Instead of calling it One Shot, after one of the Lee Child novels about ex-military policeman-turned-benevolent drifter Jack Reacher, Paramount Pictures has retitled its Christopher McQuarrie-directed Tom Cruise-starrer Jack Reacher. That should resonate with fans of the bestselling series about the hulking loner who hitchhikes from town to town, always finding himself smack in a situation where a helpless person needs someone who can put the clues together, and lay an ass whupping on anybody who gets in his way. Those book fans will need to adjust to Cruise as the hero, who in the novels goes about 6’5″ and 250 pounds, towers over opponents and beats the bad guys to a pulp. Cruise isn’t of that stature, but when I interviewed him recently for Playboy Magazine and asked what he’d be bringing to the table to compensate, he said “Everything but the height.” He indicated that there are all the obligatory brawls and that the author himself endorsed the choice of Cruise. The title change indicates that Cruise and the studio look at this as more than a “one shot” deal, and that Cruise might well have two franchises at the studio after Cruise stood tall in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, which grossed $693 million worldwide. Jack Reacher hits theaters December 21.

I’m sorry but anyone who saw COLLATERAL should not be questioning Cruise as a bad Mow-Foe. He was completely believable as an ex-special forces, take you out in 3 seconds with or without a weapon, bad, bad man.
I could care less about the height. I don’t care what his height is, because he has the presence of 10 men on the screen.
Can’t wait to see this.
Tom Cruise is a bad choice to play Jack Reacher. Jason Statham would have been the right choice, I dont know why Tom has been chosen, jut because of his star value maybe!
Definitely YOUR right, tom is to short! Jason Statham is much more suitable for the part
Just one problem with that comment….. Jason Statham cant act
Neither can Tom Cruise. Jason Statham is still the better choice.
Agree that Tom Cruise well able to be a bad boy, but Jason Statham fits shape and fit of part better. This guy is supposed to be physically imposing, shaved head, non conversational type with scars…wracking brains as to who and Statham was my choice as closest to this type when thinking about how this would be put to film. Even then, could you make him big enough? Absolutely love all the books, hope the film does not kill it.
Tom Cruise is a poor choice for Jack Reacher. I love the Reacher novels and I am not sure if I will be able to watch the movie with Tom Cruise playing Reacher!
Its not that he can’t portray a character who is bad ass, its the fact that there he is 5,8? maybe and the character is supposed to be 6,5 and for those who read the books this will always present a problem whether he does a good job or not
yes, yes, a million times yes. the problem is not whether T.C. can present himself as a fighting machine, but that the TRUE Reacher fans have him pictured in their mind as a hulk of a man. If you look at Lee Childs’ web site, the first thing that you see about Reacher is his description – his PHYSICAL description. Not his history, not his way of handling problems, not how many punches he can throw or how fast he can run – but his overwhelming size, weight, and girth. Reacher is identified by his size in every single book.
Lee Child, You have sold out to the mighty dollar,( which you don’t need). Any of the top flight wrestlers like John Cena, Trible H etc. Would have been more believable as Jack Reacher, after all there better actor’s then, “The Mighty Midget”. All Reacher Fans have a picture of a Big Guy in their heads/. So why oh why did Lee Child let The One Who Thinks he is God, and the person he said would never play the part play him. And as for changing the name,???????? This one’s mind boggles. Lee why did you leave England????????
devo. Jack Reacher played by Tom Cruise just crushed me. NO NO WAY! Please. an open audition of an unknown who is BIG BIG BIG (and I don’t mean just the ego-Tom) would have been the option! If u where gonna go a hotshot shorty may as well got the roughy and signed Russell Crowe. Seriously WTF????
Reacher is BIG and battered – can be hit by a truck and walk away – while Tom Cruise has has his moments in his films this is a serious mis-cast. Why not just cast Mr Bean? TC could play the part of any of Reacher’s buddys or a bad guy but not the man himself. wrong wrong wrong!
