The ratings for NBC‘s The Voice have been front-loaded, starting big for the blind auditions featuring the spinning chairs and then falling off in the battle rounds. NBC brass are looking to stem the declines by extending the presence of the show’s signature feature. “People love the spinning chairs, and we will put them into the battle rounds this coming season,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said during a conference call today. He wouldn’t elaborate on specifics but noted that the tweaks will make The Voice “even better and more competitive.”
Among the major singing competitions, The Voice will be the first to try two cycles a season this coming season in the mold of ABC’s dancing stalwart Dancing With The Stars. (Fox’s American Idol and The X Factor as well as NBC’s America’s Got Talent air once a year.) The double duty will put the young show and its stars to the test. Mentors, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine are committed to do the fall edition, while their participation in the spring one will be based on their availability as all four are active musicians.

The ratings are front loaded because once the novelty of the spinning chairs is over, the show becomes another by-the-numbers singing game show where a faceless winner is crowned never to be heard from again.
Meh… Battle rounds are boring anyway.
More spinning chairs! NBC’s master plan to become Must See TV again! Genius! Brilliant! Way to go!
(Head-shaking abounds.)
The problem is they are going up against dancing with the stars and the CBS comedies. If they just moved back to Tuesday, there is no reality competition. It’s only hurting both shows– more the voice which dropped 60 percent in demos and viewers since its premiere
I also think the childish bickering and the increasingly rude and bad attitude of Xtina helped with the decline.
Would be intriguing if they got new judges for the spring version cause many artists want to do that.
Look at The Voice U.K with Tom Jones, Jessie J, Will.I.AM and Danny from The Script.
The Voice Australia has Seal, Joel Madden, Keith Urban and another talented singer… So they should at least give it a try…
once the spinning chairs are done i leave the show..this year i didnt care for any of the final four…gospel, gravely voice, opera and goofball. they need better contestants and me thinks a shorter show..2 hours is too long..they pad the show with so much junk.
If you left the show after the spinning chairs, how do you even know who the finalists were?
“The Voice”‘s slow decline will only be exacerbated by over-exposure. Does no one remember what happened when prime time was saturated by “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”
Or Deal or No Deal… NBC show sure knows how to run a show to the ground.
The title of this post could easily be an Onion article.
Dear NBC….The problem is not adding more spinning chairs during the battle rounds. The problem IS THE BATTLE ROUNDS. No one wants to see 2 contestants on stage at the same time, sing the same song by trading out verses. It’s mind numbing.
The OTHER elephant in the room are 2 of the judges. Xtina has become a nasty little witch. Cee Lo offers NOTHING. He is THE VOICE version of Randy Jackson. Both those judges need to go.
Also the producer needs to realize this show is a reality show and is looking to find the best competitive singer FOR the SHOW. None of these people will go on to become famous (just like Idol-with a very few exceptions) They just aren’t good enough. EVERY contestant on this years show had already had some cred in the music industry. All were professionals who didn;t sell and lost their contracts. It’s not like these are just kids from down the street and someone discovered they had talent. Most all had already produced cd’s professionaly.
Instead of calling the show THE VOICE. It should be called ‘Second(or Third) Chance’
Agree about Xtina and CeeLo.
I wanted to like CeeLo, but he repeatedly dissed the most interesting singer of the whole competition: Tony Vincent.
Lets stop having the voting done by phone vote.
Release the singers singles on iTunes and choose by who actually sells. Then you’ve got something meaningful, and you make a ton of money.
Win win.
I disagree with you about the battle rounds. To me it was very exciting to watch two great singers go head to head in a battle round. What I don’t like about this show is when the judges/coaches favor a certain contestant and let go of a less deserving contestant. You are right, that many of them were previously in music but there were some very interesting voices on this show that I would buy albums from that I would have never known had they not participated on this show. I do agree that the judges get annoying sometimes, especially in the beginning when they have to sell themselves to the contestants. That gets boring really quick.
The idea of possibly having two different sets of coaches for the Fall and Spring editions is interesting and could work.
