It an ironic twist of fate, on the same day ABC renewed its first batch of series for next season, the network’s long-forgotten freshman Pam Am won the best series category at this year’s Rose d’Or awards, considered Europe’s top television honors. On this side of the pond Pan Am was not among the seven scripted series renewed by ABC today. It is unlikely to be among the second wave of the network’s renewals tomorrow either, though ABC has not officially passed on the series, which started off great but quickly lost traction with viewers.
Unless it has a change of heart, ABC is poised to officially cancel Pan Am, but that may not be the end of the period drama about the iconic U.S. airline. As evident by the Rose d’Or award, it enjoys strong popularity in Europe and has been a big international seller for producer Sony TV, which would love to see it continue. I hear there is a potential cable play eyed for the series if/when it is released by ABC. Unless European broadcasters swoop in and pick it up. If only they could afford it….

ABC keeps saying they want to get into the summer television game. Seems like this would be the perfect show for them to make into a summer series. Possibly partner with a European studio and vola could have a decent summer entry. Now, would the ratings justify a third season? All depends on how it would do in the summer, of 2013.
I watched Pan Am, and I loved every episode. To me Pan Am was well made TV show on casts, story and wardrobe.
I understand ABC have to consider their show’s viewer rates for getting Advertisements than TV show’s quality itself.
I hope ABC considers many audience over the world wishes to watch a new season of Pan Am.
On top of looking beautiful and being a fun show, this had/has a ton of potential and the cast was good. I would love to see it find a home somewhere else.
The question is if SONY wants to keep the show going, would they lower the licencing fee in a situation like they’ve done with RULES OF ENGAGEMENT and previously to ‘TILL DEATH to get the syndication numbers up.
Yes Please! This would be better off on cable anyways. Make the show sexier and the characters would be allowed to smoke.
Ditto to the smoking-WTF didnt they have them do it? PC ruined the potential of this show!
“and has been a big international seller for producer Sony TV,”
oh, man, it’s such a bs. of course it’s a great seller, BEFORE the pilot. The EVent also was a great seller in Europe. But after it premiered, the viewers have fleed.
Sad but true – in the UK BBC2 consigned “Pan Am” to the doldrums of Saturday nights during its run, a fate which also greeted “Heroes” during its final season and “Nurse Jackie” in its second season (the BBC dropped the latter afterwards).
So, what, the Rose d’Or Awards are like the Razzies then?
No kidding – is this an award for best series in the whole world? Pan Am isn’t even close to being the best American TV series.
What’s better, just off the top of my head – Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Justified, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men, The Walking Dead and Awake. (Mostly cable, what a surprise, huh?)
Of that list, Awake is cancelled but far more deserving of renewal than Pan Am, which is pretty to look at but insipid and shallow, just more broadcast twaddle.
Awake actually tries to rise above broadcast limitations. If Europe wants to revive a deserving American series, Awake is the one you want. Forget Pan Am, it richly deserved cancellation for being an empty bore.
It’s extremely possible that BBC Two moved the show to avoid garnering a large fanbase, when they knew it would be canceled anyway.
I wouldn’t be shocked if TNT or FX scoops this show up, plus FOX is good at marketing over seas.
Who would even want to see it? Travis Yanan was right, it was an over-the-counter sleep aid…
Europe? It’s not even on tv in germany. ( a rather large market, I might ad)
Only watched the pilot episode and found it dreadfully slow.
Americans would rather watch stupid trash TV like American Idol. This show actually features actors instead of wanna bes.
While I would like to see it happen, is it even feasible? This is an expensive show to produce.
Pan Am was tons better than most of the empty drivel of realtity tv and who wants to pretend to be able to sing.
The show required some knowledge of 1960s history and needed a far better time slots..I see the show that replaced it did no better and was cancelled too…the time slot was bad.
What works in Europe doesn’t necessarily translate into success here in America. The show had promise but because of horrible writing, no sense of direction and just awful acting by Christine Ricci and a few others, that’s what doomed the show and it’s too expensive to make in the process. As much as I wanted to see the show do well, it just got lost in the shuffle during the season and the pre-emptions didn’t help it either, so it was good while it lasted here in the States.
I adored this show. It needed more time to find it’s feet – or maybe I should say to find it’s wings! There was and is an audience for it and it’s sad to see it go.
I will gladly watch ANYTHING with Karine Vanasse (Colette) so PLEASEEEEE someone else pick it up.
Loved PanAm – very sad and surprised to see it go.
Love Pan Am & wish that some cable channel could pick it up, but it was very expensive & the clock is ticking. ( Also, 2 stars have already signed provisional contracts for other shows. )
This show had–and still has–so much potential, if given the chance to hit its stride. The mistakes that were made can be corrected–for example, even recasting some of the parts should be easy in a story line involving such transient characters– and the basic premise, if done right, is surefire. The show ABC replaced it with was far inferior and deserves its fate but this one doesn’t.
AS long as I get to watch it, I don’t care what network it’s on. Funny though, this is the ONLY show I watch on ABC. Hint. Hint.
I, too, liked Pan Am very much, and I always looked forward to the next episode. But, I believe that what ultimately killed it is the same thing that frustrated me about it. ABC never allowed it to run more than 2 or 3 weeks without interruption. There were several times during the show’s run when there would be lapses of 3 weeks or more between episodes. This happened last fall, soon after the show’s debut, and again in very early 2012. By the time that the show would return, people had forgotten about it! How can ABC expect most people to hang on and the show to build an audience, when the continuity of episodes is so inconsistent?
it would be great to see
pan am return to televsion. it was one
of my favorite tv shows.
Would love to see more of PAN AM, would watch it anywhere anyhow, stream it, buy it…
