EXCLUSIVE: About a dozen people were laid off today at Sesame Workshop, producers of Sesame Street. The job cuts were at the company’s main New York offices as it “shifted some resources to better align with our strategic priorities and new opportunities,” a company spokesperson told Deadline. So far the big cuts have been in the Digital Media department. In 2009, Sesame Workshop laid off more than 60 of its then 355 employees as the company was hit hard by a fall-off in donations and licensing revenue from the bad economy. H. Melvin Ming took over as Sesame Workshop president and CEO when Gary Knell moved on to become CEO of NPR. Ming had been COO. Sesame Street first debuted in 1969. The nonprofit Sesame Workshop produces programming for more than 150 countries worldwide.

How many Muppets have been laid off? I guess all that money the new “Muppet Movie” made went into Kermit and Miss Piggys pockets, they couldn’t donate some of it to save those jobs?
Sesame Workshop doesn’t own the rights to the muppets featured in the Muppet Show and movies. Kermit the Frog is the only muppet from the Muppet Show and movies to appear on Sesame Street, I believe. The Muppets were owned by Jim Henson and sold to Disney.
since when is kermit on sesame? he is a muppet not puppet.
This is very sad. Quality programming is suffering while that crap on Nickelodeon is still being turned out.
This message was brought to you by the letter “B” and the letter “S.” When you fire people, don’t call it “strategy.” You fired PEOPLE. It’s a financial decision that affects families.
SW does this every few years, it’s just worse now that the economy has been in the dumpster. They can’t meet their budget, they re-organize and change their business model. Then, they wait a few years only to find it didn’t work. Then they scrap everything, re-organize and lay off again. Wash, Rinse, repeat. It’s sad, but that’s the topsy turvy world of non-profit TV.