You aren’t seriously suggesting John Cena or any wrestler The Rock included has anywhere near enough acting skills to fulfill the role. I don’t particularly think Tom Cruise is the best choice actor either but atleast he can portray a character. I reckon he might surprise a few skeptics
I’m over the whole “Tom Cruise isn’t big enough to be Jack Reacher” thing. I can’t think of a movie that I’ve seen him in that wasn’t totally believable. I can’t wait!
Has anyone read Child’s book? Does anyone remember what Reacher looks like? Reacher is not Tom Cruise. I have all the Reacher books and have enjoyed them. I DO NO INTEND TO SEE THE MOVIE. The thought of Cruise be giving the role discusts me.
I’m with you 100%!! I’ve read all of the books and Jack Reacher is in my head as a big roughly manly man, that’s quite, polite, and under neath is ready to kick ass and take names. If John Wayne was alive and young enough he would be perfect for the role. I will not see the movie, because it makes me sick to think of Tom Cruise trying to make us believe he”s Jack!
I am in total agreement.. Tom Cruise is a BAD choice for Jack Reacher. When I heard it I was shocked and mortified. I, too, have read the Lee Child books.. and to think of Tom Cruise as Reacher..just don’t cut it. Big mistake. Someone like The Rock/Dwayne Johnson would be perfect for the part…as would many others .. but NOT Tom Cruise
NO NO NO NO
I agree with your post. Tom Cruise is NOT and NEVER WILL BE Jack Reacher. Those who think this is OK have NOT read the books. Tom Cruise is all his movies his still Tom Cruise…can’t act worth a darn He ruined Interview with a Vampire for me forever and now Jack Reacher????There are legions of Jack Reacher fans shouting Nooooooo into the cosmos. Hope it backfires on the studio and someday someone does a true movie version of these books cast correctly.
@Vincent Hanna- You must not have read the books. Reacher’s size is a major part of his persona, and Lee Child did not create him as a “bad moe foe”.
Your comment obviously means your one of the mindless drones that think TC is just “awesome!!” but you have not read any of the books. If you did, you would understand, that throughout the whole series of Lee Child “Reacher” books, its is not his height that is the key factor, its that the presence he brings when he walks along the street is one that makes people cross the street to avoid him, nobody messes with him unless they are dumb, blind, stupid or a combination of all three. TC does not have that, never has never will…. Face the reality, TC production company bought the rights and as with “Rock of Ages” he will not appear in any movie that he is not the STAR in…. he has to be a hero, the greatest, the biggest and the best…. there are at least 10 better and more appropriate picks for Jack, and lee child endorsing TC means nothing becuase he has no say, toms production company bought the rights and they can do anything they want and my guess is that it will have almost NOTHING resembling the “One Shot” novel it is based on.
Yeah right …He’s equal to 10 men on the screen !!
Maybe we will luck out and they will choose a different actor for each Reacher film like they do for Batman. Or at least until they pick the right actor to play Reacher. Really can’t see Tom Cruise as Reacher.
I like Cruise too but I’m also a fan of the Reacher novel series. Definitely gonna check out the movie but I’ll have to agree with some of the others. As fine an actor as Cruise is, he’s too much of a pretty-boy to play Jack Reacher. I’d have liked to see a more hardened and tested looking guy to play the part of Reacher. If nothing else, it should still be a good action film, can’t wait to see it!
Yeah, because changing the name of an adaptation to be simply the name of the main character worked out so well the last time a studio wanted to build a movie franchise.
In other words, Lestat the Barroom Brawler?
Did they not learn anything from John Carter?
This is a bestselling series, apparenty, but still…
To equate it with somebody who is nothing but a startup guy is ridiculous. Cruise is different breed. He has great following in international market if bum Americans cannot support their own.
Sounds a lot like “John Carter” don’t it?
Because this strategy worked so well for John Carter!….They’re dumb. ‘One Shot’ is actually a pretty good title.
“Jack Reacher”? Doesn’t that sound like a porn film?
