Out of the Hilton Hotel ballroom and back into Radio City Music Hall, NBC is presenting its first schedule developed by chairman Bob Greenblatt and his team. It features four nights of comedy and a total of 10 half-hour series. The programming part of the presentation opened with a video featuring former SNL Weekend Update co-anchors Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey “previewing” NBC’s lineup for next fall via DVDs sent to them by Greenblatt, who Fallon thought was “the Asian judge on The Voice.” The preview featured the casts of such NBC series as Law & Order: SVU, The Office, Grimm, and 30 Rock doing musical versions of their shows. The highlight: Meet The Press anchor David Gregory belting out a tune surrounded by a group of showgirls.

The presentation kicked off with a performance by Smash stars Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty and the emergence onstage of the four Voice spinning chairs. One by one, they turned around to reveal Voice stars Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine sitting in the first three and Greenblatt in the last.
Known for his love for Broadway, Greenblatt, for whom Smash has been a passion project, felt right in his element on the Radio City Music Hall stage. But he was quick to note that “despite speculation, I’m not hijacking the network and turning everything into a musical.”
Greenblatt presented the network’s new shows in tandem with NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke or, as Greenblatt referred to it, “the next Channel 4 team.”

They noted that new post-apocalyptic drama Revolution, which got the plum post-Voice slot, was NBC’s highest-testing drama pilot this year. “If we didn’t love it, we wouldn’t put it there,” Salke said. She called the the Tuesday 9 PM comedy block of the Matthew Perry-starring Go On and Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal “distinctive classy and attention-grabbing comedies.”
At the end of the fall-lineup presentation, Greenblatt said the network’s priorities will be the Tuesday 9 PM and Monday 10 PM hours, but it was another new comedy series that stole today’s show — the Justin Kirk-starring Animal Kingdom that airs on Wednesday. Kirk’s sidekick on the show, a small monkey — which was in attendance at the presentation — was the highest-testing character on an upcoming NBC series, Salke said.
During the Thursday portion of the presentation, Greenblatt confirmed that, sans Mindy Kaling, who has a new show on Fox, all other Office cast members will return next season.
Greenblatt’s take-away point from the upfront NBC: “Comedy is king.” As for the actual presentation, it was music that reigned. In addition to the opening Smash number, it also featured a performance by The Voice‘s second season winner Jarmaine Paul, and closed with another song from Smash. Keeping with the theme, Greenblatt’s closing line to advertisers was: “I hope you head to the Fox presentation this afternoon thinking how Bob Greenblatt will turn NBC into one big musical.”

Revolution trailer is already a hit. For less than 24 hours 1,5 millions views. Its crazy. All other trailers on networks are not even close.
It’s also the only real trailer. All the others are just short clips from the pilot.
Considering it’s the ONLY trailer, I would hope so!
I gotta admit, the trailer looks intriguing. But I got a distinct “Event” feel off it.
And it’s another case of a big-scope pilot that will have to be broken down to much smaller-scope episodes for the remainder of the season. It’s risky. “Falling Skies” had the same problem. But at least that one got renewed, maybe also because the bar was lower on cable.
The first episode of Smash was, like, ok…I’ll try it…but by the 4th it was getting embarrassing…it turned into a unintentionally funny cringe-fest by the end.
Revolution is a development deal debacle that resulted in a $2 million super put pilot from the team that brought you Alcatraz and Undercovers. More to the point is another Event, Sarah Conner, Human Target, Terra Nova. a big, movie-like TV show that will have nowhere to go after episode four.
Gone by Thanksgiving.
“Kirk’s sidekick on the show, a small monkey, which was in attendance at the presentation, was the highest-testing character on an upcoming NBC series, Salke said.”
I’d be worried about that, not boasting – just how awful are your other characters that a monkey beat the entire network for likeability?
2 millions views for revolution trailer… its like movie trailer -looks outstanding, freaking awesome! They must keep these 2 songs from trailer for theme in the episodes!
I bet revolution premiere will beat Person of interest and Once upon a time premieres even at 10! And these two was best dramas of the season.
Smash should be cancelled but Greenblatt can’t cancel it because his ego is so invested in the show. He’s stuck with it until it becomes so embarrassing that he’ll have to pull it.
Disagree – not everyone that watches TV wants just realty shows, crime or silly comedies. Some people like things like SMASH – for me, it’s the only show on TV that I make sure I watch every week. That is what is nice about TV – that there can be something for everyone – personally I don’t like sports and love musicals, others are the way – doesn’t mean I think all sport shows should be canceled. As far as the acting, music and concept of the show – I have work in both local community and professional theater as a costumer and stage manager for 30 years and find the show extremely truthful to the real thing.
Oh Jake, you’re making it a little too obvious that you’re affiliated with the network and/or the show.
all other Office cast members will return next season.
–Except for James Spader, right?
Comedy isn’t king with me. I’ve given up on all broadcast comedies, they can’t compete with cable. Broadcast dramas otoh sometimes do interest me, but even they have a hard time competing with cable. NBC has far too few interesting dramas this year.
Most of those NBC previews look awful. I can’t believe they canceled Awake, and picked up Do No Harm, which looks like a throwback to the 90s.
Revolution still looks really under cast to me. It will feel forced in episode 2 or 3 when we meet a known actor/actress now that the series is a go. Trailer is intriguing but can’t get past the feeling of it being a big budget Syfy show. And what happens after jon favreau and jj abrams move on after the first episode or two? I’m sure just like The Event people will tune in but if gets cheesy as quickly as The Event did it will be a one and done.
I love the reason Jen Salke gives for picking up a show is, “We love it.” That’s pathetic. Jen Salke needs to think for the audience not just for herself. That kind of solipsistic thinking is what got NBC in last place to begin with. Ben Silverman, Jeff Zucker, Jen Salke have these “kiss the ring” gargantuan egos with no taste. Poor Bob Greeblat has been isolated and cut off so Jen can keep her power. She needs to be kinder to everyone in the business and not such a prima donna. Be nice to people on your way up so they’ll be nice to you on your way down.
I love smash very excited for next season!!!
