UPDATED: NBC‘s push to launch part of its fall lineup early to take advantage of the August coverage of the Olympics will be anchored by the first fall cycle of The Voice. At today’s upfront presentation, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt announced that the third season of The Voice will premiere on September 10, possibly followed by the debut of the new JJ Abrams/Eric Kripke drama Revolution. He also noted that the network will “sample pilots during the Olympics,” likely previewing new series during its coverage from the London games. After the presentation, Greenblatt said that the idea is to showcase the pilots for two new series during NBC’s primetime coverage of the Olympics for up to 30 minute each, meaning that the whole pilot would air for a comedy and part of it for a drama. No decision has been made which series will get that platform, but the new Matthew Perry comedy Go On had been put on the fast track for an early launch and is one of NBC’s highest priorities for fall.

I’m very curious about this situation. Over-saturation has proven to be unsuccessful in the past. ‘The Voice’ may have been a ratings success for NBC during its early audition rounds, but once the chairs stopped turning, the ratings declined. Having the show on twice a year may prove to be the death of it. Hopefully they will retool the show to better attract viewers to the show afterwards. Also, hopefully they find a winner who actually has potential to sell records after the competition is over, otherwise I can’t see the show lasting much longer.
THE VOICE still has buzz, so two cycles next season won’t oversaturate it… yet. However, with all the talent shows competing right now, ratings will drop for THE VOICE compared to the season that just wrapped. Even with lowered ratings, NBC finally has a platform to launch new shows (REVOLUTION and GO ON/NEW NORMAL) – something they didnt have for, what, 5 years now?
With that said, I really hope the winter edition of VOICE does indeed cast four new judges, leaving Adam, CeeLo, Xtina and Blake for the fall editions. In my mind, that will be the key to keeping it exciting.
I agree. I can see NBC milking this show for all its worth. I question the shows longevity.
It’s NBC’s stubbornness that will end this show — it doesn’t need to go up against another hit reality show in Dancing with the stars and the cbs comedies when Tuesdays where it started is free and clear of reality programming. Two cycles this year with the spring cycle probably having a different set of judges.
They supposedly are retooling the show. I have never seen it (I don’t have much use for shows like this), but I can see the appeal in switching up the judges every so often.
I would also ask NBC to develop a reality show that is fun and mindless and that doesn’t rely on people losing weight, singing, or something like that. “White Elephant” sounds like an appealing concept, and if possible, they should try to fast track it for summer time. Perhaps it might fail, but I should see it working.
And imagine it does. NBC could then have solid hour on another night of the week, like Wednesday, where it could grow new shows.
So what does “sample pilots during the Olympics” mean? Are they showing new fall show clips, airing failed pilots in their entirity during that time, or what?
Revolution must premiere with the voice premiere Sept. 9.
Revolution trailer is already a hit. For less than 24 hours 1,5 millions views. Its crazy. Its like a movie hit!
Too bad the clip sucked. And people watch all of the trailers. I bet all of the trailers have been watched by many people.
Yeah, how about that? None of the other shows are even close.
sep 9 is a sunday….nfl airs then
Going into it’s 3rd season is good, a fall/non-competition with Idol is good…still hasn’t produced a hit making artist is bad.
The show will slowly lose it’s viability as searching for “The Voice” when after someone wins we never actually hear them on the radio.
They may air the pilots or sample stand alone episodes of various comedies after evening olympic coverage. Since the olympics are in London, there won’t be many live events in prime time so this is the perfect opportunity to help build their audience and buzz pre premiere.
Idol: the early seasons produced hit Makers, while the last few seasons have not.
Voice: Early people are not catching on, but maybe America has yet to find the right voice.
Cool! Four months is just about as long as I want to go before forgetting the newest winner of “The Voice!”
Will AGT end on Sept 2nd or T 3rd?
2 issues:
1- over saturation . ‘the voice’ spaced out will achieve more effective ratings over the long term. don’t mess w/ a formula that appears to e working.
2- so ryan
2- so Ryan seacrest will be promoting the voice (an idol competitor) during the Olympics ? .. Does his new NBC contract prohibit this ?