And “One Shot” dosen’t?
That was kind of amazing.
Hate to break it to the haters, but the movie is fabulous: Tight, well-scripted, and a great performance by Cruise. This is a repositioning for all of the RIGHT reasons: F-r-a-n-c-h-i-s-e.
Guys, come on. This move makes a lot of sense if they want to turn in this into a franchise. I am pretty sure the reason John Carter didn’t work at the box office was not the name but the film itself didn’t hold up well enough for most audiences. And not everyone can luck out with tiles like Robert Ludlum’s “Bourne” series or have the brand identity of James Bond, who can get away with Quantum Of Solace (even though I loved that title from unrelated Fleming story, made sense for the story).
Jack Reacher will work. Tom Cruise will make it work just like he did for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (a title which also was made fun of)
Tom Cruise is not a Jack Reacher and other countries apart from Amercia read Lee Childs books, Chris Hemsworth,or The Rock suit more of the Jack Reacher Mould,i saw Ghost Protocol same old Tom Cruise acting ???As for changing the tittle why not change all the oringinal books names to suit the movie franchise – that way it will be so much fun for us book readers to guess which book is what movie.Lee Childs should of kept his word,he said Tom Cruise would never be considered for a movie from one of his books????? Oh how money talks ??
Ok, this is how it works. Lee Child sold the movie rights to his book years ago. He didn’t get paid more money just because Tom Cruise is in it. He doesn’t get residuals unless he writes the script, which he did not. He has no say in who is cast or anything else. He gets on board and supports the movie or not. He chose to support it because, I’m sure he wants to see it succeed and get more Reacher movies made. I think if Cruise is going to star in a franchise situation, it’ll never happen. No Reacher fan will like
Your actually wrong, i watched a Lee Childs interview and he said the Reacher actor didn’t exist and wanted full selection of the actor.
It is a shame for whatever reasons T.C. has been cast. He cannot, I repeat, CANNOT pull off playing Jack Reacher!!! Perhaps if we had not read every Jack Reacher book, we as readers could be fooled to believe that Tom Cruise could do a decent job. It is about the height and breadth of the character, not the acting skills of the actor. The minute we see tiny tom a great groan will resonate throughout the audience.
Actually if you could make The Rock a bit less pretty and add a few scars and scabs it would still be better than Tom. Gotta be a lump of a man. He’s supposed to be blond, 6’5″ condom full of walnuts. Tom is not that by any stretch of the imagination. Please don’t kill the books for me forever!
It was the name. The name is why we didn’t bother with it.
This is about as good an idea as Cruise as a Samurai.
Gina Carano looked like she could kick your butt because she actually could and it made “Haywire” the better for it.
I’d love to see Cruise get in the ring with her!
I read the earlier comments, and I must say that the title “Jack Reacher From Mars” is an exceptionally poor idea.
It also worked for Jerry Maguire (with Cruise), Erin Brockovich, and I’m sure a couple of others.
John Carter had problems miles and miles and miles beyond it’s title so can folks stop clinging to the notion that THAT alone was what turned it into a disaster? No? That’s ok – I figured it would be an impossible ask.
Rock wasn’t available? This is turning into the white Kung Fu. Porn version: Jack Reacharound.
one shot sounds much better
Why not call it “Walking Short” in honor of the Buford Pusser like character
I started reading the books, in no particular order, on the recommendation of a friend. I find them to be entertaining diversions.
Tom Cruise as the title character is a joke. The studio suits don’t get it. Lee Childs is obviously thrilled by the prospect of a huge payday.
I won’t be heading to the multiplex to watch this abomination.
Agreed! Hard core Reacher fans are not ready to accept short, dark-haired (insane) Cruise as Jack Reacher. I agree that I think Lee is just happy he got a “big name” for the movie. I can’t start picturing Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher when I read the books – it will spoil it for me. I’d rather skip the movie. I enjoy the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series…but the first movie didn’t do well because Katherine Heigl was the WRONG choice as star, which thousands of fans pointed out. I’m afraid the same thing is going to happen here. I’ll keep my books and imagination, you keep your Cruise movie.
