EXCLUSIVE: Drive helmer Nicolas Winding Refn is in talks with DreamWorks to direct Button Man, an adaptation of the graphic novel Button Man: The Killing Game by John Wagner and Arthur Ranson. Wagner created Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog. The action revolves around Harry Exton, a hired gun who’s offered a fortune to take part in a game organized by bored millionaires that sets trained killers against one another in a fight to the death. The fat cats bet on the proceedings, and when Exton gets disgusted and opts out, his only exit strategy might be to off the millionaires funding the competition. The film is produced by Roger Kass, Josh Braun and Michael De Luca.
Deal isn’t done yet, but it certainly is material that is a strong match for Refn. After the critical acclaim for the stylishly violent Drive, Refn re-teamed with Ryan Gosling for Only God Forgives, a crazy drama set in Thailand, in which Gosling plays the son of a Florida-based crime syndicate boss (Kristen Scott Thomas) who is plying the drug trade in Thailand with his brother. When his addicted sibling becomes involved in a murder and gets tangled up with a sword-wielding cop who calls himself the Angel of Vengeance, Gosling’s character, who is proficient in mixed martial arts, is compelled to seek revenge on behalf of his mother. There is swordplay, and a lot of slicing and dicing. The film was acquired by Radius-TWC partners Tom Quinn and Jason Janego for their new multiplatform releasing entity. Refn is also attached with Gosling to a Warner Bros remake of Logan’s Run. He’s repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Independent Talent Group.

Excited about this!
Drive was 1 of my top 10 favorite films from last year. Very much looking forward to both Only God Forgives and Button Man
Only God Forgives sounds awesome. Button Man sounds like a bore that has been plenty of times. Won’t get made.
Nicholas Refn is a genius. He’s one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. Great news for Dreamworks!
Cheers Roger, Button Man rocks. Can’t wait for this one….
Barry Levy is a rock star!!!
Hope they’re throwing about Kurtzman & Orci’s horrible script for Logan’s Run and starting over from scratch.
Meanwhile, Button Man was brilliant in its day, but it’s 30 years old at this point, and as people have pointed out, everything unique about it has been done to death since then. This is only emerging now because of The Hunger Games similar plot (kill or be killed while Richie Rich watches) did so well and everyone Hollywood always wants to be the 2nd guy with a good idea.
Arthur Ranson is a great artist. I picked that book off of the shelves and I was blown away. I wish he did more work.
Does anybody else look at that pic and see Newt Gingrich?
He did do more work. Look at his website.
Sounds vaguely like 2009 “The Tournament” about a battle royale between 30 of the world’s deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No 1, which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag.
Drive could have been a great movie if Refn had just stuck to the book. He turned the Latina femme fatale into a mealy mouthed blonde, and turned her gang friends into extras from a Gap commercial. Refn’s racebending was beyond sad; Carrie Mulligan as an inner city waitress with a Latino son and gangbanger husband would only make sense to a Dane who doesn’t know his Santee from his Bel Air.
And having three names like a 80′s child star only makes him lamer.
