Community fans won’t have to stage an uprising. (Well, maybe just a small mutiny over the size of the order.) The cult NBC/Sony Pictures TV comedy series has been renewed for next season with a 13-episode order. The short pickup is not a surprising. As we reported, NBC had been eying abbreviated orders for most or all of its returning comedies, which freed up money to pick up more freshmen. With the renewal secured, the question Community faces heading into its fourth season is whether it will return with both creator/showrunner Dan Harmon and co-star Chevy Chase on board. There has been a well documented feud between the two, raising speculation whether they could continue to work together or one would step down. I hear it is unclear as of now if Harmon will continue as showrunner. That is a possibility, with other scenarios also explored. Leaving Community are longtime executive producers Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan who just signed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.

Hopefully along with the shorter order will come the continued freedom to be the most innovative sitcom on network TV.
13 more eps gets them to 84. If they need 4 or so more, Sony will make them as DVD bonus if need be to get to syndication. More likely, NBC will give an extension to 17 if it’s not doing well and to 22 if it is.
Comedy Central already bought the syndication rights and will start broadcasting episodes in the fall of 2013. So there is no need to worry about how many more episodes there are!
YEAH! There’s hope for you yet, NBC.
Now give “Parks & Recreation” another season (@ least), “Awake” & “Harry’s Law” decent time slots, “Beautiful People” @ least 13 eps & you might get someone to watch.
Troy and Abed in the faaaaaaaaal!
Dan Harmon isn’t going anywhere. At least, not according to his interviews– he cares more about this show than food and sleep. IMO the Chase-Harmon feud has gotten blown past proportion. They had a very very public and dramatic argument but nobody threatened to leave. Plus, a voicemail surfaced from a year ago with Chase saying the same things and everything worked out fine then.
I’d hardly call the show innovative. It’s Spaced US as far as I’m concerned.
No surprise with this renewal and being abbreviated which will make it the final season of the show, BUT they have to get rid of Chevy Chase as he has been causing way too many problems on set and he needs to be shown the door.
The show can survive without out Chevy Chase.
Chevy Chase’s character is probably the easiest one to get rid of on the show. I know Chevy Chase carries the most name value, but his performance isn’t anything that carries the show. He’s entirely replaceable.
They don’t even need to replace him, and they can probably save on overall costs, if they cut him loose. I used to be one of his last few supporters, but you’re right – he hasn’t added much to the show, and if it would at all tip the scales towards saving/extending the show, I’m all for it!
I can’t believe anyone finds this show funny. The humor (or lack of it) is so stupid it’s insulting. The Big Bag Theory is just as bad, yet I hear people talk about how funny the show is. Network television is all together insulting. The only shows that had good writing were 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. Unfortunately that was only for the first few seasons.
Here is a pretty good indicator for a bad show: It has a laugh track. Most good shows don’t have (or need) a laugh track.
Step away from the TV and read a Christopher Hitchens book or something.
You do realize the humor in this show is meant to be stupid right? That is what makes it funny…
Community needs Dan Harmon’s genius and commitment!! IF their disagreement is so serious they can’t be adults and work together then peace out, Chevy Chase. You’re way too egotistical and not nearly funny enough to give yourself the airs the way you do.
The problem NBC has, and the reason that while this show would be considered a success on a cable channel (when you account for DVR and download numbers), is that the’re still weighed down with an archaic business model that requires them to service the affiliates to survive. If Community were on a channel like AMC alongside Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead, keeping it would be a no-brainer, the ratings and DVR / download numbers are sufficient to pay the bills. Unfortunately, NBC has to deal with local affiliates who don’t give a damn about DVD sales or downloads because those don’t help them sell advertising and they don’t get their cut on those. So, a show that’s successful by objective measures will get canned because the distribution system can’t keep up with the modern world. Hooray!
Troy and Abed make the show. Bitter much?
Why are people happy about this, just thirteen episodes? Thats garbage, give us a full 22 episode season. Lets all be perfectly honest with ourselves here short seasons are crap, they were crap when Lost started doing them and they are crap with every other show out there as well. And here is why, a show’s best stuff usually shows up mid season when its not being artificially pushed along by the story arc needing to begin or end.
So you waste the first episode recapping everything and resolving finale issues, and you spend the end of the season wrapping things up or pulling plot twists, but the 17 or so episodes in the middle are the classics, the episodes that don’t need to abide by any rules.
This shortened season will be forced garbage, all it will be is them trying to wrap stuff up and end things, I guess that means community is basically done for. Instead they will waste money on crap sitcoms that will go fail immediately
I’m sorry but I think that I would rather see Chevy go than Dan, I mean if you look back on the shows Pierce is just that guy that chimes in when no one else has anything to say and then when he does people just tell him to stuff it. What is the point of this character? All he does is make racist, sexist, and chauvinistic comments or repeats things that Jeff says, and there is no need because the show already has the perfect mix of racism, sexism, chauvinism, and Jeffism. Boot Chevy, I respect him as an actor but in this case he is just bland. Either he should go or they need to give his character some damn substance cuz he is just downright boring.
…and Annie and Jeff have got to get together, its like the only thing keeping me on the edge of my seat. “After three long years and tons of awkward moments filled with sexual tension, Jeff and Annie, will they or won’t they?” [hot damn, say that in your head with Abed's voice, its magic
]
I truly hope 4 6 seasons and a movie cuz im tired of watching all the episodes over and over on hulu. They should know this show is good when kids sit in the house all day and watch the same episodes over and over. PAINTBALL EPISODES ROCK. LONG LIVE COMMUNITY!!!!!!!!! WHOS WITH ME?
Wait, what if the shorter season is just a way for them have 6 seasons and a movie without having the cast in school for 6 years? First semester gets it’s own season, Second gets it’s own, and then something goes wrong that they have to take one more semester, ending with a movie where someone’s trying to ruin their graduation.
