Dimension Films announced today that it is partnering with Starz Digital Media to offer up the sequel to the fish-ploitation pic Piranha 3DD on-demand and online in places like Amazon, iTunes and Xbox Live the same day as its theatrical release Friday. It marks the first time a 3D movie is taking the increasingly common day-and-date distribution route. Beginning tomorrow, Piranha 3DD will be available for a 48-hour VOD rental; $6.99 in standard and high definition, and $7.99 in 3D. The first film in the franchise made $25M domestic and $83.2 globally when it was released in August 2010. The sequel stars Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush and David Koechner.

and it will be on torrent sites by Saturday for $0.00
you think it will take that long, eh?
No one can deny Dimension Films screwed themselves with this plan. Who the hell releases a 25 million dollar 3D movie in only 75 theaters and on VOD the same day? It makes no sense at all. This movie will lose many millions.
I dunno – I wouldn’t have gone to see this in the theater as it would cost almost $30 for me and my girlfriend….but I have a 3D TV at home, and I just might pony up the $7 to check it out.
Fair point but this movie was actually filmed in 3D and no HDTV that is 3D can top the theatrical experience of watching a 3D movie on the big screen.
Also the last movie made over 80 million dollars worldwide. That is reason enough to give it a wide release.
Pretty sure it got a theatre release in some foreign markets.
It did, Bryan. Off the top of my head, Germany was one. Or maybe I saw it at the EFM. Either way, this movie is what you get after you’ve scraped the bottom out of the barrel to see what’s underneath.
You know what, I think that:
1) It doesn’t matter if it shows up on torrent sites. People are going to WANT to see this movies in theaters. It’s too ridiculous not to. Especially in 3D.
2) Again, while the VOD thing may not be the best idea, I don’t think it’ll impact them too much. I believe the Tim & Eric movie did a similar thing and it worked out for them
Sadly it will only be showing in 75 theaters in North America. So most people who want to see it will have to see it in 2D at home.
It’s homing to backfire on them. Still not enough 3D tvs in the market and a movie like this is made to be on the big screen in 3d. Hence the hilarious 3dd title.
…what will become of its presumptive Best Picture campaign?
There is a reason for this: despite the fun cheesiness of the first film, despite the fun trailer, ‘Piranha 3DD’ is all tease and no delivery. It is, quite simply, one of the worst films I can remember seeing, and not in a good way either.
finally a chance to use my 3d tv for well…3d. Crazy low price point. Happy to host a camp movie night.
Actually, it cost $8M. Already made that back on foreign pre-sales. Zero spent on P & A. Dimension is swinging for a single on this one. Totally lame.