I agree with Maleficent. When you read a book (especially a series), make a deep connection with the characters, and have that “motion picture” in your mind as to every physical nuance of the authors creation. Not just any actor can portray what is envisioned in your mind, famous or not. The author creates that character with a purpose, and it is a serious injustice to the authors’ work when the character is not represented accurately. Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher will not work, just as Katherine Heigl portraying Stephanie Plum did not work. I believe that before actors are ever interviewed, casting directors should actually read the book(s) and find the best fit, based on the authors vision. That would make a movie more believable and more enjoyable for the viewers/readers.
Your comments mirrored what I just wrote. I agree 100%. total joke.
Lee Child could care less. Maybe I will watch it some day. But I doubt it.
Coming to a theater near you…Tom Cruise is.. Jack Reacharound!!! wait i mean.. clearly a bad name for obvious reasons
I concur with all the John Carter commentary.
Yeah, this sounds so much better. Seems like Reacher would have been a better choice than the full name. Regardless, being a fan of the books, Cruise is so not the right person for this this role. So if I watch it it won’t be until I can rent it for $1.
You and me both – redbox!! I’ll go so far as to rent it for $1.28
I think Chris Hemsworth would have been a better choice!
This is really a disappointment. Reacher would be ashamed to have Cruise represent him. Surely there were other choices.
“shame?” ha! They have none!!
If Tom Cruise was in John Carter instead of Taylor Kitsch, I guarantee it wouldn’t have flopped.
Such comparisons are stupid.
Agree with most everybody on the title– what was wrong with One-Shot?
I’m looking forward to this one– been waiting for McQuarrie to direct another feature ever since “Way of the Gun”. I hope Paramount doesn’t screw this up.
They changed the name to suit Tom Cruise’s ego. If he’s going to franchise, he’s going to make sure that he’s what people think of when they think of the character. I’m actually they didn’t rename him to Tom Cruise for him.
The Hollywood formula is take a great book franchise and lock it down for a big star. Then, change the character in the book, the title, and everything else to make it the Tom Cruise show.
For those of you who have read the books, be prepared for yet another Cruise takeover. Jack Reacher (the real one) doesn’t run for his life very often if at all.
Anyone want to bet the Tom Cruise running brand will be Jack Reacher.
This whole process makes me truly sick.
How many Tom Cruise films were book series adaptations?
Why would Cruise run away?
Tom Cruise has running scenes in virtually every action film he does. This aspect will now probably occur with his Jack Reacher.
In reading the books, I don’t recall Jack Reacher running. That was the point. The successful book series is rapidly becoming a Tom Cruise film sacrificing all or most of the written Jack Reacher character.
Of course, if the written 6′ 5″ two hundred and fifty pound Jack Reacher existed in this film, no one would expect him to be running. Get it?
Aside from the physical description of the character and pre-supposing there will be a “running scene”, what other inside information do you have regarding how they’ve changed the character? Oh that’s right– YOU DON’T HAVE ANY.
Some things have to be sacrificed when adapting for the big screen. All the comic nerds were up-in-arms when Wolverine wasn’t cast as a 5′ tall midget. Some things just don’t translate.
The thing that has me worried– is there a good story being told here? All these Reacher fans are so upset about the casting, but in the end the story is getting told. It is a good story, right?
JACK RUN??. RUN AT YOU…BUT NEVER AWAY….unless he is being sneaky
Ugh! So who’s going to be his twin brother Danny De Vito? And the Prison Fight – it’s going to be soooo believable that he is able to kick a “Michael Clark Duncan’s” butt.
He’s too old to start this series. Even his demeanor isn’t right for this.
Oh well, I guess this will give lots directionally challanged people jobs.
Cruise is too little to play Jack Reacher – they should have picked somebody like Tom Selleck to play this part. Now it’s ruined for me cause I don’t even like Tom Cruise.
