network exec, like Moonves, will see the pointlessness of the A1849 demo in this day and age.
The younger end of that demo is not watching TV in the same way. Broadcasters would be smart to focus on A35+ who aren’t completely lost to time-shifting, mobile TV and online.
They would be even smarter to see the value in older demos who are far more sophisticated and internet-savvy than they’re given credit for.
But here we go again. Younger. Upscale. Blah blah blah. Another upfront. Gag me.
You don’t seem to understand anything about how the networks make their money. They make it mainly from ADVERTISERS, and they are the ones interested in the A18-49 demo, and that’s what they pay for. It doesn’t matter in the least what Moonves thinks about it.
Very smart move by NBC. This year’s Law and Order has been one of the best years ever. Now, if only had a suitable lead in……..
NBC should have released a Press Release announcing the above news and it should have gone something like this:
NBC, the 4th place network when you take out the Super Bowl and which is into a little bit of S&M, has renewed L&O:SVU because it has consistently managed to keep its 18-49 demo below 2. Kudos to Dick and his team.
Moreover, NBC has decided to venture into another new series from Dick Wolf Productions because based on their past working experience with the Dick, see LOLA and Trial by Jury, all shows have been flops.
And if the above promo photo is any indication, leftovers from now cancelled series are joining forces for yet another disaster waiting to happen.
If this is how Bob plans to fix NBC, well, you got another Jeff in your hands.
Enjoy…
Chicago Fire looks like a solid cast, but though the medical and firefighter dramas are safe pick-ups, NBC needs one or two of the big concepts as well.
Hope CF can cover character ground not already exploited by Denis Leary’s series. Because as far as action stories go, we’ve seen it all before in every series set in a fire station: Fires. Gee, what can happen next week? My guess: fire. Or, to spice things up, maybe a rescue!
Good moves by NBC no doubt about it but where the hell is Whitney Harry’s Law, Parenthood, and Downwardly Mobile.
Law and Order: Mars
Happy with the renewal of SVU. I think that’s the only series that deals specifically with sexual offenses. It sheds light on this drama so seriously and it shows the pain of the victims and what can be done for them. The stories are well written and deep. This year, new writer, the series showed wonderful stories. And Mariska Hargitay is fabulous. Great actress, great woman. Happy to see another season during those beautiful black eyes. Mariska is truly a beautiful woman.
The show should be killed off
